These cases take their name from the virgin Roman goddess of fire, home, hearth and family. Usually Vesta was depicted as the fire in her temple. Only Vestals (her priestesses) were allowed into her temple. Her association with fire made her name the natural choice for British companies who manufactured matches.
"The Syndics," also known as "The Sampling Officials," is a renowned painting created by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn in 1662. It is an exceptional example of group portraiture from the Dutch Golden Age, depicting five men gathered around a table, engaged in their duties as syndics (officers) of the Amsterdam Drapers' Guild.
The painting is notable for its meticulous attention to detail and Rembrandt's skillful use of light and shadow. The figures are positioned in a semi-circle around the table, with their faces illuminated by a strong light source from the left. This dramatic lighting technique creates a sense of depth and dimensionality, drawing the viewer's attention to the individual expressions and gestures of the syndics.
Each syndic is portrayed with distinctive characteristics, capturing their roles and personalities within the guild. Rembrandt expertly renders their varied facial features, clothing, and accessories, demonstrating his mastery in capturing human likeness and conveying individuality. The syndics are shown examining fabric samples, which symbolize their responsibility for regulating quality and standards within the textile industry.
"The Syndics" is regarded as one of Rembrandt's most celebrated works and is highly regarded for its technical brilliance and psychological depth. The painting exemplifies his ability to infuse ordinary subjects with dignity and introspection, elevating them beyond mere representation. It also reflects the artist's deep understanding of human nature, emphasizing the individuality and humanity of each syndic.
Today, "The Syndics" is housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it continues to captivate visitors with its remarkable craftsmanship and profound insight into the human condition. It stands as a testament to Rembrandt's enduring legacy as one of the greatest painters in Western art history.
This is considered an important work by Croatian artist Marijan Kocković, who served as a ship’s captain during World War II with both American and British forces and had a 45-year career as an artist. As a sculptor, he was referred to as “Marijan of Dubrovnik” and created important portraits of many leading individuals including John F. Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor.

Yesterdays photo taken at Botallack depicts the turbulent Atlantic Ocean positively battering the cliffs whereas in this capture it appears like milk spilling from a jug lol... I got far more pleasure when capturing this LE at Mother Iveys Bay though, because it was taken between lockdowns and although plenty of people on beaches a mile or so distant -because the local holiday camp of the same name we closed we had the beach to ourselves. I could relax whilst Jonathan threw a ball the opposite way to where i was taking photos which meant no paw prints in the sand and so got many different wave patterns as they broke on the beach. This was the only one that looked like this though....
The bay takes its name from the legend of Mother Ivy who was a local white witch who cursed a local family. It lies just around the coast from Harlyn Bay where you’ll find car parking and facilities (20 mins). Cushioned from the wind by the Merope Rocks, Mother Ivey’s Bay lies in a sheltered location framed by stunning coastal scenery where the soft sandy beach is ideal for both summer sandcastles and romantic winter walks.

The watercolor painting, created from a digital picture of that place, depicts a charming scene in Seville, Spain, capturing the essence of the city's lively atmosphere. The focal point of the painting is a beautiful set of three-story white facade buildings, which line a bustling street. On the street level, several restaurants with outdoor seating areas can be seen, each adorned with colorful umbrellas that provide much-needed shade from the hot Andalucian sun.
The tables are occupied by both locals and tourists, who sit leisurely enjoying their lunch while observing the hustle and bustle of the busy street. The scene is full of life, with people chatting and laughing, waiters bustling about, and the occasional bike or car passing by in the background.
The buildings themselves are beautifully depicted with intricate architectural details, including ornate wrought iron balconies and wooden shutters painted in vibrant colors. The painting has captured the warm and vibrant colors of Seville, with the golden sun casting a warm glow over the scene, while the blue sky and greenery in the background provide a refreshing contrast.
Overall, the watercolor painting perfectly captures the charm and beauty of Seville, with its stunning architecture, lively street scene, and inviting restaurants that are perfect for enjoying a leisurely meal in the shade.

