geology! this tower is a 'volcanic neck'; lava in an ancient volcano pushed up the sedimentary rocks around it, and then the sediments eroded away to leave an 800-ft columnar basalt tower. it's on the wyoming license plate. as you can see, not beyond the influence of the bike rally.

Devils Gate, Wyoming
Devils Lake lies in the middle of Lincoln City, Oregon. It covers just over a square mile (680 acres), and has a mean depth of 8.4 feet and a maximum depth of 21.1 feet.
The D River, which connects Devils Lake to the Pacific Ocean, is only 440 feet (130 metres) long, and is billed as the "world's shortest river".

A popular mountain biking trail, the Devil's Gulch of Mission Creek is remote from Cashmere on Wenatchee National Forest Land...there was still snow on the trail, so we had it to ourselves with a few wildflowers to cheer us on, but not much color yet...the sandstone formations in a Ponderosa Pine habitat competing with Douglas Firs, this area has been the victim of windstorms, fires, and global warming trends in local forests, but still makes a nice early spring getaway.
Devil’s Dyke, Wheathampstead is a massive ditch approximately 470m long and12m deep. It was constructed during the Iron Age and formed the main defences of the Catavelaunii tribe. It was probably where the British chieftain Cassivellaunus was defeated by Julius Caesar in 54 B.C.
The Devils Marbles is a large field of boulders in the central Australian desert of the Northern Territory. There is an overnight camping area and it is wonderful to experience sunset and sunrise amongst the huge stones. The site is known as Karlu Karlu to the land's Aboriginal traditional owners.
