What a bundle of love.
While I give my M50 a break, seems im rolling the trailcam more often, while Ive got the settings figured out for the date and time stamps, setting up the trailcam isn't much of a pain anymore .
I have to credit Opossums the reason, this
is important to me and consider this the crown jewel of keeping my property wildlife friendly the main target all along with reverting (or trying) to rid my property of grass and lawn and switch over to field and meadow space with woods.
While my Black eyed Susan and Queen Anne's lace was rather non existent last summer there was a bit of sunshine in the form of tons of rosettes of New England thistle which ''should'' .. put on a show this summer meaning more plants of native than the bull thistle .
I did notice while last summer the native thistle attracted better variety of butterfly and insect activity choosing the native over the bull which was a nice bonus and the finches enjoyed both plants .
The idea of eradicating bull fully when native outnumber the bull thistle, another focus is Mullein I also pushed to get established with the same slow result thing is I don't have sandy or crappy soil, Calico Aster seems self established while attempts of New England Aster of multiple color types
just seem to not get established, one reason I know that groundhogs devour them and there is no way ever pestering my groundhog population.
I'm at the point believing if it were not for the influx of groundhogs and their burrowing of so many dens and tunnels is why I have other round the clock activity of other wildlife.
Evening Primrose turned out as good as I wanted this past summer even though in my mind the back and front would have been covered with the plants more that they turned out, maybe ill get a wild explosion at some point but should I should introduce barren well drained soil for those wild plants that just thrive in crap soils, like my ever expanding sweet ferns.
Now my last thought in having Opossum around will be the tick situation .
each spring when I check garden chairs I look for ticks which sitting on them seems to leave a scent the ticks attract too and when that is noticed I get a butterfly net and mine sweep
key points of the property to get tick numbers .
Last spring started with the same group of common dog tick where Meadow Voles are known ,while it seemed a bad start
they did fizzle out in numbers .
any captured tic in my view of thinking removed from my property is one less tick to produce any more and with the Opossum around being a mated pair it will be interesting
the tick count will be when ticks become more active .
Groundhogs, Rabbits, Skunks, Raccoon, mice and meadow voles and chipmunks numbers have increased in numbers here, so stands to reason so will tick numbers at some point.
Hopefully not.