The Waag ( "weigh house" ) is a15th-century building on Nieumarrkt square in Amsterdam. It was originaly a city gate and part of the walls of Amsterdam. The building has also served guildhall, museum, fire station and anatomicai theatre, among other things.
The Waag is depicted in Rembrand`s 1632 painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp.
The English duo Snik completed this piece by the Aberdeen harbour. It depicts yet one more of their iconic frozen scenes of a dynamic action, which in this a girl being dragged into the air by small birds using a piece of rope. To hold fast is to keep strong or to hold on during stormy times. A sailing term, its a nice reference to the harbour location of their mural. Although they use stencils to lay out their pieces they also free hand and add into each piece which gives their work its unique look.
Their works are so detailed and realistic that it’s hard to believe that are made with stencils.
Here are photos how artists created this wall painting:

About artists:
Artist duo Snik, aka Laura and Nik, are equally at home working in the studio or on the street. Their murals – created using traditional craft methods and layers of intricate handcut stencils – can be seen from Aberdeen to Miami and Hong Kong.
There is beauty in decay. There is beauty in places that are not perfect. And there are a lot of abandoned spaces. We want to show that these spaces still have a life to them, still have a purpose and meaning. They potentially have more years in them than people realise.
These places shouldn’t just be forgotten about. And they also shouldn’t be knocked down and redeveloped every five minutes. People can be very quick to write something off if it’s not new and shiny these days.

Happy Wall Wednesday!
Sif is traditionally depicted with long, golden hair which some scholars claim symbolizes wheat.
She is part of a divine fertility couple as Sif represents the soil of the earth and the golden bounty of the fields.
Thor, the thunder god, represents the rain that fertilizes that soil to produce crops.
As a jest, Loki the Trickster, cut Sif's golden hair, leaving her bald and heartbroken. This may represent the harvesting of the crops and the stubble left in the fields.
Thor forced Loki to replace the cut hair with golden locks.
In my picture the replacement is a crown formed of wheat heads and swirling flag leaves, which Sif wears over her regrown hair, which is once again almost ready to harvest.
The world-famous graffiti artist's OZMO latest mural in Liepāja
The mural " Siren, Wind, Sea and Freedom" emphasizes the importance of the sea in the daily life of the city, depicting it in the image of the Sea god Neptune, the seductive and captivating city, depicted in the image of a beautiful woman – a Siren, and the wind of Liepāja. In this work, too, OZMO has used his typical references to world-famous works of art. The image of Neptune is modelled from that one on the fountain of Neptune in Bologna, Italy, but the wind is symbolized by the Wind god Aiola, depicted in this shape at an ancient marble tab and used in the works of OZMO before. In turn, the woman’s head is decorated with three stars as those from the Latvian State Statue of Liberty, thus emphasizing the importance and role of Liepāja in the whole country.
“When creating my works, I always do research in advance and use different symbols. In this mural, the wind creates roaring sea waves, both united by the beautiful Latvian city – Liepāja, which is symbolized by a real-life girl, a singer seen on the social network Instagram,” says the author of the work OZMO. ” To create this more than 150 m2 large painting, it took 11 days, 217 colour cans, a tube of sunscreen, one bucket truck and many forthcoming people, who helped to implement this long-cherished idea,” says the author of the project idea, the “Red Sun Buffet Beach Bar” co-owner Mareks Alberts.
OZMO is visiting Liepāja within the project “Street Art Portraits in the Streets of Liepāja”. He began his creative career creating comics, but soon turned to writing and painting. In 2001, he entered the Florence Academy of Visual Arts in Milan, collaborating with the world’s largest art galleries. Shortly afterwards, under the nickname OZMO he became known for his impressive wall paintings. His works can be seen in Milan, London, Rome, Miami, Baltimore, Shanghai, Paris, Gdansk and many other cities around the world. More information about the artist is available here:
Typically, the lion inhabits grasslands and savannas, but is absent in dense forests. It is usually more diurnal than other wild cats, but when persecuted, it adapts to being active at night and at twilight. During the Neolithic period, the lion ranged throughout Africa, Southeast Europe, the Caucasus, and Western and South Asia, but it has been reduced to fragmented populations in sub-Saharan Africa and one population in western India. It has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996 because populations in African countries have declined by about 43% since the early 1990s. Lion populations are untenable outside designated protected areas. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are the greatest causes for concern.
One of the most widely recognised animal symbols in human culture, the lion has been extensively depicted in sculptures and paintings, on national flags, and in contemporary films and literature. Lions have been kept in menageries since the time of the Roman Empire and have been a key species sought for exhibition in zoological gardens across the world since the late 18th century. Cultural depictions of lions were prominent in Ancient Egypt, and depictions have occurred in virtually all ancient and medieval cultures in the lion's historic and current range.

