The Sri Dwadasha (12) Jyotirlinga Devasthana is a unique, and one of the most magnificent and gigantic temples in Karnataka.

In this temple the Twelve Representative Jyotirlingas of the original Pauranik Twelve Jyotirlingas, which are in different parts of our country are under one roof, each with an individual Garbhagriha and Vimanagopuram.

Inside the main temple, these 12 Jyotirlingas are seen along with Sri Vidyaganapathi, Sri Subrahmanya, Sri Kalabhairava, Sri Chandikeshwara, Ekadasha (11) Rudradevatas, Panchaloha Nataraja weighing around 1000 Kgs and the Divine Mother Shakti in the form of Sri Yantra.

Jyotirlingas, the Omkareshwara Jyotirlinga measuring around 6 Feet in height, occupies the place of pride with Spatika Shree Yantra, at the centre of the temple, encircled by the other Eleven Jyotirlingas.

Although Malleshwaram is brimming with temples, this one known as the Dakshina Mukha Nandi Theertha is the one shrouded with mysteries and controversies.

According to residents living nearby, the temple was completely buried and the land above it was a flat stretch. In 1997, a local politician began his house construction on this land. And so when they started digging up the land, they found a 'Nandi' or a Bull's Head. Soon ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) was called upon. After complete excavation, this temple was found in perfect condition, preserved by thick layers of soil.

After Radio carbon tests, it has been ascertained that the temple is 7000 years old.

This underground temple was enclosed within a stone cut courtyard supported by ancient stone pillars. At the far end of the courtyard, a Nandi was carved out of a black stone with eyes painted in gold. When the mouth of the bull was cleaned, it started releasing uninterrupted supply of water. The source of the water could not be traced but when the land under the bull was dug, a Linga of Lord Shiva was found on which the water from bull's mouth fell continuously. Further, there were steps that led to a small pool in the center of the courtyard where the water flowed and collected. The pool's center had a 15 feet deep whirlpool.

Everything remains as-is till today, except that the temple's beauty has been restored to its old glory. The walls have been repainted and some light fittings. But till date the source of the water, the sculptor or how the whirlpool came into being remains a mystery.

Devotees believe that the holy water in the Kalyani (Pond) is capable of curing diseases and carry it back with them.

This was lost in one of the neighborhoods my tuk-tuk driver squired me through. The light was fading but I grabbed a couple of shots of the tower and all its gods and figures.

On 25th December 2009 I visited Aryankavu where the celestial marriage of Sourashtra bride Sri Pushkala Devi with Sabarimalai Sastha Aiyappan was conducted by Travancore Devaswom Board and Aryankavu Devasthana Sourashtra Mahajana Sangam, Madurai.

One Temple employee requested me to take a photo graph of the children, for they were curious to see their photos in the Camera.

I just obliged their request and showed the photo. They were very happy.

It is believed that Parashurama who was living in Sahyadri, killed the kshathriyas who were cruel and donated the lands to Kashyapa. He prayed to Lord Shiva for a place to live. Lord Shiva assured Parashurama that if he performed a penance at Kadali Kshethra, Lord Shiva would reincarnate as Manjunatha for the betterment of the world.

As per Shiva's orders Parashurama threw his axe into the sea and created a place for his penance. Yielding to Parashurama's prayers Lord Shiva appeared to him as Manjunatha along with Goddess Parvathi and stayed at Kadri for the betterment of the world.
