We hiked up to the Devil's Postpile to admire these most unusual geologic formations. The slope below the cliff of basalt "postpiles" is littered with the slabs that have fallen from the mountain. Some are so perfectly symmetrical and long that they look like they were designed by an architect !

Similar formations exist in Giant's Causeway in Ireland and probably elsewhere in the world, but these are the most well known.

The formation is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the world's finest examples of columnar basalt. Its columns tower 60 feet high and display an unusual symmetry.

I can't find the exact spot on the map because we were driven up the Minaret Summit Road in a bus then dropped off at the Devil's Postpile Ranger Station, then hiked for a while on the Pacific Crest Trail to reach the monument. We encountered several really fit looking young men with large backpacks who were hiking the PCT - they asked us for directions :)

We can now honestly say that we have hiked the PCT - at least a mile or so of it :)

Devil's Cataract, part of the Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls.

According to the Native American tribes of the Kiowa and Lakota Sioux, some girls went out to play and were spotted by several giant bears, who began to chase them. In an effort to escape the bears, the girls climbed atop a rock, fell to their knees, and prayed to the Great Spirit to save them. Hearing their prayers, the Great Spirit made the rock rise from the ground towards the heavens so that the bears could not reach the girls. The bears, in an effort to climb the rock, left deep claw marks in the sides, which had become too steep to climb. (Those are the marks which appear today on the sides of Devils Tower.) When the girls reached the sky, they were turned into the star constellation the Pleiades.

Another from last month.

Devil’s matchstick

(Cladonia floerkeana)

Also known as 'British soldier'.

A quirky lichen with red-capped branches (known as 'podetia'), this lichen usually grows between one and three centimetres in height.

Like all lichens, the Devil's matchstick is actually two organisms working together: a fungus and an algae in a symbiotic relationship.

Where to see it

Cladonia floerkeana has a fondness for dead wood so rotting logs and fence posts are a good place to start. It also grows on well drained soil with a high organic matter content such as that found on heath and moorland.

Distribution

This lichen is scattered throughout the UK, although more commonly found in the north and the west.

Did you know?

Lichens are very sensitive to air pollution: the more lichens you find in a place the cleaner the air!

This geological growth stands out abruptly in the middle of Mammoth Hot Spring's Palette Springs. Fascinating.....

Have a wonderful weekend, hopefully with some sun and warmth.

Thanks for taking a look!

Vale of Rheidol Railway engine The Prince of Wales and Devils Bridge end of line station. The name comes from the old bridge built some say by the Devil himself after an encounter with a local elderly woman in the 11th century. The Devil was outwitted by the woman and fled in shame.

Considered to be the most pristine of all rivers in Texas, Devils is truly a sight to be seen...

The crystal clear, caribbean green waters contrast starkly against a backdrop of West Texas Canyon Land. It is a place where drought resilient desert species co-mingle with water hungry riparian woodlands.

As the river flows primarily across vast expanses of private land, access is extremely limited. The Devils River State Natural Area is really one of the only points of public access and it is well off the beaten path... but well worth the effort to explore!

Nice rock formations. Winter hike just seven minutes from my home in Loveland Colorado. Nice trail on way to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Bit of a duffer day yesterday for me with the rain and my timings/location so in desperation to take some pics and stay out I did the rounds and ended up at Devils Point, the sunset at this location wasn't much to speak of so just as it disappeared over the horizon I hit the shutter button for a 5 minute exposure! :)

Devil's Island was notorious for being used for the internal exile of French political prisoners, with the most famous being Captain Alfred Dreyfus

...i've shot this National Icon several times over the years and always delight in being there. Post processing in Topaz Simplify..

We retrace most of our way through the hospital halls back to ground level, we don’t look around any further though. Like I said, rangers‘ll probably be scouting around after we took down that drone, so my only goal is getting us out of the area as soon as possible. God dammit, this whole time we were being way too reckless and I didn’t even consider if there was anyone in here with us. I'm usually not this irresponsible when we’re out here...

We find an exit on the south wing. I go up beside one of the shattered out glass doors and we both peak out.

Phin - “I’m not liking the looks of how open it is. What d’you think we should do?”

Cristy - “I mean, do you really think there’s that much of a risk?”

Phin - “After having that encounter with the drone we can’t be too sure."

I push the door framing open and lead towards a rusty car smashed front-first into a support. I kneel behind it and look around. With the better angle, I now see the one building next to us is a parkade.

Phin - “We can go along that car garage. That way we’ll have something to duck into if anything happens.”

Cristy - “I really think you’re over thinking all this.”

Phin - “ ‘Better to over think than under think.”

I stand back up and pat Cristy on the back.

Phin - “Keep it moving.”

I move around the car and walk with a hunch to try and keep low. We follow along the side of the parkade through tall grass and bushes; passing by the entry way and fenced off window openings.

Devil's Tower National Monument

You should be able to see 2 climbers (one in red and the other in blue). You can also see the ropes of a 3rd climber who is not pictured.

From the camp ground at Devils Tower.

"Devils Island Lighthouse" by Patti Deters. Devils Island Lighthouse is one of six lighthouses in the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin, about 20 miles from Bayfield and is the farthest north of the 22 island archipelago. It was first lit in 1891 and is the only lighthouse in the Apostles group that still has its original Fresnel lens. The original architecture was a self-supporting 82-foot steel cylinder, but the high winds of its exposed location caused the tower to shake so badly that lightkeepers complained that the motion sometimes extinguished the lamp. In 1914, the Lighthouse Service reinforced the structure with external braces, giving the tall white tower the appearance we see today. The sea caves and cliffs on the island and under the lighthouse are some of the most alluring within the national lakeshore. Although Devils Island is relatively remote, its lighthouse is a popular destination for experienced boaters and sea kayakers who like to explore the cliffs, water-carved arches, vaulted chambers, and honeycombed passageways of the sea caves. Tour boats do not usually stop at Devils Island, but lake cruises offer excellent views of this historic navigational landmark as is seen in this vertical photograph taken with wispy clouds in the deep blue sky. Devil's Throat as seen from the argentinian side of the Iguaçu Falls

A long walk down the hill to this serene pond in Mendon Ponds Park.

To me this devil's fingers (Clathrus archeri) fungus looks like a circle of dancing devils, or something out of John Carpenter's 1982 film The Thing...

Photographed at Devils Garden in Arches National Park in Utah, USA. This park has a large number of weathered rock formations and many stone arches. In a spectacular and beautiful desert setting.

Devils Tower rises 1267 feet above the Belle Fourche River.

Also known as Bears Lodge, it is a sacred site for many American Indians.

President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Devils Tower the first national monument in 1906.
