Macro Mondays theme ''Mysterious''
This image was created using a transparent bowl filled with water, a little cooking oil and a few drops of liquid detergent. The bowl was placed on top of a colourful image. To take this picture I had to go very close from the liquid surface. Hope you will enjoy!
So, why don’t oil mix with water? Well, it will remain a mystery for most of us, but apparently it has to do with the molecules polarity. Of course, density is another part of the mystery. Oil has a lesser density than water. This is why it floats on top of the water

Sunlight household soap was introduced by the British company Lever Brothers in 1884. It was the world's first packaged, branded laundry soap.Designed for washing clothes and general household use, the success of the product led to the name for the company's village for its workers, Port Sunlight. The soap formula was invented by a Bolton chemist named William Hough Watson, who also became an early business partner. Watson's process created a new soap, using glycerin and vegetable oils such as palm oil rather than tallow (animal fats). William Lever and his brother James Darcy Lever invested in Watson's soap invention and its initial success came from offering bars of cut, wrapped, and branded soap in his father's grocery shop. This was an early labour-saving device for the housewife as prior to this, commercially made soap was bought in long bars. It's a little tricky to capture soap bubbles and their iridescent colors, so I decided to place a bit of soapy detergent and water in a bowl.
Then placing a straw in the mixture, I carefully blew through the straw, creating a mass of bubbles. It was a race to capture the colors before the bubbles popped.
If you're a fan of music from the 1920's, you might enjoy this guitarist's rendition of the song, I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles. It was a big favorite of mine as a child. What a treat to have a musical grandmother and mother that filled my head with songs.

Chaplin Lake is a large saline body of water on the Canadian prairie, covering about 20 sq km but only a few inches deep. When the shallow water warms in spring, billions of brine shrimp hatch and provide a feast for thousands of shorebirds on their northward migratory journey. Usually this occurs in late April and early May.
But I don't think there is a "usual" or "normal" anymore. Many, many people have remarked on the strange, abnormal spring we're having, here and elsewhere. For example, I planted spinach in my garden on March 19. That's more than a month early; most years the earth remains frozen until late April. I covered it with a plastic sheet. The seeds germinated and I now have a healthy bed of baby spinach.
However, following the unseasonal warm spell came an unseasonal cold spell, and some terrible weather that swept through Montana, the Dakotas, Manitoba and western Ontario, bringing blizzard conditions and stopping the bird migration for many days. When my friend Lori took me on a guided tour of the restricted area of Chaplin Lake, there were no birds. She said the dykes and mounds should be covered with shorebirds at this time.
Likewise, she told me she had never seen ice wedged and piled on the lake shore like this so late in the season. The top left photo, however, isn't snow; it's sodium sulphate! Chaplin Lake is a huge producer of this mineral salt, an inorganic compound used in the production of pulp and paper, detergents, and in glass making.
Saskatchewan Mining and Minerals, the company that works this rich resource, manages water levels in the lake to ensure habitat protection for the migratory shorebirds while mining a world-class quality product. They work closely with government and environmental groups. A refreshing atmosphere of co-operation not always present with mining operations.
More than half the world's population of Sanderlings stop at Chaplin Lake, along with significant numbers of Stilt Sandpipers, Semi-palmated Sandpipers, Piping Plovers, and many other species.
I'm planning to head back up there in mid-May, expecting a pretty good show!

Artsy macro composition using glitter paper background off which a pair of LED lights were bounced to back light a glass container of oil, water and detergent.
Playing. Bubbles in a bottle. LED lighting. Focus stacked using zerene. It is full colour. I was rinsing out a hand soap bottle when I noticed it was quite optically clear and decided to photograph the bubbles inside.
Concentrated detergent tablets for dishwashers contain strong caustic compounds that are poisonous if swallowed. Unfortunately bright colours make them irresistible to children. Please keep out of reach.

More emulsion photography. Last weekend, the Poly Photo club in San Diego put on a workshop that included a presentation by one of our members about how to create emulsion art using whole milk, food coloring and dish washing detergent. I loved seeing the results by our members, and decided to try it. Here's a link to a website that shows exactly how to do it:

Lighting stuff: I used a bare YN560-III, in manual mode, to put some light to to the emulsion. The flash was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. I've also posted a picture of the setup that I used, because sometimes people find that to be helpful. Check the first comment down below to see the setup.

