It has been a long and seemingly unsettled summer for me. I really need to take the time to sit quietly, detoxify my mind, and remember to be thankful for all the small blessings:

The dull distant clatter of an eleven-year-old beachcomber's windchime -

The first whiff of the sea breeze in the heat of the day,

Mixing with the burbling of a lunchtime stove-top espresso.

Footsteps creeping softly across the sandy beach house floor.

We saw this Koala on Raymond Island on our last road trip. It has just woken from its slumber hence that sleepy look.

The Koala is not a bear but a marsupial.

Called ‘joeys’, baby koalas develop in their mother’s pouch for about six months. After this time, they’ll ride on their mum’s back for another six months, only using the pouch to feed and sleep.

Living in trees and being wedged between rough branches requires a lot of support! Luckily, the koala has strong cartilage at the end of their curved spine, allowing them to make eucalyptus trees a comfortable home!

Koalas survive on a diet of eucalyptus leaves and can eat up to a kilogram a day! Pretty impressive, considering eucalyptus is poisonous to most animals.Their special fibre digesting organ, called a caecum, helps to detoxify the chemicals in the leaves.

Despite the rumours, koalas don’t ‘get high’ or ‘drugged out’ on eucalyptus leaves. It’s because the leaves are so low in nutrients that koalas need more sleep than most animals which basically helps them conserve energy. They can sleep for 18hrs a day.

Sadly, koala numbers are on the decline. Their numbers have been falling further and further every year due to deforestation, disease and bush fires.

Many thanks for your visit, comments, invites and faves...it is always appreciated.

Happy Tuesday

The bamboo or gentle lemurs are the lemurs in genus Hapalemur. These medium-sized primates live exclusively on Madagascar. The greater bamboo lemur, formerly known as Hapalemur simus, was considered part of this genus, but is now classified as belonging to the genus Prolemur.

Bamboo lemurs prefer damp forests where bamboo grows. Although they can be active any time of the day, they are often active just after dawn. Though primarily arboreal, they sometimes come down to the ground.

The lesser gentle lemurs live together in groups of three to five animals, which probably represent families composed of a male, one or two females, and their offspring. They communicate with a variety of sounds.

They are called bamboo lemurs because they almost exclusively eat bamboo. How bamboo lemurs can detoxify the high amounts of cyanide (from bamboo shoots) in their diets is unknown. Their life expectancy is up to 12 years.

Romalea microptera. Also known as the Florida Lubber, Diablo, or the Black Diablo... the Devil's Horse, and the Graveyard Grasshopper. Poisonous to most of its potential predators except for the Loggerhead Shrike, a bird that decapitates and then impales the grasshopper on a thorn to dry in the sun and detoxify the carcass before consuming! They are extremely resistant to pesticides except when very young and are considered pests to farmers and gardeners. They are not harmful to humans. Can also produce a hissing noise. Seen here in Southwest Florida. This guy did not flee... stood his ground while being photographed and actually turned and stayed facing the camera slightly regardless of my angle! He did not hiss at me though and we parted in peace...

Chrysoprase is the stone of happiness, hope, and delight.

It is a very soothing heart chakra stone that works on alleviating stress inducing emotions, it supplements your heart and soul with a peaceful sense of serenity.

Plus it detoxifies your entire system so you can regain a revitalizing sensation of optimism and lightness.

A koala's diet is composed mainly of eucalyptus leaves from eucalyptus trees that grow in Australia. Koalas eat around 1 to 2 pounds of these leaves each day. But they are known to consume even more when they are lactating. Eucalyptus leaves are toxic to many animals, but koalas can detoxify it through their unique digestive system (Wikipedia)

Poisonous apple, not from the Queen in Snow White, but an everyday apple that has potentially poisonous seeds, that can produce cyanide!

Apple seeds, as well as many other fruit seeds or pits, have a strong outer layer that is resistant to digestive juices. But if you chew the seeds, amygdalin could be released in the body and produce cyanide. Small amounts can be detoxified by enzymes in your body, but large amounts can be dangerous.

Some things I didn't know about the dandelion (Taraxacum officinale): rich in minerals & vitamins A, B, C & D and naturally high in sodium & potassium. The roots were once used medicinally, and for making dandelion tea, which is a superior natural diuretic and detoxifies and induces the flow of bile from the liver, reduces uric acid from the system.

