Let's make sure to find the best use for the isthmus before approving an urban waterfront rezone proposal that is currently on the table before the Olympia City Council.
More housing in downtown Olympia? That sounds great!
The question becomes, is the isthmus the right place for high rise housing (condominiums)? Triway Enterprises has submitted a proposal to develop high rise condos on the isthmus in the area that is to the left in this photograph. New buildings in this area would block views of the Olympic Mountains and the Puget Sound's Budd Inlet (views already partially blocked by the building seen above, the Capitol Center, which is the former home to the State Dep. of Corrections.)
Instead of putting up Condos on the isthmus, or any buildings over 20 feet tall for that matter, one alternative (among many) would be for the landowner to find a willing party to trade for land that is in a different, more suitable and appropriate, location for the development of condos.
Let's make sure to find the best use for the isthmus area. The idea of a natural park area, to include some semi-wilderness, is appealing. The novelty of a natural area feature, a park would be truly remarkable and distinct. It would attract people to downtown.
The juxtaposition of a dedicated natural area with the dense urban downtown core would provide an exceptional environment downtown. It would serve to further set Olympia apart as a community that takes its relationship with the planet seriously. It would be part and parcel with the city's mission for sustainability. A park would provide a hyper-local natural area recreation opportunity, and so ease the burden on peoples' need to escape to further flung natural areas. A park on the isthmus would provide for walk-ability and encourage citizens to walk in part to enjoy the nature that abounds.
[June 25, '08: If downtown Olympia truly seeks to increase housing density in search of sustainability, it must also make jobs available to those who will live downtown. Also, if downtown is to become a more dense environment, then it is absolutely essential that green spaces be preserved so that all those people will have a place to recreate, to stretch out, to feel the sun and wind on their faces. /June 25, '08]
