This is just another shot of the determined chipmunk trying to finish up my sunflower blooms. Each time I went outside, he would scurry away and return the minute I went back in the house :)

Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.

This stump was an ancient white cedar. They cling to these cliffs and have been determined to be 600-800 years old. Although protected in this conservation area there is ample evidence along the cliff of those who have succumbed to the elements in this harsh and very exposed location.

This determined red-headed woodpecker definitely has a good solid grip on that quaking aspen tree branch. I would not want it to land on my bare arm if it decides to fly my way.

If you climb to the top of two-tired Virginia Falls in Glacier National Park, you will be fascinated with the views. It starts with sparkling crystal clear water in a riverbed lined with striking colorful pebbles of different shades of red and green. At formation, small amounts of iron in their composition combined with varying oxygen levels determined their colors. Red means oxygen was present and green means the air was lacking oxygen.

You see a gorgeous two-tiered waterfall that seems to vanish into what was once a lush forest when looking down the slope. A past forest fire left its scars on the land. Raise your eyes higher, and you see some of the towering peaks found in Glacier National Park.

I was determined to wring something painterly from my Helios 44-2 58 amd mounted it on my Nikon D850 using a Nikon PK 11A teleconverter with the thin type m42 adapter. I used a wide open aperture for this shot but did stop down as far as f/5.6 for some shots. I honestly thought I had some wonderful painterly bokeh when checking the LCD.. sadly I didn't notice that the tiny flowerhead of the Stitchwort in all my shots had a sort of glow around them..I have noticed the same thing from other lenses but hadn't used the Helios in years and never on the Nikon. The only way to stop this looking a bit err, a lot spectral imho, was to use the paintbrush in photoshop and carefully paint away the offending glow from just around the white petals and burn the detail back into the petals. The annoying thing was the histogram looked perfect with no blown highlights. The spectral glow simply a feature of that lens...

I started to catch up with everyone yesterday btw but as I cook dinner as my family come on a Wednesday as well as fetching Leo from school and collecting his guitar from his home on the way etc etc, I am still behind as time was short so my apologies....Sue :)

These little roses seem determined to keep blooming. I think this is a lesson for all of us. Don't give up even in the toughest of circumstances!

Wishing everyone a good week. Thanks so much for your visits!!

Plant galls are often highly organized structures so that the cause of the gall can often be determined without the actual agent being identified. This applies particularly to some insect and mite plant galls.

Thanks for taking time to fave, comment and look at my picture. I really appreciate it.

With all the processing options available today, it seems we become programmed to look at photos and immediately analyze what might be done to tweak them to make them better in some way. I recall when I first began photography 8 or so years ago, I knew nothing about anything and thus deleted at least 90% of my photos upon review, often all of them. Now, even though I still don't know much, I delete none on the basis of being possibly able to do something with them. Sometimes I do with pleasing results. Most of the time I do not and they remain buried in the archives where they will probably never do more than take up space.

When this view of the far north end of the lake (where the turtles bask in the spring and summer but have now already vanished into their hibernational haunts) appeared, now habitual thinking said, "what does this need?" I thought for a while and finally determined that there was really nothing I could do to make this photo better. Different maybe, but not better. Perhaps you agree.

So here you have it...an actual unenhanced SOOC snap shot of my beloved northwoods entering prime time for color. Maybe not too artsy...but still kind of pretty...;-))

1598

Alfonso II, the last Duke of the Este family, dies and the territories of the Duchy of Ferrara pass to the Papal State. In the meantime, the Po Delta advanced northwards with branches of Tramontana, Levante and Scirocco.

The Po di Tramontana, in particular, began with its sediments to raise the depths of the lagoon towards Chioggia.

1600-1604

For fear that the north-eastern expansion of the Delta would bury the Venice lagoon, in the early 1600s the Po was diverted south towards the Sacca di Goro with an artificial canal which is its current bed. This intervention called "Taglio di Porto Viro", determined the beginning of the formation of the modern Delta.

The old bed became a navigable canal, the Canal Bianco-Po di Levante. If before 1600 the Delta expanded by about 53 hectares a year, from 1604 to 1840 it increased to 135 hectares a year.

I was determined to try and learn something new with time off work this week.

Having been curious about adding textures to photos for a while (inspired by photographers such as my talented friend www.flickr.com/photos/joanatkinson/) I decided that this kestrel (I think!) seen out on a walk, but snapped with my little compact at a distance so not great quality, might be a good starting point.

