Cineac stands for Cinéma Actualité. The Cineac cinemas were theaters that showed newsreel all day around. Sometimes documentaries and travelogues were added as a main feature, and in later years cartoons were added to the mix. They all had a newspaper attached to them. There were was another Cineac in Amsterdam, and two cineacs in Rotterdam, as well as one in The Hague.

There was a catholic cinema (Witte Bioscoop) on the same spot which opened in 1911, the Cineac was newly built by architect H. van Vreeswijk who also designed the Calypso (Amsterdam), the Cinéma Américain and Olympia (Den Haag), Centraal (Eindhoven), Cinema Palace (Groningen), the Cineac of Algemeen Handelsblad (Rotterdam), and the Rembrandt (Utrecht).

This 750 seat Cineac opened on the 17th of March 1938 and closed on June 6th 1983.

I found this fascinating. The synagogue was just 5 years old when this was painted. And this is purely speculation on my part, but tourists may have attended to enjoy the evocative and virtuosic singing of the cantor (who can be seen with his back to us on the bima) as well as to see the magnificent building. I know that was the case in some of the later choral synagogues in northern Europe. Adapted from the placard:

Emanuel de Witte (1617–1692), oil on canvas, 1680 | Rijksmuseum

For visitors from all over the world, the Portuguese Synagogue was high on the sightseeing list in Amsterdam. Sephardic Jews were proud to display their marvellous synagogue. This is what the artist Emanuel de Witte evokes in this painting, which is as elegant as his paintings of Protestant church interiors. In the foreground, visitors admire the impressive interior.

FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA

The Future Farmers of America is a national organization of farm boys who are enrolled in high school vocational agriculture courses. There are active organizations in each of the forty-eight states, Porto Rico and the Hawaiian Islands. The purpose of this organization is to aid cooperation and teach farm practices that will make farming a more profitable and enjoyable occupation.

The fifth annual Father and Son Banquet was given February 22. Talks were made on the progress and future possibilities of Vocational Agriculture in high schools. The banquet was the most outstanding event of the Calhoun chapter this year.

Some of the other events in which the F. F. A. members participate are: One member of the Calhoun chapter enters the regional public speaking contest. A representative is sent each year to the National Livestock Exposition at Kansas City, Missouri. This year Ernest Weaver represented the local chapter. Regional basketball tournaments and field days are athletic events in which the boys take part. At these events the F. F. A. members have the privilege of meeting and making friends with boys from other schools. Judging contests including poultry, livestock, horses, dairy cows and many others, in which the Calhoun boys have competed for seven years. Although no outstanding recognition has been obtained, the boys who competed in those contests have received much benefit from the experience.

Interior of the Oude Kerk, Delft, 1650 by Emanuel De Witte. So strange as to seem like one of my collages. The interesting thing is that this is NOT an unusual picture in this genre. The scene is quite normal to everyday life at the time and similar pictures exist with dogs running freely in the church. Behind the boys scribbling on the column is an open grave. The marble slabs were lifted and graves dug beneath. I assume there was NO basement. The beauty of the architecture disguises the message: life's transitory nature -- even crudely put amidst the glory and light.

This vehicle is operated by one of the private companies that provide ambulance services around Paris and is one of the three types of French ambulances operating in the area. These are known as 'whites' because they are mainly white!