The tetrio sphinx, Pseudosphinx tetrio (Linnaeus), is a common moth in the American tropics and subtropics. Although the adults exhibit mostly drab grey coloration, larvae are conspicuous, large caterpillars that often occur in gardens feeding on frangipani and other members of the dogbane family (Apocynaceae).

This moth is widespread throughout the American tropics and subtropics in lowland habitats.

Larvae are velvety black with yellow rings and a reddish-orange head. They can attain lengths of up to 6 inches. The black 'horn' located on abdominal segment 8 is approximately one inch long and is located on an elevated orange 'button'.

Females lay approximately 50 to 100 eggs in clusters on leaves of the host tree. The larval color pattern is a typical aposematic warning sign that they are potentially toxic to predators. Host plants in the family Apocynaceae produce white, toxic latex that Pseudosphinx tetrio is able to detoxify and possibly sequester for defense purposes

Tetrio sphinx caterpillars often appear in gardens or landscaping and can defoliate frangipani trees in a few days or couple of weeks

Mycena purpureofusca, commonly known as the purple edge bonnet, is a species of agaric fungus in the family Mycenaceae. First described by Charles Horton Peck in 1885, the species is found in Europe and North America, where it grows on the decaying wood and debris of conifers, including cones. Fruit bodies have conical to bell-shaped purple caps up to 2.5 cm (1 in) set atop slender stipes up to 10 cm (4 in) long. The mushroom is named for the characteristic dark greyish-purple color of its gill edges. In the field, M. purpureofusca mushrooms can usually be distinguished from similar species by characteristics such as the dark purple gill edges, the deep purple cap center, and its cartilagineous consistency. The fungus contains a laccase enzyme that has been investigated scientifically for its potential to detoxify recalcitrant industrial dyes used in textile dyeing and printing processes.

The Salmon-crested cockatoo, also known as the Moluccan cockatoo, is a cockatoo endemic to the Seram archipelago in eastern Indonesia. At a height of up to 46–52 cm and weight of up to 850 g, it is among the largest of the white cockatoos. These birds are very long-lived, and can live upwards of 70 years in captivity, although they only live to about 20–40 years in the wild. They have been known to engage in geophagy, the process of eating clay to detoxify their food.

While koalas are popular worldwide and are the face of many Aussie tourist souvenirs, there are some really basic facts that people might not know about this iconic and lovable mammal – like right now they are incredibly vulnerable to local extinction in NSW.

Here are 10 interesting facts about koalas put together by WWF Australia:

1. Koalas aren’t bears – they’re marsupials!

You might hear the term ‘koala bear’ being tossed around when it comes to these fluffy animals. While they might look bear-like with their round ears and big black nose, they actually share more characteristics with other marsupials like the wombat.

2. Baby koalas are too cute (this is indeed, a fact).

Called ‘joeys’, baby koalas develop in their mother’s pouch for about six months. After this time, they’ll ride on their mum’s back for another six months, only using the pouch to feed and sleep.

3. Koalas can be found in south-eastern and eastern Australia

While koalas are a national symbol of Australia’s unique wildlife, they can only be found in the wild on the southeast and eastern sides of Australia, along the coastlines of Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria. They live high up in eucalyptus trees of native bushlands and forests, usually perched between the forks of the tree’s branches.

4. They have a very supportive butt…

Living in trees and being wedged between rough branches requires a lot of support! Luckily, the koala has strong cartilage at the end of their curved spine, allowing them to make eucalyptus trees a comfortable home!

5. They’re fussy eaters!

Koalas survive on a diet of eucalyptus leaves and can eat up to a kilogram a day! Pretty impressive, considering eucalyptus is poisonous to most animals. Their special fibre digesting organ, called a caecum, helps to detoxify the chemicals in the leaves.

However, they can be quite picky eaters, eating less than 50 of over 700 eucalypt species. Even then, they’ll often choose leaves at the top of the tallest trees that contain more liquid and nutrients – only the best for Australia’s koalas!

6. ‘Koala’ is thought to mean ‘no drink’ in the Australian Aboriginal language

It was thought that koalas didn’t need to drink because of the moisture they get from munching on juicy eucalyptus leaves all day. However, they do drink from various water sources when needed, especially during heatwaves and in times of drought.

