Built in 1889, the Sterling attracted celebrities like George Burns, actors Lionel, John and Ethel Barrymore, Harry Houdini and Amelia Earhart, who appeared there prior to the final curtain call in 1945. City Hall and the police station occupied the first floor of the building until 1965. The opera house was the first structure in Connecticut to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. #historic #abandoned #derbyct #abandonedct #sterlingoperahouse
Frozen in time to film, Derby Corporation trolleybus 218 is captured crossing Albert Street into Corn Market from St Peter's Street in 1966. The trolleybus, a Willowbrook bodied Sunbeam F4 was new in 1952, part of a larger batch of these trolleybuses (216-235, DRC216-235), delivered new to Derby Corporation between 1952 and 1953. The entire batch of 20 trolleybuses soldiered on until 1967, when the system was closed.
Today, the only survivor from this batch is 224, which ran on the last day of trolleybus operations in September 1967.

Derby CT 173 (HRC173C) in St James Street, Derby City Centre on 19th July 1983. The bus was one of the many Roe bodied Daimler Fleetlines that were owned and operated by the City's Transport Department.
Dating from 1966, 173 was numerically the 2nd of the Fleetlines (172-239), which were purchased by the Transport Department between 1966 and 1969; some of them arriving as the last of the Corporation’s trolleybuses were being phased out. By the time this picture was taken, these earlier Fleetlines had less than 12-months service ahead of them, after which the majority would be sold for scrap.
The solitary low-height Volvo B55-Ailsa was owned and operated from new by Derby City Transport, spending several years in the service of the municipal operator. The vehicle was often to be seen working services once operated by the former Blue Bus Company of Willington; a well known South Derbyshire independent operator, who's operations had been acquired by Derby City Transport in 1970s. I recall seeing it many times working the Burton-Derby service.
Its registration suggested that it might be number one in the fleet, but the unique bus was given the fleet number 71. It is pictured in Derby Bus Station on 19th July 1983.

Derby CT trolleybus 223 negotiating the large traffic roundabout on the A52 Ashbourne Road at Kingsway. In the backdrop is Markeaton Park. The bus is working the 22 Morden Green - Friar gate - town service, which terminated at Derby's Midland Railway Station. In 1955, there had been a proposal to extended this section of route to Moorgate on the Mackworth housing estate, but this never came to fruition.

Today, several abandoned brick buildings still stand on the south side of Bridge Street, like a silent sentinel to Derby's industrial past.
Derby is home to one of the largest arson fires in the United States history. It happened in 1975 when the Sponge Rubber Products plant (formerly owned by B.F. Goodrich) was set on fire. The explosion that destroyed the Sponge Rubber Plant on Canal Street in 1975 marked the start of the decline of Derby's industries, leaving a landscape of desolate brick warehouses, factories and buildings.

On July 3, 2018, we walked down to Veterans Park in Shelton, CT with our good friends to enjoy the annual Derby-Shelton Fireworks Show/Competition. It was a great time if quite hot and humid which kept some of the smoke close to the ground.

On July 3, 2019, the towns of Shelton and Derby, CT, held their annual dueling fireworks shows (after a free concert on the green). It was a crowded but wonderful time with friends.
