Once in the Mersey River at Devonport, the Spirit of Tasmania captains skillfully manoeuvre the ship into place. On this morning the visibility was hampered by the rain.

Battered, Devonport. Another image from my recent trip to Tassie. I love the way the tree has been shaped by the coastal winds. #australia #tasmania #Devonport via 500px ift.tt/2Fwsxr7

After absolutely terrible weather at Cradle Mountain only an hour and a half earlier, its hard to believe that this was the same day.

On 12/02/72 a Class 121 Bubble car no.P103/55035 arrives into Devonport on a local/ECS from Liskeard.

Unfortunately the set number was a little too blurry to ID the set, but Walnut Rede noted the odd buffers and this enabled the unit to be tracked down and identified as 55035.

Yep, a complete change of venue!

Last weekend, we took our oldest daughter to Auckland to mark her Big Four-Zero birthday (which was in late November).

Rather than trying to find a car park in central Auckland, we drove over the harbour bridge to the old seaside suburb of Devonport, and caught the ferry back to Auckland...

Devonport... An older suburb which until the late 1950s was a terminus for the vehicular ferry between the suburb and the city. But in 1959, the Harbour Bridge opened, the vehicular ferries went out of business, and Devonport became a 'backwater' - a suburb that no-one wanted to live in.

However, by the early 1970s, people had started to re-discover the big olde villas in this little corner of the world (as well as the beautiful beaches!), and Devonport started to gain a new lease of life. Now, it is a thriving, very elegant suburb, with a new fleet of fast and efficient passenger ferries zipping backwards and forwards across the harbour...!

We enjoyed our trip - but sadly: it only took 8 minutes to reach Auckland's bustling CBD and a 3 or 4 minute walk to the headquarters of the British, American, Italian and New Zealand teams racing for the America's Cup... But more about that later!

The scene above is taken from the stern of our ferry, looking back at the edge of the Devonport shopping centre, Mount Victoria (One of several small volcanic cones that dot the Auckland Isthmus), and Stanley Point - home of the Royal New Zealand Navy... but more about that later too!

Thanks for visiting, and thanks for taking the time and trouble to leave a Comment. It's always nice to hear from you...!

From a composition perspective this shot is all wrong but hey.....I liked the contrast of the lighthouse against the sky and its too far to swim back there to do it again!