7. Koalas can sleep up to 18 hours a day

Despite the rumours, koalas don’t ‘get high’ or ‘drugged out’ on eucalyptus leaves. It’s because the leaves are so low in nutrients that koalas need more sleep than most animals which basically helps them conserve energy.

8. Koala Chlamydia is a serious disease

But it’s not the same strain of Chlamydia that affects humans. Many koala populations are vulnerable to Chlamydia and it usually manifests when they’re in stressful situations. The disease can cause blindness and reproductive tract infections.

9. Koalas are losing their homes to excessive tree-clearing

Many koala populations are faced with nowhere to go when their forest habitat is destroyed by deforestation. Just in the last two years, tree-clearing has tripled in New South Wales, leaving important koala habitats incredibly fragmented or completely lost. With their trees gone, koalas are spending more time on the ground in search of food and shelter. Sadly, this is when they’re most vulnerable to being hit by vehicles, attacked by dogs and falling ill to stress-induced diseases like chlamydia.

10. Sadly, koala numbers are on the decline

Sadly, koala numbers are on the decline. Their numbers have been falling further and further every year due to deforestation and disease. Then, Australia was ravaged by the most devastating, unprecedented bushfire season the country has ever seen. Tragically, nearly 3 billion animals, many found nowhere else in the world, perished. Many struggling Australian species, like our koalas, have now been pushed even further towards the brink of extinction. The good news is that there is hope to turn this around.

The health benefits of dandelion include relief from liver disorders, diabetes, urinary disorders, acne, jaundice, cancer and anemia. It also helps in maintaining bone health, skin care and is a benefit to weight loss programs. These and other health benefits are currently being studied for complete validation by a number of international institutions.

Despite the health benefits of dandelions, they are traditionally more popular as ornamental flowering plants than as medicine, because the flowers of dandelions look brilliant and are frequently seen in gardens and parks. There are many varieties of dandelion, but the common dandelion is scientifically known as Taraxacum Officinale. In terms of history, the plant is believed to have evolved about 30 million years ago in Eurasia.

Dandelion, which literally translates into “lion’s tooth” in French, is rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, iron and calcium and detoxifiers which explains its common inclusion in medicines. Below, we will discuss the different things that benefit can do for us, besides decorating our gardens.

Health Benefits Of Dandelion

The health benefits of dandelions include the following:

Bone Health: Dandelions are rich in calcium, which is essential for the growth and strength of bones, and they are rich in antioxidants like vitamin-C and Luteolin, which protect bones from age-related damage. This inevitable damage is often due to free radicals, and is frequently seen as bone frailty, weakness, and decreased density.

Liver Disorders: Dandelions can help the liver in many ways. While the antioxidants like vitamin-C and Luteolin keep the liver functioning in optimal gear and protect it from aging, other compounds in dandelions help treat hemorrhaging in the liver. Furthermore, dandelions aid in maintaining the proper flow of bile, while also stimulating the liver and promoting digestion. Proper digestion can reduce the chances of constipation, which in turn reduces the risk of more serious gastrointestinal issues.

Diabetes: Dandelion juice can help diabetic patients by stimulating the production of insulin from the pancreas, thereby keeping the blood sugar level low. Since dandelions are diuretic in nature, they increase urination in diabetic patients, which helps remove the excess sugar from the body. Diabetics are also prone to renal problems, so the diuretic properties of dandelion can help removing the sugar deposition in the kidneys through increased urination. Furthermore, dandelion juice is slightly bitter to taste, which effectively lowers the sugar level in the blood, as all bitter substances do. Consistently lower blood sugar and a more regulated system of insulin release prevents dangerous spikes and plunges for diabetic patients, so dandelion extracts can be a perfect solution!

Urinary Disorders: Dandelions are highly diuretic in nature, so they help eliminate deposits of toxic substances in the kidneys and the urinary tract. The disinfectant properties of dandelions also inhibit microbial growth in the urinary system. In fact, the diuretic properties of dandelions are so strong that in France, the flower is also called “pissenlit” which means “urinate in bed”.

