Oddly enough, today I had 2 of my clients ask about Dermaplaning. So what is it? Dermaplaning is performed by a doctor, or at least it should be. I would not advise anyone to go to anyone other than a doctor for this procedure, as a lot can go wrong. It is performed with an instrument called a dermatome, as seen in the photo above. Basically the dermatome is a blade used to scrape the face. I recommend seeing a doctor who has many dermaplaning procedures under his/her belt. The depth of the planing must be very gradual and done with great care. If dermaplaning is too deep scars can occur.
Dermaplaning done by a reputable doctor will be done at a surgeon's office, an outpatient surgery center,as a hospital outpatient, or hospital inpatient. The anesthetic used will vary from doctor to doctor. Some will use general anesthesia, this is reserved for longer services. Some may use a numbing spray or cream along with or instead of local anesthesia. Local anesthesia combined with a relaxant allows the patient to remain awake, but relaxed.
There is the possibility of adverse affects with dermaplaning, and some of those are:
Skin may be very red and swollen, eating and drinking may be difficult for a few days following the treatment, scabbing almost always occurs, tingling, burning or aching may occur. If not done correctly, it can leave permanent scars.
So be careful out there, and take your time finding the right doctor for your needs.
You may wish to have one on hand, literally for emergencies, but no one should go looking for one of these as a permanent solution for hair removal on their face, and certainly no place else.
