The Pyrrhuloxia or desert cardinal is a medium-sized North American song bird found in the American southwest and northern Mexico. We have gone to Arizona for several years now. Last March was the first time that we have seen this beautiful bird.

Dune 45 is a dune in the Sossusvlei area of the Namib Desert in Namibia. Its name comes from the fact that it is at the 45th kilometre of the road that connects the Sesriem gate and Sossusvlei.

Tucked high in the Andes, in the far southwestern reaches of Bolivia, is the country's most visited national park, with at least 25,000 tourists visiting annually.

The mountains of Eduardo Avaroa are the highest Andes Mountains on Bolivia's border with Chile and Argentina. They are dotted with erupting volcanoes, hot springs, steaming geysers and fumaroles.

The Tayka desert hotel may be one of the most remote hotels in existence. There is literally nothing anywhere within many miles of this place. Solar panel energy.

A camp fire in the desert under a full moon that peeps from behind the clouds. Can't think to something else that can express the sense of adventure that can be felt there. Love the desert, love the sands, love the moon, love to travel!

In der Wüste

The only roses that I have seen in the desert. Unfortunately, only in the winters, but they thrive this time of year.

Had a chance to capture a neat night shot, so I was getting my camera adjusted for the image. About an hour before the event, I was about to capture this. I love the desert sunsets.

This is one of my first attempts at photoshop so please bear with me lol 🙈

Who can resist a curving highway into the desert landscape? Not I.

Sunrise in Twentynine Palms, California

In the dreams that lie between sleep and wake

the hazy memories of somewhere dance

in golden light and warm embrace

On the first morning at a cottage just outside of Joshua Tree National Park, as the sunrise started to adorn the sky with light and color, I stumbled outside with my camera, barely awake, with only the toes of my feet stuffed into my shoes. After a long day of travel the previous day and a restless night, I was not exactly bouncing out the door with great enthusiasm. I stood on the porch of the cottage, watching the sky turn orange through the silhouettes of the palm trees that lined the edge of the driveway. I lazily took a few shots from there (one of those images is in the first comment below) as my body tried to convince me it really wanted to be sleeping.

My mind however, was intrigued by the path leading out between the palm trees to a low wall with a set of stairs climbing up it; I wondered what the view was like from the top of the wall. So I convinced myself to put my shoes fully on and wander out beyond the trees. I reached the wall and while briefly pondering the "why" of its existence, climbed the half dozen steps to the top of it. From that vantage point, the view opened to a nearly treeless landscape of desert, mountains, and a vast expanse of sky. I stood there for awhile, listening to the silence, watching the colors wash over the land and saturate the sky, until the sun crested the hills and they vanished into its heat and light.

I then returned to the cottage and went back to sleep, awakening awhile later to wonder if I had dreamed the sunrise. Fortunately my camera informed me that I had not :-)

Yet on and on she goes...

“God takes everyone he loves through a desert. It is his cure for our wandering hearts, restlessly searching for a new Eden...

The best gift of the desert is God's presence... The protective love of the Shepherd gives me courage to face the interior journey.”

The Atacama desert lies between the slopes of the Andes and the pacific ocean in Chile and Peru. It is estimated to cover over 100.000 square km and is the driest place on earth.

No grass? No problem! Desert landscaping is beautiful, and it knows no bounds.

Arriving in the desert canyon its dry and hot. Choose the path along the cliff-edge leading to a high perch. Or venture deeper into the canyon to the oasis and camp. The stream continues through a camouflaged opening to a forgotten section of the canyon.

The Katpana Desert (Biang-a Naqpo), known also as Katpana Biang-a or Cold Desert, is a high-altitude desert located in Skardu Valley in District Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The desert contains large sand dunes that are sometimes covered in snow during the winters. Situated at an elevation of 2,226 metres (7,303 ft) above sea level, the Katpana Cold Desert is one of the highest deserts in the world. While the desert technically stretches from the banks of Indus River in the south of Skardu to New Ranga Village in the north, the portion of the desert that is most frequented by tourists is located near Katpana Lake close to Skardu Airport.

Temperatures range from a maximum of 27 °C (81 °F) and a minimum (in October) of 8 °C (46 °F), which can drop further to below −17 °C (1 °F) in December and January. The temperature occasionally drops as low as −25 °C (−13 °F).