Skin Care: Dandelion sap, also known as dandelion milk, is useful in treating skin diseases which are caused by microbial and fungal infections. This treatment stems from the fact that the sap is highly alkaline and has germicidal, insecticidal and fungicidal properties. You should be careful while using this sap, and avoid any contact with the eyes. This sap can be used on itches, ringworm, eczema, and other skin conditions without the risk of side effects or hormonal disturbances commonly caused by pharmaceutical skin treatments.

Acne: Dandelion juice is a good detoxifier, diuretic, stimulant and antioxidant. These four properties make it a great treatment for acne. Before we know how it treats acne, we must know what causes it. Acne typically arises during the teenage years, when the body undergoes many physiological and hormonal changes. The flood of new hormones that bring about the changes in the body must be regulated, but if they don’t remain at a healthy ratio, they tend to deposit somewhat toxic substances into the body. These toxins tend to come out along with sweat through the sweat glands or sebaceous glands on the skin.

uring these hormonal changes, these glands secrete more oils which, when mixed with dead skin, block the pores and the secretion of toxins is obstructed. Therefore, the toxic substances cannot escape and eventually result in acne. This situation is exacerbated by the microbial infections on the effected places. Dandelion juice, being a stimulant, diuretic and detoxifier in nature, can help regulate proper secretion of hormones, increase sweating and widen the pores. All of these factors help to facilitate the removal of toxins through sweat and urine. Furthermore, dandelion sap, if externally applied to areas with acne, can inhibit microbial infection and reduce the frustrating signs of acne. Also, it can speed up healing due to its vitamin-C content, so the scars and ugly red inflammation that traditionally follows acne treatment will be less noticeable.

Weight Loss: Our urine consists of up to 4% fat, so the more we urinate, the more water and fats are lost from the body. Dandelions, being diuretic in nature, promotes urination and thereby helps lose the dreaded “water weight” without causing any side effects. Furthermore, dandelions are low in calories, like most leafy greens, but for the small expense of calories (~1oo cal./4 cups), you get a huge amount of beneficial side effects. This is also why dandelions are sometimes used as sweeteners, because they are not packed with unhealthy sugars.

Cancer: Dandelions are high in antioxidants, such as vitamin-C and Luteolin, which reduce the free radicals (major cancer-causing agents) in the body, thereby reducing the risk of cancer. It also detoxifies the body, which further helps protect from the development of tumors and various cancers. Luteolin actually poisons essential components of cancer cells when it binds to them, rendering them ineffective and unable to reproduce. This characteristic has been demonstrated most notably with prostate cancer, although there are other studies being done.

Jaundice: Jaundice is primarily a disorder of the liver in which the organ starts overproducing bile, which ultimately enters the bloodstream and wreaks havoc on the body’s metabolism. The excess bile is also reflected through color of the skin, and eyes, which typically develop a yellow tint. The treatment of jaundice includes three main steps. First, you need to curb the production of bile. Second, you must remove the excess bile from the body, and third, you have to fight the underlying viral infection.

Dandelions are very helpful in all of these steps. It promotes liver health and regulates bile production. Being diuretic in nature, it promotes urination, where the excess bile can be eliminated. Finally, as an antioxidant and disinfectant due to the presence of vitamin-C and Luteolin, it fights viral infections as well. It is most beneficial when taken with sugarcane juice, since it replaces the sugar in the body that is significantly lowered due to the impact of excess bile. A lack of sugar can cause extreme fatigue and weakness, so dandelions help boost your energy levels after infection!

Gall Bladder Disorders: Dandelions are very beneficial for the gall bladder and liver, because they improve their general functioning, protects them from ill effects of oxidants and infections, and regulates the various secretions from both organs.

Constipation: Certain components of dandelion, namely the high levels of dietary fiber, make it a beneficial aid for digestion and proper intestinal health. Dietary fiber stimulates healthy bowel movements by adding bulk to stool, and also reduces chances of constipation as well as diarrhea. It regulates bowel movements, which can prevent more serious gastrointestinal issues. It is commonly prescribed for children who are experiencing constipation, as it is relatively soothing on the stomach. It has also been used to stimulate the appetite, particularly following trauma or surgery.

Anemia: Dandelions have relatively good levels of iron, vitamins, and protein content. While iron is the integral part of hemoglobin in the blood, vitamins like vitamin-B and protein are essential for the formation of red blood cells and certain other components of the blood. This way dandelion can help anemic people keep their condition in check.