This digitally painted watercolor scene depicts a picturesque street in Taormina, Italy. The focus is on charming, Mediterranean-style buildings with warm ochre and beige tones, complemented by balconies and wooden shutters. The street-level atmosphere is lively, with a restaurant and bar where people are seated, enjoying their meals under outdoor awnings.
The foreground shows pedestrians in colorful clothing, adding life and movement to the scene. On the right side, stairs lead up to a pharmacy with its arched doorway, creating a sense of depth. The background is dominated by moody, dramatic clouds that contrast with the bright and cozy architecture, emphasizing the quaint yet dynamic charm of this small Italian town.

My personal depiction, through SL, of the Greek goddess Artemis.
Artemis is the goddess of the hunt, wilderness, wild animals, the moon, and chastity. In this first picture I really tried to capture those first few aspects of the hunt and the wilderness.

The four evangelists are traditionally depicted on the sails of the dome, and their symbolic images are written below them.
The evangelists are depicted with open books, the figure of each of them is twice the size of a person.
Saint Matthew the Evangelist is on the southeast sail.
According to the fathers of the church, each of the four animals, in addition to the evangelists, expresses a style or character that is characteristic of the gospel of each of them. The image of the winged man must be assimilated by Matthew, since he begins his gospel with the human genealogy of the Savior.
Matthew the Apostle, also known as Saint Matthew and possibly as Levi, was, according to the New Testament, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. According to Christian traditions, he was also one of the four Evangelists as author of the Gospel of Matthew, and thus is also known as Matthew the Evangelist, a claim rejected by most biblical scholars, though the "traditional authorship still has its defenders."
It’s a serene evening in the Vesterbro Apartment, where sleek industrial fixtures meet lush greenery, evoking the perfect depiction of an industrial jungle haven. The air is a delightful mix of new upholstery, tea, smoke, and fresh leaves. The vibe is casual yet eclectic, a perfect blend of modern city life and tropical escape.
In the midst of it all, a Siamese kitty dramatically paws at a map, clearly eager to share tales of its many adventures while another waits patiently on the couch for you. It’s the perfect time to unwind with a glass of wine or tea, sink into the sofa, and listen to a record or two while snuggling with your feline travel guide.

