Signs of the Zodiac incorporated in the colourful designwork

Penrhyn Castle is a country house in Llandygai, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales, constructed in the style of a Norman castle. The Penrhyn estate was founded by Ednyfed Fychan. In the 15th century his descendent Gwilym ap Griffith built a fortified manor house on the site.

UNDECIDED WRITINGS

What is Sugo?

Sugo is not just a new magazine: above all it's a new magazine and for this reason, maybe, it's easier to define it by negation.

It is not a magazine dedicated to a specific subject or to a unique discipline; it doesn't cover only one field of expression or one culture. The name itself, Sugo (sauce) represents well the spirit of the magazine: a balanced mix of various ingredients, each of them with their own characteristics that, all together, will make an inviting magazine, always different, surprising and which speaks about something necessary, interesting, fresh and new.

Sugo goes through all the different expressions of visual arts - namely graphic-design, web design, photography, illustration, contemporary art, video, industrial design but also, why not? music, writing and cookery - with a special eye to the emerging trends. In a period in which visual communication is playing an increasing role in all the fields of our daily life and the borders among the different disciplines are going to disappear, Sugo represents a unique project in the Italian editorial panorama and reflects the evolution of the contemporary culture.

The Holiday House Geographic, built in 1961, is among the most desirable vintage travel trailers in the world. One of only two currently known to be in existence, the body of this trailer was designed by world renowned industrial engineer, Chuck Pelly, designer of the Scarab race car and founder of Designworks USA, which is BMW's California Studio.

The Holiday House factory burned down in 1962, and the molds that survived were discarded years later.

This 1961 Holiday House Geographic has been completely restored from the frame up with no expense spared, by Flyte Camp, in Bend, OR.

The top-tier rooms and suites at the Mandarin Oriental Jakarta overlook to this magnificent view of the Welcome Monument aka Hotel Indonesia Roundabout. I could never get enough of taking pictures of this roundabout; and it is probably the one spot in Jakarta that I have shot repeatedly from many angles and height.

Personally, I think the best view of the roundabout is the one taken from the opposite direction of the hotel.

Amer Fort or Amber Fort is a fort located in Amer, Rajasthan, India. Amer is a town with an area of 4 square kilometres, located 11 kilometres from Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. The town of Amer and the Amber Fort were originally built by Raja Man Singh and additions were, later, made by Sawai Jai Singh. Located high on a hill, it is the principal tourist attraction in Jaipur. Amer Fort is known for its artistic style elements. With its large ramparts and series of gates and cobbled paths, the fort overlooks Maota Lake, which is the main source of water for the Amer Palace.

Mughal architecture greatly influenced the architectural style of several buildings of the fort. Constructed of red sandstone and marble, the attractive, opulent palace is laid out on four levels, each with a courtyard. It consists of the Diwan-e-Aam, or "Hall of Public Audience", the Diwan-e-Khas, or "Hall of Private Audience", the Sheesh Mahal (mirror palace), or Jai Mandir, and the Sukh Niwas where a cool climate is artificially created by winds that blow over a water cascade within the palace. Hence, the Amer Fort is also popularly known as the Amer Palace.

Back in the late 80's I worked for a graphic design company named Designworks and in those pre-internet days had to do several deliveries. The furthest I had to go was Wokingham and I regularly stopped at this pub on those travels. Here, 30 years later was a shot taken on my most recent visit. Great memories!

Measuring at 7feet tall and 5feet long, RAGEkitty is my largest MOC yet!

First assembled at BrickWorld Chicago, I had never previously fully put her together and took a chance on my mediocre calculations and designwork that she would fit come the event. The LEGO gods heard my prayers cause she fit perfectly and didnt tip over ! (Yes, and those curious, there is a wooden beam counterbalancing the head with the body that runs from the front leg all the way up to the left ear, because gravity dammit!).

Nominated for Best Creature at BrickWorld Chicago! I had initially intended on getting better photos once I got home but as of right now I dont care to put her together for perhaps semi-decent photographs - as I have never photographed anything this large. I did want to at least post a picture that showed the scale, hence silly me in the photo!

Sadly I wont be attending any more brick conventions this year so this was her one and only showing, but I'm happy that it was successfull and I can say I did it!

The Holiday House travel-trailer company was launched in 1959 by David Holmes of the Harry & David mail-order fruit company, who wanted to keep his employees busy during the off-season. The aluminum-skinned trailers stood out with their modern design and panoramic front windows, in contrast to the rounded “canned ham” trailers of the day. In 1960, Holmes tapped industrial designer Chuck Pelly (who later founded BMW Designworks in California) to create an ultrafuturistic, high-end offering. Rendered in fiberglass, the wildly styled result was referred to as the Model X—later the Geographic—and was pitched as a “trailer for the rich.” It had a price tag of $8495 when it went on sale the following year, the equivalent of $72,000 today. The concept was too out-there for the market, however, and only a handful were built before a fire destroyed the factory in 1962.

I've been MIA for some time now.. so I figured I'd post a recent pic. I buzzed my hair.. but other than that I'm pretty much the same. Insanely swamped with school/designwork, though... just barely hanging in there!

Hope all you flickr-ers are doing well.

This is a screengrab from "of indian origin" an influential and beautifully designed publication brought out by Nisha John Rao currently based in UK.

Of Indian Origin

This is a ferment house of ideas, creativity, design and all that originating from India or Indians now spread all over the world. Go see for yourself - the designwork and the content is simply wonderful.