High Blood Pressure: Urination is an effective way of lowering blood pressure. In fact, most of the modern medicines for lowering blood pressure are based on this phenomenon. Dandelion juice, being diuretic in nature, increases urination, both in quantity and frequency. Therefore, it helps lower high blood pressure. The fiber in dandelion is also helpful in reducing cholesterol and thereby assists in lowering blood pressure, since cholesterol is one of the factors that increases blood pressure. Finally, there is the high potassium content of dandelions, which is very effective in lowering blood pressure by replacing sodium.

Other Benefits: Dandelions can also be used as a vegetable and is a good source of fiber. It promotes digestion, and in the past, it was used to treat scurvy, because of its high levels of vitamin-C. It also has healing effects on dyspepsia, infections in the stomach, intestines and urinary system.

A Few Words of Warning: Dandelions can be helpful to diabetics by lowering blood sugar, but for patients already taking blood-sugar modulators, this can result in hypoglycemia, an equally dangerous condition. Consult your doctor before adding dandelion supplements on top of your normal treatment. Also, the milk sap of dandelions has been known to cause itchiness, irritation, or allergic reactions on the skin, and should be kept away from the eyes. Finally, there is a rare type of fiber in dandelions called inulin, and some people have a predisposed sensitivity or allergy to it which can be quite severe. When first adding dandelion greens to your diet in any way, start small and closely monitor your body’s response.

Other than that, pick some delicious dandelion greens and get healthy!

Here's a photo of the early morning sunlight penetrating the dense canopy of the Knysna forest... to light up a pair of Ganoderma Applanatum mushrooms... which were firmly attached to the base of a large ironwood tree (Olea Capensis).

This particular species of fungus contains antiviral, antibacterial and anti-parasitic properties... and DNA analysis of elephant droppings has conclusively proved that the last remaining Knysna elephant(s) actively seek out and eat these mushrooms. This gives some credence to the legend that generations of people in the Knysna area used to strain the liquid from boiled elephant dung... to drink as a medicinal tea to detoxify and boost health.

Yuk... I don't care how beneficial it might be... you won't ever catch me drinking boiled elephant poo!

I found this out today, that cauliflower is low in fat, high in dietary fibre, folate, water and vitamin C, possessing a very high nutritional density.

As a member of the brassica family, cauliflower shares with broccoli and cabbage several phytochemicals which are beneficial to our health, including sulforaphane, an anti-cancer compound released when cauliflower is chopped or chewed.

Boiling reduces the levels of anti-cancer compounds, with losses of 20–30% after five minutes, 40–50% after ten minutes, and 75% after thirty minutes.

However, other preparation methods such as steaming, micro waving, and stir frying had no significant effect on the compounds.

Along with other brassica vegetables, cauliflower is a source of indole-3-carbinol, a chemical which boosts DNA repair in cells and appears to block the growth of cancer cells.

The compound also appears to work as an anti-oestrogen, appearing to slow or prevent the growth of tumours of the breast and prostate.

Cauliflower also contains other glucosinolates besides sulfurophane, substances which may improve the liver's ability to detoxify carcinogenic substances.

A high intake of cauliflower has been found to reduce the risk of aggressive prostate cancer.

Wishing you well and stay safe .

Have a wonderful day, filled with love and beauty, M, (*_*)

Sulphur-crested Cockatoo

Their distinctive raucous call can be very loud; it is meant to travel through the forest environments in which they live, including tropical and subtropical rainforests. These birds are naturally curious creatures, as well as very intelligent. They have adapted very well to European settlement in Australia and live in many urban areas.

These birds are very long lived, and can live upwards of 70 years in captivity, [citation needed] although they only live to about 20–40 years in the wild. They have been known to engage in geophagy, the process of eating clay to detoxify their food. Cockatoos also emit a very fine powder to waterproof themselves instead of oil as other creatures.

The bamboo lemurs are characterized by a grey-brown fur, which varies by species. Their muzzles are short and their ears are round and hairy. Lengths vary from 26 to 46 cm, with tails just as long or longer, and they weigh up to 2.5 kg.

Bamboo lemurs prefer damp forests where bamboo grows. Although they can be active any time of the day, they are often active just after dawn. Though primarily arboreal, they sometimes come down to the ground. The Lac Alaotra gentle lemur or bandro (Hapalemur alaotrensis), which lives in the reed beds of Lac Alaotra, spends much of its time in water and can swim well, unlike other lemur species, which only venture to water to drink.

