devils tower rises from the boulder field. The boulder field is made of bits of devil's tower that snap off now and again.

Looking up while climbing Buckspeck (5.10c, 1 pitch). Description: Arete, sport. 15 draws + anchor. It is one of the few pure face climbs on the Tower.

Another angle on that slope. In the movie, it leads to a direct view of the command center where the alien meeting is going to take place, but here it leads to nothing.

 

You quickly have to stop making comparisons between the film and the actual landscape. There's nowhere around the Tower that's flat enough for even an imaginary camp, much less a landing strip like the movie had.

 

The cool thing is that even though I wanted to see the Tower because of Close Encounters, I quickly forgot all about that part of my attraction to it and got caught up in how amazing it is all on its own.