I don't have access to Photoshop, but managed to find a couple of tutorials for Gimp. After much head scratching I've managed this, but I think I probably need to learn about masking. I used the eraser tool to remove the texture from the kestrel, but it seemed to change the colours too, even at full opacity. I've no idea why as I've only ever cloned and smudged in Gimp before!

If anyone knows of any good materials for learning more (or suggestions for improving this image) I'd love to know!

For some reason, people have been telling me what they think of me recently. I've had scary (x2), determined, disciplined, amiable, enthusiastic and anally retentive. Don't I sound like a barrel of laughs 😂 Here I employed determination to get out of bed at 1:30am 😁

Don't think I've posted this one before, the wider view from my amazing morning on Latrigg.

Woodbridge Nature Preserve, near Lodi, California

Sunrise at Mesa Arch, every photographer dream... We all have in mind this amazing picture of the sun rising over the La Sal mountains, hitting the bottom of the arch, creating an amazing scenery.

I was determined to get one of those, but you know what? Nature flipped me off. Lots of clouds and no sun. Kind of a bummer when you've traveled thousand of miles and when you know this is probably the only attempt you'll have in you life to take this shot.

Anyway, the landscape was amazing so I enjoyed my breakfast here and tried to make the most of the weather situation ! This picture might not be as impressive as the "usual" views of Mesa Arch but I liked the glow and the clouds/sunbeams were very interesting.

Even without the sun, it was an amazing moment.

Let me know what you think of this picture ! I will be glad to read your comments ! Feel free to browse though my gallery as well !

....popping up through the gravel drive

I'm still trying to outsmart this tenacious individual who raids our bird feeders. They're quick learners and realising that beyond me shooing it away it doesn't have a lot to fear so waits until I'm a couple of meters away and scampers behind the shed, onto the fence and to the top of the conifer hedge where it waits for me to go back inside and then quickly returns for another feed while I'm not looking.

Unfortunately, here in the UK they are considered a pest because they have displaced the native red squirrel in all but a few places. The grey's are often infected with squirrel pox which they are resilient to, unfortunately the disease is fatal to red squirrels and it is this factor which has decimated our red squirrel population. Shame because they are entertaining to watch.

This Tufted Titmouse was determined to get at the seed, even through the much larger Grey Squirrel.

The first time I saw a Short-tailed Hawk it was in a Cypress Tree having lunch. I looked and looked through my bird books and references online and couldn't identify it. It was a dark phased individual and everywhere I had been looking showed it in its light phase, like this one. When I saw this one soaring down in Miami, I was pretty sure that it was a Short-tailed. Looking at images online I believe that this one is a juvenile. The adult has a more distinctively dark head and whiter chest and belly. They eat smaller birds, like grackles, red-winged black birds and meadowlarks. I've read that they hunt from the air, often making a series of swoops down taking their prey off a perch or possibly in the air. It's a sight I've never seen and only rarely see this species. (Buteo brachyurus)

Correction. Thanks to the help of several folks and my own research I've determined that this is a Red-shouldered Hawk. (I hope I'm right.) Short tailed hawks have a cleaner belly and chest and the light phase has a very dark head and the white of the chest forms a thick line up to the bill. Learning is half the fun.

Hummingbird in flight

Hello to all my Flickr friends. As many of you know, just over a year ago my beautiful wife Marilyn had a stroke. Her road to recovery has had its ups and downs. Last February, she came home from the rehab hospital in a wheelchair, but by late spring she was able to walk short distances with the aid of a walker. She was gaining strength and more independence with each passing day. Unfortunately, this past November she had two falls, with the second one putting her back in the hospital. But again, her strong determination has resulted in her fighting through the pain as a result of the falls, and the limitations caused by the stroke. Another Christmas and New Year day in hospital, but she will be home soon. I took this photograph over forty years ago when I was shooting and developing black and white film with my Canon 35 mm SLR camera. I love her look of determination, which has been one of her qualities ever since I’ve known her. This determined spirit has been very strong over the course of this past year.

For all of us, this past year has been difficult, but we must always look forward to the New Year and tackle any challenges, good or bad, that come our way. So, to all of you, a very Happy and healthy New Year.

My participation on Flickr will continue to be limited in the coming new year, but hopefully by the summer I will return on a more regular basis.

The film that I used for this photograph was Kodak Tri-X pushed to 1600 ISO using Diafine developer to process the negatives.