Depicted in this scene are some of my most favorite creations of Nature: Brilliant light, a deep blue sky showing no beginning nor end, puffy white clouds with a few threatening gray ones keeping things interesting, and a mountain lake reflecting its own version of the same scene right back to me.
I truly feel at home in a setting like this. This is "heaven" to me.
A beautiful depiction of Ganesha, remover of obstacles and the lord of new beginnings.
I have mixed feelings about seeing deities and Buddhas in commercial settings such as a garden centres, alongside garden gnomes, dragons and flowerpot people.
But looking beyond to when these figures are in people's homes and gardens and giving them pleasure and maybe inspiring peaceful contemplation and then my mood changes to something more open to compassion.
Love, Light and abiding Peace to all sentient beings.
The Capitoline Wolf is a bronze sculpture depicting a scene from the legend of the founding of Rome. The sculpture shows a she-wolf suckling the mythical twin founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. According to the legend, when King Numitor, grandfather of the twins, was overthrown by his brother Amulius in Alba Longa, the usurper ordered them to be cast into the Tiber River. They were rescued by a she-wolf that cared for them until a herdsman, Faustulus, found and raised them.
The age and origin of the Capitoline Wolf are controversial. The statue was long thought to be an Etruscan work of the fifth century BC, with the twins added in the late 15th century AD, probably by sculptor Antonio del Pollaiuolo. However, radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dating in the 21st century has suggested that the wolf portion of the statue may have been cast between 1021 and 1153, though the results are inconsistent, and there is yet no consensus for a revised dating. In a conference on this theme, most academics continued to support an ancient Etruscan origin.[citation needed] An analysis of the metal suggests that it contains lead from a source not known to have operated during medieval times.
The image of the she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus has been a symbol of Rome since ancient times, and one of the most recognizable icons of ancient mythology.[5] The sculpture has been housed since 1471 in the Palazzo dei Conservatori on the Campidoglio (the ancient Capitoline Hill), Rome, Italy, and many replicas are in various places around the world.
It depicts Christ's last joint Easter meal with his disciples on the eve of his arrest and crucifixion. During the meal, Christ instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist, gave parting instructions, predicted renunciation Peter and the betrayal of Judas (Mt. 26:17-29; Mk. 14:12-25; Lk. 22:7-38; In. 13:1 - 17:26).
After the words of Jesus: "One of you will betray Me", the disciples began to look at each other, not understanding who He was talking about. Each of them asks, "Am I not?" To Judas, Christ gives an affirmative answer: "You said," to the rest he answers with a hint: "He who dipped his hand in salt with Me."

This picture depicts the moated castle "Haus Kemnade" in Blankenstein, a borough of Hattingen. The castle is a rebuild in the art of Renaissance and Baroque after a conflagration in 1589. Since 1921 is the castel in the ownership of the city of Bochum. Today is "Haus Kemnade" a dynamic hub for gastronomy and excursions alongside the Ruhr-valley.
The image depicts a narrow alleyway lined with traditional stone houses. The houses have bright green shutters that stand out against the warm, tan-colored stone. The alleyway is bathed in sunlight, casting a golden glow on the scene. The houses have red tile roofs and you can see some plants growing on the balconies. The atmosphere seems peaceful and charming, typical of a small village on the island of Mallorca on a beautiful sunny day.

