Devils Tower rises above the surrounding grassland and Ponderosa pine forests like a rocky sentinel. Northern Plains tribes have worshipped near this remarkable geologic formation for thousands of years. Fur trappers, explorers, and settlers alike were awed by the tower's majesty. In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt established Devils Tower as our nation's first national monument. Many have gazed at the Tower and wondered, "How did this amazing formation form?"

You may remember Devils Tower from "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind" . . . if you made it through that movie. When we got there the sun was beaming overhead and after some major photoshop editing I was able to save at least one photo.

For years dad has been a "Friend of Devils Lake". He has helped work at events, patrol the trails and generally acted as a goodwill ambassador. He still loves the lake, even when it is packed. He just sits on the beach and watched the crowds go by.