Gestation lasts 135 to 150 days and ends between September and January, when the female bears one to two young. These are weaned after about four months (if the food supply is ample) and are fully mature at two years of age. Their life expectancy is up to 12 years.

Mexican Mint (Plectranthus argentatus) or Indian Borage offers excellent form and leaf color in addition to aroma.

It has a plethora of health benefits that include its ability to improve skin, detoxify the body, defend against cough and cold, ease arthritis pain, relieve stress, and optimize digestion.

Dioscorea is a genus of over 600 species of flowering plants in the family Dioscoreaceae, native throughout the tropical and warm temperate regions of the world. The vast majority of the species are tropical, with only a few species extending into temperate climates.

Dioscorea is named after the ancient Greek physician and botanist Dioscorides. They are tuberous herbaceous perennial lianas, growing to 2–12 m or more tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, broad a d heart-shaped. The flowers are individually inconspicuous, greenish-yellow, with six petals; they are mostly dioecious, with separate male and female plants, though a few species are monoecious, with male and female flowers on the same plant. The fruit is a capsule in most species, a soft berry in a few species.

Several species, known as yams, are important agricultural crops in tropical regions, grown for their large tubers. Many of these are toxic when fresh, but can be detoxified and eaten, and are particularly important in parts of Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

One class of toxins found in many species is steroidal saponins, which can be converted into steroid hormones for use in medicine and as contraceptives.

Like all marsupial babies, baby koalas are called joeys. A koala joey is the size of a jellybean! It has no hair, no ears, and is blind. Joeys crawl into their mother's pouch immediately after birth, and stay there for about six months. That's about how long it takes for them to see, grow ears and hair, and walk (or waddle) on their own.

When they're about six months old, joeys venture out into the world, although they stay pretty close to their mother—usually by riding on her back.

Koalas survive on a diet of eucalyptus leaves and can eat up to a kilogram a day! Pretty impressive, considering eucalyptus is poisonous to most animals.Their special fibre digesting organ, called a caecum, helps to detoxify the chemicals in the leaves.

However, they can be quite picky eaters, eating less than 50 of over 700 eucalypt species. Even then, they’ll often choose leaves at the top of the tallest trees that contain more liquid and nutrients – only the best for Australia’s koalas!

Amanita muscaria poisoning occurs in either young children or people ingesting it to have a hallucinogenic experience. Occasionally, immature button forms have been mistaken for puffballs.[48] Additionally, the white spots can be washed away during heavy rain and it then may seem as the edible A. caesarea.

Amanita muscaria contains a number of biologically active agents, at least one of which, muscimol, is known to be psychoactive. Ibotenic acid, a neurotoxin, serves as a prodrug to muscimol, with approximately 10-20% converting to muscimol upon ingestion. A toxic dose in adults is approximately 6 mg muscimol or 30 to 60 mg ibotenic acid; this is typically about the amount found in one cap of Amanita muscaria.[52] However, the amount and ratio of chemical compounds per mushroom varies widely from region to region and season to season, which further confuses the issue. Spring and summer mushrooms have been reported to contain up to 10 times as much ibotenic acid and muscimol compared to autumn fruitings.

A fatal dose has been calculated at an amount of 15 caps. Deaths from this fungus A. muscaria has been reported in historical journal articles and newspaper reports; however, with modern medical treatment a fatal outcome because of the poison of this mushroom would be extremely rare. Many older books list it as "deadly" but this is a mistake that gives the impression it is far more toxic than it actually is.The North American Mycological Association has stated there are absolutely no reliably documented fatalities in the past century. The vast majority (90% or more) of mushroom poisoning deaths are from having eaten either the greenish to yellowish death cap (A. phalloides) or perhaps even one of the several white Amanita species which are known as destroying angels.

The active constituents of this species are water soluble, and boiling and then discarding the cooking water will at least partly detoxify A. muscaria. However, drying may

As it is still October... sadly cancer-awareness month, I thought I'd upload something 'different'?

I have 2 friends and the husband of a friend, on different Continents going through gruelling Chemotherapy...

I try to give them as much POSITIVITY and support as I can.