Outtake from Macro Monday's theme "In a Bottle" (please see first comment). Believe it or not, this is the "water with olive oil and dish detergent" version. In fact the images with water and oil hadn't turned out the way I wanted to, maybe it was not enough oil, I don't know. I then wanted to clean the vial, and noticed that the mixture of soap, oil and water made extra "fluffy" bubbles (though not white bubbles anymore, of course, but rather yellow-ish ones), so I decided to take some more captures before finally cleaning the vial. When I developed the image, I again did some split toning and tweaked the colours' saturation in LR and ON1 in order to jazz the rather dull artificial light colours up.

Irlanda - Parque Nacional de Killarney - Lago Leane y Castillo Ross
ENGLISH:
Lough Leane (from Irish Loch Léin, meaning 'lake of learning'[citation needed]) is largest of the three lakes of Killarney. The River Laune flows from the lake into the Dingle Bay to the northwest.
The lake's name means "lake of learning" probably in reference to the monastery on Innisfallen, an island in the lake. Innisfallen was a centre of scholarship in the early Middle Ages, producing the Annals of Innisfallen and, according to legend, educating King Brian Boru.
Another historic site, the tower house Ross Castle sits on Ross Island in the lake. Ross Island is rich in copper. Archaeological evidence suggests the island has been mined since the time of the Bronze Age Beaker People.
Lough Leane is approximately 19 square kilometres (4,700 acres) in size. It is also the largest body of fresh water in the region. It has become eutrophic as a result of phosphates from agricultural and domestic pollution entering Lough Leane Reedbed, an important habitat on the edge of Lough Leane. This nutrient enrichment has caused several algal blooms in recent years. The blooms have not yet had a severe effect on the lake's ecosystem. To prevent further pollution causing a permanent change in the lake's ecosystem, a review of land use in the catchment area is being carried out. Water quality in the lake appears to have improved since phosphates were removed from sewage in 1985. As of August 2007, several large hotels and businesses have stated their intention to stop using phosphate detergents, in an effort to preserve the quality of the lake water. Lake cruises for tourists leave from Ross Castle, and boats can be hired for the trip to Innisfallen Island.
Ross Castle (Irish: Caisleán an Rois) is a 15th-century tower house and keep on the edge of Lough Leane, in Killarney National Park, County Kerry, Ireland. It is the ancestral home of the O'Donoghue clan, though it is better known for its association with the Brownes of Killarney who owned the castle until more recently.
The castle is operated by the Office of Public Works, and is open to the public seasonally with guided tours.
Ross Castle was built in the late 15th century by local ruling clan the O'Donoghues Mor (Ross), though ownership changed hands during the Second Desmond Rebellion of the 1580s to the MacCarthy Mór. He then leased the castle and the lands to Sir Valentine Browne, ancestor of the Earls of Kenmare. The castle was amongst the last to surrender to Oliver Cromwell's Roundheads during the Irish Confederate Wars, and was only taken when artillery was brought by boat via the River Laune. Lord Muskerry (MacCarty) held the castle against General Ludlow who marched to Ross with 4,000 foot soldiers and 200 horse; however, it was by water that he attacked the stronghold. The Irish had a prophecy that Ross could never be taken until a warship could swim on the lake, an unbelievable prospect.

The ships were built in Kinsale, brought by water to Killorglin and then dragged by oxen to Ross Castle. The sight of the ships unnerved the onlookers and the castle soon submitted.
At the end of the wars, the Brownes were able to show that their heir was too young to have taken part in the rebellion and they retained the lands. By about 1688, they had erected a mansion house near the castle, but their adherence to James II of England caused them to be exiled. The castle became a military barracks, which remained so until early in the 19th century. The Brownes did not return to live at Ross but built Kenmare House near Killarney.
There is a legend that O'Donoghue leaped or was sucked out of the window of the grand chamber at the top of the castle and disappeared into the waters of the lake along with his horse, his table and his library. It is said that O'Donoghue now lives in a great palace at the bottom of the lake where he keeps a close eye on everything that he sees.

El más grande de los lagos es Lough Leane (lago Leane); los otros dos se llaman Muckross Lake (lago Muckross) y Upper Lake (lago Superior). These towers have to be cleaned periodically to prevent the build up of Legionella bacteria and the cleaning crew have used a bit too much detergent!
As a retired building services manager, this foam 'event' happened to a few of the high rise buildings that I looked after. The city's by-law inspectors where not impressed to say the least!
