Devils Kitchen is located east of Greybull Wyoming on the edge of the Shell Creek Valley. The varicolored, Early Cretaceous Cloverly Formation is exposed in the Kitchen inside the eroded center of a upfold or anticline called the Shell Creek Dome. Devils Kitchen is known for its badlands topography where soft, layered sedimentary rocks like sandstone, siltstone, shale and claystone get eroded into spires, towers and fanciful shapes. In this semiarid environment there is sparse vegetation and little soil development on these rock outcrops. Erosion caused by flash flooding from occasional thunderstorms carves this landscape with an assist from the other usual physical and chemical agents that weather and weaken the rock. The floor of "the Kitchen" is characterized by mounds of weathered claystone; silstone and shale.
This is Yohko from the anime Devil Hunter Yohko. :) She was a gift to a friend for a Secret Santa event. She was kinda late though... XD;
One of the huge 'Devil's Arrows', Boroughbridge. There may have been five of these gritstone menhirs at the site originally. Now only three survive. They appear to have been placed to align with the southernmost summer moonrise.

A french devil tissue view (diablerie) from the 1870s.
It is believed that these pictures might have been a satire on Napoleon. An overt review of his government had been awkward and so many puns and satirical jokes were hidden within these views. Of course they are difficult to read.
This little chap is AWESOME };0)>
Caged in an old church (until next week) Lucifer in all his gory glory!
the main body is only 1 metre on length and the wings are huge.

Took a road trip up north of us for a little day hiking. It was one of our few sunny days of late and there was a lot of color around the lake. We even spotted a flock of Cedar Waxwings picking berries off the trees! It certainly got crowded as the day wore on. Could be the last warm day we have for a while. Snow in the forecast!!!!!

An active vent at the edge of the lake is a source of elemental sulfur, and supports a mining operation. Escaping volcanic gasses are channeled through a network of ceramic pipes, resulting in condensation of molten sulfur. The sulfur, which is deep red in color when molten, pours slowly from the ends of these pipes and pools on the ground, turning bright yellow as it cools. The miners break the cooled material into large pieces and carry it away in baskets.
The miners often use insufficient protection while working around the volcano and complain of numerous respiratory afflictions. There are 200 miners which extract 14 tons per day or only 20 percent of the daily continously deposit.
Devils Tower National Monument

According to the Native American tribes of the Kiowa and Lakota, a group of girls went out to play and were spotted by several giant bears, who began to chase them. In an effort to escape the bears, the girls climbed atop a rock, fell to their knees, and prayed to the Great Spirit to save them. Hearing their prayers, the Great Spirit made the rock rise from the ground towards the heavens so that the bears could not reach the girls. The bears, in an effort to climb the rock, left deep claw marks in the sides, which had become too steep to climb. Those are the marks which appear today on the sides of Devils Tower. When the girls reached the sky, they were turned into the stars of the Pleiades.
We hiked up to the Devil's Postpile to admire these most unusual geologic formations. The slope below the cliff of basalt "postpiles" is littered with the slabs that have fallen from the mountain. Some are so perfectly symmetrical and long that they look like they were designed by an architect !
Similar formations exist in Giant's Causeway in Ireland and probably elsewhere in the world, but these are the most well known.
The formation is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the world's finest examples of columnar basalt. Its columns tower 60 feet high and display an unusual symmetry.
I can't find the exact spot on the map because we were driven up the Minaret Summit Road in a bus then dropped off at the Devil's Postpile Ranger Station, then hiked for a while on the Pacific Crest Trail to reach the monument. We encountered several really fit looking young men with large backpacks who were hiking the PCT - they asked us for directions :)
We can now honestly say that we have hiked the PCT - at least a mile or so of it :)
Morning cooperation Industry: Tasmanian Devil
Category : Vastland Cross
The Tasmanian Devil is suitable for routes of a special kind. Its powerful 12 cell ion injection engine accelerates this massive vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.3 seconds. In addition, this speeder has a plasma gun and a strong armor. In the sidecar are various spare parts to make repairs on the field to be done. Additional suspensions ensure that enough accessories can be carried along. All these qualities make the Tasmanian Devil the first choice In this race.
Devil’s matchstick
(Cladonia floerkeana)
Also known as 'British soldier'.
A quirky lichen with red-capped branches (known as 'podetia'), this lichen usually grows between one and three centimetres in height.
Like all lichens, the Devil's matchstick is actually two organisms working together: a fungus and an algae in a symbiotic relationship.
Where to see it
Cladonia floerkeana has a fondness for dead wood so rotting logs and fence posts are a good place to start. It also grows on well drained soil with a high organic matter content such as that found on heath and moorland.
Distribution
This lichen is scattered throughout the UK, although more commonly found in the north and the west.
Did you know?
Lichens are very sensitive to air pollution: the more lichens you find in a place the cleaner the air!

This geological growth stands out abruptly in the middle of Mammoth Hot Spring's Palette Springs. Fascinating.....
Have a wonderful weekend, hopefully with some sun and warmth.
Thanks for taking a look!
Considered to be the most pristine of all rivers in Texas, Devils is truly a sight to be seen...
The crystal clear, caribbean green waters contrast starkly against a backdrop of West Texas Canyon Land. It is a place where drought resilient desert species co-mingle with water hungry riparian woodlands.
As the river flows primarily across vast expanses of private land, access is extremely limited. The Devils River State Natural Area is really one of the only points of public access and it is well off the beaten path... but well worth the effort to explore!