Another flickr user which we've met, just lost his mum, 6 months after his sister, he is in my thoughts!

I lost my sister and my best friend who was like a brother to me…

I don't think there is anybody that hasn't been 'touched' by the awful disease; it is the lottery of horror.

The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Cacatua galerita, is one of the larger and more widespread of Australia's cockatoos... Typically these birds will weigh around 800 grams. In most cases, male birds can be distinguished from females with their almost black eyes, whereas the female has a more red/brown coloured eye. Their distinctive raucous call can be very loud; it is meant to travel through the forest environments in which they live, including tropical and subtropical rainforests. These birds are naturally curious creatures, as well as very intelligent. They have adapted very well to European settlement in Australia and live in many urban areas. These birds are very long lived, and can live upwards of 70 years in captivity, although they only live to about 20-40 years in the wild. They have been known to engage in geophagy, the process of eating clay to detoxify their food. These birds also emit a very fine powder to waterproof themselves instead of oil as other creatures.

Disintegration: 30 years today (yesterday). This was the best thing that could happen to The Cure and not exactly the best that could happen to their record label, after the success of "Kiss Kiss Kiss". Songs with two minute instrumental intros?

Every time you get too much (spot)lights, consider going back to a nice sweet shadowed place where you can detoxify and create what you really like. Just as Robert Smith did back in 1989. Maybe the Cure's best album ever. Ok, I don't like to celebrate "days" but May 2nd should be the International Disintegration Day, not only the 500 year anniversary of Leonardo Da Vinci's death...

This shot was taken while travelling to Northeastern part of India in Assam. This is where I stayed for couple of days and it became memorable for years. A DRAMATIC NEW MEXICO SKY IS REFLECTED IN THE CURVED MIRRORS OF THE PARABOLIC TROUGH.

RESEARCHERS AT SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES HAVE DEVELOPED A METHOD OF USING CONCENTRATED SUNLIGHT TO DETOXIFY WATER. THE METHOD USES A TROUGH OF PARABOLIC MIRRORS TO FOCUS ENERGY ON A LONG GLASS TUBE. CONTAMINATED WATER AND TITANIUM DIOXIDE IS THEN PUMPED THROUGH THE TUBE AND INTO A RECEIVING TANK. THE TITANIUM DIOXIDE ACTS AS A CATALYST, SPEEDING UP THE REACTION OF THE WATER WITH ULTRAVIOLET ENERGY IN SUNLIGHT. FREE ELECTRONS CREATE POSITIVELY CHARGED "HOLES" IN THE CATALYST, WHICH IN TURN REACT WITH DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, OR WATER TO CREATE HYDROXYL RADICALS AND PEROXIDE IONS. THESE TWO HIGHLY REACTIVE OXIDES ATTACK THE ORGANICS, BREAKING THEM INTO ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE COMPONENTS.

From Organic Facts... Did you know? The most interesting health benefits of rosemary include its ability to boost memory, improve mood, reduce inflammation, relieve pain, protect the immune system, stimulate circulation, detoxify the body, protect the body from bacterial infections, prevent premature aging, and heal skin conditions. WOW!

About 1 1/2 years ago, my son told me, that he had to do a school project, for which he had to observe some creature for a certain time. We were talking about wild things like selfbred glow in the dark rabbits and stuff. Later, we were doing some research on internet and found out, that there are some luminiscent mushrooms and a few of them are available for breeding.

A neighbor gave me some fresh beech logs, which needed to be aged for a few months before I could seed them with wooden plugs, which contained some mycellium of that mushroom.

The project turned out to be really interesting, but also lengthy. This is, why we have cloned oyster mushrooms, too. Now, the little mushrooms starts growing out of the beech logs and I have taken another picture to document it. The school project was successfully finished about a year ago, though.

Panellus stipticus is one of several dozen species of fungi that are bioluminescent. Strains from eastern North America are typically bioluminescent, but those from the Pacific coast regions of North America and from other continents are not. The luminescence is localized to the edges of the gills and the junction of the gills with the stem and cap.

The luminescent glow of this and other fungi inspired the term foxfire, coined by early settlers in eastern and southern North America. Modern research has probed the potential of P. stipticus as a tool in bioremediation, because of its ability to detoxify various environmental pollutants.

I have bought the mycellium at www.waldviertlerpilzgarten.at/