An interesting aside here. I have known Nisha briefly from my time in Cochin from 2005 to 2008, as she is the daughter of a friend of mine. When I read the email requesting for high res pictures of the photographs, a few days ago, I knew straight away who Nisha was but she could not place me. Good for me. Who wants to obtain publicity by wheedling and scurrying favors from magazine editors and media personalities ( they all do right ;-))) ). Nah Not me !

So till the time this article went up I kept the information that I knew her to my self.

Nisha John Rao is originally from the field of advertising. The aim of her site in her words

"" is to celebrate the explosion of creativity that is widespread in India and the Indian Diaspora. Being a land of multiple cultures, it is exciting to find different kinds of work created by various designers and artists linked to India by body, mind or soul. I hope you enjoy the site and exploring the creations as much as I am going to enjoy finding and sharing them. """

The exact url of the story is as follows --

Anoop Negi of stocks-and-shares and photography

The photograph visible in the screen grab is that of Badami situated in Karnataka, India and not in Tibet as some other hallowed publication mentioned while including this in their list of 18 amazing photographs from Tibet -- Now that is another story . ;-))

The Raja Mahal (King's Palace), where the kings and the queens had resided till it was abandoned in 1783, was built in the early part of 16th century. Its exterior is simple and unembellished, but the interior chambers of the palace are elaborately royal in their architectural design, decorated with murals of social and religious themes of gods, mythical animals, and people. In the upper floor of the palace, there are traces of mirrors in the ceilings and walls. Its windows, arcaded passages, and layout plan are designed in such a way that the "sunlight and shadow create areas of different moods and temperatures throughout the day". The interior walls of the Mahal have murals of Lord Vishnu. The Mahal has several secret passages.

The Orchha Fort complex, which houses a large number of ancient monuments consisting of the fort, palaces, temple, and other edifices, is located in Orchha town in Madhya Pradesh. The fort and other structures within it were built by the Bundela Rajputs starting from the early 16th century by King Rudra Pratap Singh of the Orchha State and others who followed him.

The fort complex, which is accessed from an arched causeway, leads to a large gateway. This is followed by a large quadrangular open yard surrounded by palaces. These are Raja Mahal or Raja Mandir, Sheesh Mahal, Jahangir Mahal, a temple, gardens and pavilions. The battlements of the fort have ornamentation.

Mandarin Oriental Singapore is one of the city's finest hotels. Opened in February 1987, it has retained much of its charm after two decades of operation; and in fact, keeps getting stronger and better, thanks to the recently completed extensive renovation.

The most striking feature of the hotel is its 18 storey atrium, designed to shape like the hotel's logo: a Chinese Fan!. Like two other hotels in the same complex, all three are designed by one of the most prominent architects in that era: John Portman, widely regarded as the "wizard of atrium" because he popularized the era of large atrium hotels back in the 60s with the opening of Hyatt Regency Atlanta.

When your itinerary takes you to Singapore's Marina area, book yourself a room at the newly renovated Harbour View rooms with one of the city's most breathtaking view of Singapore's harbour and cityscape, similar to this. For me, the atrium alone has been the reason to get me back to the hotel over and over again, most of the time for admiring it, rather than staying.

Jakarta might not have the same world recognition in comparison to its sister cities such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok; or the same high-profile, world-renowned historic landmark hotels such as The Raffles, Singapore, Mandarin Oriental Bangkok or The Peninsula Hong Kong. But it certainly has one of the best kept secrets: a historic hotel that was the precursor of modern five star hotels in South East Asia: Hotel Indonesia.

Little do people know that the 15 storey Grande-Dame was the first five-star hotel in South East Asia when it opened in August 5th, 1962. Originally built to anticipate the 4th Asian Games in 1962, it has ever since became the rendezvous for the rich, famous and powerful Jakartans and has become a symbol of luxury during its heyday.

Competitions arrived in 1974 when both Hyatt Aryaduta (now The Aryaduta) and Sahid Jaya (now Grand Sahid Jaya) opened its doors; and Hilton International (now The Sultan) followed soon after in 1976.

It was only until 1978, when The Mandarin finally opened that it took Indonesia's hospitality scene by storm by taking it to a new level; and it has certainly tamed all competitions. The Mandarin was finally rebranded as Mandarin Oriental, and has long been recognized as the city's finest hotels, until the arrival of the modern super-luxury grand hotels of the 90s and beyond: Grand Hyatt, Ritz-Carltons, Shangri-La, Four Seasons and The Dharmawangsa.

Both Mandarin Oriental and Hotel Indonesia suffered tremendously during the turn of the millennium; and with small cosmetic renovations, they have come to a state of decaying, which culminated by the closure of Hotel Indonesia in 2004.

When financial aids finally came to a rescue, both hotels were closed for the much needed extensive renovation. Mandarin Oriental closed for almost 2 years until it reopened on the 5th October 2009; while Hotel Indonesia closed for 5 years and reopened on the 28th February 2009 as a Kempinski Hotel.

Now that both Grand Dames have been fully rejuvenated, Jakarta could now be proud of having two of the most luxurious hotels in Indonesia; and I will give the first hand review of both hotels shortly. Stay tune!.

One of the most stunning chapels in the world. The Infinity Chapel at the Conrad Bali has become a host to many unforgetable wedding events, including one for a close friend of mine. Built atop a vast manmade edgeless pool, the floating beachfront Chapel stands out above the grounds and sea with stunning sunset as its backdrop. With an area of 117m2 and 12m high ceiling, it could well accommodate 60 guests. This chapel has been the sole reason for my choice of staying at the Conrad Bali.

Best of all, this chapel is designed by three of Indonesia's most prominent architects: Andra Matin, Anthony Liu and Ferry Ridwan, the 3 undisputed master of Indonesian contemporary architecture.
