from the devil's footprit

This is a strange tourist attraction; a hollow in the rock at the top of a hill, said to be the footprint of the devil, where people come to make wishes (!) or enjoy the view over the many islands in the bay. Among there is Lesbos where there is a similar footprint. The footprint is attributed to the devil because apparently this was originally a volcano, spewing fire and smoke.

The devil's table near Hinterweidenthal/Palatinate is a well-known red sandstone rock and is the symbol of the Palatinate region. The big pine which grew on him fell victim in 1999 to a thunderstorm and was removed. Legend has it that the devil crossed one night the Palatinate Forest and he got big hunger. After he found no suitable resting place, he took without further ado two big sandstone rocks and put them on each other. When he was full, he simply left the rock table and disappeared. The people who saw the gigantic table the next day got great fear, because they supposed that here the devil was at work. Quite a courageous man boasted to want to take a meal with the devil together the next night. At midnight people heard a nightmarish shout and he was never again seen.

Germany, Jun 22, 2012.

People throw in coins and red ribbons (which I presume are sold at the nearby souvenir shop). The footprint is protected by an iron cage so you can't put your own foot in it to compare sizes. I didn't know what kind of wish I could ask the devil to grant, so spent most of my time there trying to get a good photo of the view.

Eine spontane Wanderung zum Teufelstisch. Wir waren früh dran daher wenige Besucher und noch etwas Morgensonne.
