Perhaps most famous to Americans from the 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Devil's Tower has been famous to many eons of human cultures and visitors.

Taking a break from running all the way around Devils Tower

We got to Devil's Tower around midnight and played around with some long exposures. I found out that our Canon Powershot 630 can take exposures of up to fifteen seconds. (Okay, how many of you are hearing the same five notes when you look at this picture?)

A late start, delays due to spitting rain, but we make it to the top

The skree field was huge on this side, and trees overhung the path.

There was lots of fire evidence around the path.

Devils Tower sits on a base of trachyte which plumosed through the Belle Fourche and Spearfish redbeds.
