I spent much of my childhood in this and the adjacent woodlands. Last winter contractors who were supposed to be removing ash trees suffering from die-back destroyed great swathes of the woodland before they were sacked. Many of the trees they cut down were beech. This isn't a particularly pictorial image but is my take on the destruction caused.
The Japanese beetle: a gleaming menace that devours our gardens and invades the landscape. An invading intruder that no one wants to see and that is unwelcome.
Japanese beetles are a serious pest for agriculture, landscaping, and turf management, causing significant damage to ornamental plants, fruit crops, and lawns. Their invasive nature and broad diet make them a persistent challenge for gardeners and farmers.

I've seen many forests destroyed by human and his brainless greediness, but this one, located in National Park of High Tatras was affected by several natural disasters, like severe storms and fires. Spruce forests in Smokovec are recovering slowly and hopefully, one day, they will restore their previous glory.

Place Royale (Royal Square) is a historic square in the centre of Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.
In 1608, the French explorer Samuel de Champlain established the settlement that would become Quebec City on the site of Place Royale. For this reason, the square is often referred to as “the cradle of French civilization in America.
By the 1620s, the square hosted the city's first market, inspiring its original name of Market Square (French: Place du Marché). The settlement would develop rapidly during the 17th century, forming what is now called the Lower Town (French: Basse-Ville) of Quebec City. A fire in 1682 ravaged the wood structures of the settlement, prompting the construction of new stone buildings that would establish the architectural style of the square. In 1686, a bust of King Louis XIV was erected in the square by Intendant Jean Bochart de Champigny, inspiring its current name of Place Royale.
Place Royale would experience significant destruction at the hands of the British Army of General James Wolfe in the 1759 Battle of the Plains of Abraham, a pivotal battle in the Seven Years' War.
The advent in the 19th century of the industrial revolution, which favored metal over wood, and the growth of the port of Montreal led Place Royale to lose its role as a commercial hub.
A restoration project in the second half of the 20th Century removed additions made to the square from the period of British control onwards, returning to the space its original French colonial character and architecture. The project, started in 1970, cost $20 million ($162 million in 2024).

The southern ocean takes its toll on these wonderful limestone sea stacks each year, eroding them further so that eventually they all crumble into the sea.

Four and a half miles out from Ruby beach towers an island in the shape of a skeletal human hand. It's 80' above sea level and 33 acres around. On this sunless day the name didn't help its gloomy appearance accentuated by an abandoned 92' lighthouse standing darkly in the distance like something straight out of the Lord of the Rings. The reefs around the island are known to have claimed three ships over the years, but that's not where the name came from. In the late 1700's two different ships twelve years apart sent a long boat to shore to collect wood and water, neither returned.
Today, visiting the island is prohibited to all but research scientists who go there to check up on what is almost the Tufted Puffin's last stand in Washington State. They make their homes by burrowing into the loose soil atop the sandstone beneath and have no natural predators as there are no eagles or hawks out there.
For you Fresnel Lens fans, the original light, in service from 1892-1995, was rescued and is preserved and displayed at the Westport Maritime Museum. It's beautiful.
With the Bug Fire burning not far away, and a truck sitting in what will probably be its final resting place, a UP train had successfully tackled Beckwourth Pass and was about to duck under a hill before entering the Sierra Valley.
I had found this spot on my friend and I's previous trip out here, originally wanting a shot of a manifest from the top of the tunnel. What you don't see on Google Maps is this truck, as it was completely covered by the trees and shadows. By the time the train had showed up though, I wasn't thrilled with how the light looked and wanted redemption, and I sure got it.
The afternoon started with shooting an MNPRVX at Doyle. When we found out about this train originally, we were in Quincy, this train was at Sand Pass, and MGRRV was running a few hours behind it at Ronda, which is a siding between Gerlach, NV and Antelope Hill. On our way over, we saw a massive plume of smoke from a nearby wildfire burning. We immediately agreed on making it a priority to get a good shot of the wildfire with a train. After racing to Doyle to get the first train, it was off to Sand Pass for the MGRRV.
After we got our shot with the soon to be knocked searchlights, the train moved decently slow despite being extremely short. With this in mind, we caught it at Omira and pulled off a couple pacing shots before heading to Reno Junction. Screaming down Highway 395 to this spot, we were amazed by how big the smoke cloud was. This cloud was the result of the Fred and Bug Fires merging into one massive fire, and it was burning right on the other side of that mountain. This was about the same time I realized the shot I wanted was going to have the fire directly behind the train, so I was excited. After getting there, we had a long wait, ended up being about an hour and a half, and watching the smoke and firefighting planes fly over was quite something.
During this wait, I also decided to really take a look at the truck that peaked my interest for this shot in the first place. I already knew by the 4x4 decal that this was a Ford, but upon taking the time to look at the body I realized it was almost certainly a 10th gen F150, though in that condition at first glance it looked like it could have been an 11th as well. It also got me thinking how it ended up there, looking at other satellite imagery it looks to have only been dumped here in the past few years, but also why it was abandoned and why here? With the condition it is in, unfortunately, this truck will undoubtedly never see the road ever again, as the damage would probably make building a new one from the ground up cheaper.