A brick-built bust depicting a classic styled Joker. Includes signed display stand by the builder.
I've yet to sell anything this year for Creations for Charity, and so I decided to put something up that I'm sure would sell. Granted, I totally understand the niche appeal of my Hall of Justice, so I guess this more marketable thingy will have to do--at least until I get my 2015 brick badge for participating! Oh...and to help get Lego for children, that too.
Incidentally, I was working on this Joker design (the head at least) for a different creation that should be up in the next few weeks--so just act like you've never seen if before when it shows up again. ;)
This is also my first creation/image that uses my new softbox lights (that just arrived today). It should take some work, because I know nothing of how light as a concept works, but my creations should look far better now. Just need a camera and editing software. One down, two to go!
Depicting the view from the Tokyo Skytree Tower.
Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Skytree:
Tokyo Skytree (東京スカイツリー, Tōkyō Sukaitsurī) is a broadcasting and observation tower in Sumida, Tokyo. It became the tallest tower in Japan in 2010 and reached its full height of 634 meters (2,080 ft) in March 2011, making it the tallest tower in the world, displacing the Canton Tower, and the third tallest structure in the world after Merdeka 118 (678.9 m or 2,227 ft) and the Burj Khalifa (829.8 m or 2,722 ft). It is the tallest freestanding tower in the OECD, the G20 and G7 countries.
The tower is the primary television and radio broadcast site for the Kantō region; the older Tokyo Tower no longer gives complete digital terrestrial television broadcasting coverage because it is surrounded by high-rise buildings. Skytree was completed on Leap Day, 29 February 2012, with the tower opening to the public on 22 May 2012. The tower is the centrepiece of a large commercial development funded by Tobu Railway (which owns the complex) and a group of six terrestrial broadcasters headed by NHK. Trains stop at the adjacent Tokyo Skytree Station and nearby Oshiage Station. The complex is seven kilometres (4.3 miles) northeast of Tokyo Station. Sumida Aquarium is in the Tokyo Solamachi complex.
Design
The tower's design was published on 24 November 2006, based on the following three concepts:
Fusion of neofuturistic design and the traditional beauty of Japan
Catalyst for revitalization of the city
Contribution to disaster prevention – "Safety and Security"
The base of the tower has a structure similar to a tripod; from a height of about 350 m (1,150 ft) and above, the tower's structure is cylindrical to offer panoramic views of the river and the city. There are observatories at 350 m (1,150 ft), with a capacity of up to 2,000 people, and 450 m (1,480 ft), with a capacity of 900 people. The upper observatory features a spiral, glass-covered skywalk in which visitors ascend the last 5 metres to the highest point at the upper platform. A section of glass flooring gives visitors a direct downward view of the streets below.
The porcelain button depicts a Cattelya orchid. It was made by the Toshikane Company in Japan, probably in the 1950s to early 1960s, and it's unused. Behind it is a miniature coffee pot and mug (there are 2 in the set) made by Wedgwood, which I was lucky enough to spot in the window of a local charity shop. This one's a bit different for me. I don't usually do black. :)

The Royal Grand Palace is a complex of buildings at the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. The palace has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam and later Thailand since 1782. It consists of not only royal and throne halls, but also a number of government offices as well as the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It covers an area of 218,000 square metres and is surrounded by four walls, 1900 metres in length. After King Rama I ascended to the throne in 1782, the palace was built. Prior to this, the royal palace and centre of administration had been located in Thonburi, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. For various reasons, the new King considered the former capital to be unsuitable and decided to establish a new capital on the other side of the river. Admission fee is free of charge for Thais and 500 baht for foreigners. You'll need to wear culturally appropriate attire when visiting the Grand Palace in Bangkok. This means being well covered. Visitors should wear long skirts/trousers and sleeved shirts—basically anything that covers more than the lower arms and head. Fortunately, after the covid period, it is not yet busy with tourists. Thailand has just ended their quarantine policy. Face masks are no longer mandatory. Great to visit the Grand Palace one more time now.
Impressive 200 years of royal history and architecture at the Grand Palace in Bangkok with more than 100 buildings. The gallery walls of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha enclose the entire temple and are completely covered with murals. The gallery is a covered corridor that surrounds the entire temple like a monastery. Murals on the gallery walls depict the entire arc of the Ramakien epic, which is based on the Indian Ramayana. This version was translated and recomposed in Thai poetic form around 1797 under the supervision of Rama I himself. The murals were commissioned by Rama I to tell his version of the epic. The concept of righteous kingship within the epic has long been recognized in Southeast Asia and has been appropriated by many kings to equate their land with the legendary city of Ayodhya - holy place for Hindus- and the hero Rama. The murals have been restored over time. The murals along the walls are divided into 178 scenes. The first scene depicted is: the initial stages of the war waged by Rama of Ayodthaya to rescue his wife who had been abducted by King of Longka.
This photograph depicts a very festive woman's feet while she sat in a chair getting her hair done up in a beehive to celebrate the Hon Fest in Baltimore where you feel like you're walking around the set of Hairspray. My Dad and I met up with our good friend Toshio, who recommended we visit the Hon Fest in Baltimore - I'm so glad he recommended it since we had a great time!
