A view looking south on 5th St. toward Washington St. and the west side of the Old State Capitol Plaza. All of the buildings in this view lie within the Central Springfield Historic District that was listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1978. The boundaries of the district were expanded in 1986 and 2015.

Of particular note in this view is the Stuart Broadwell Building on the northwest corner of 5th and Washington (far right), and the Myers Brothers Building on the southwest corner of the intersection.

The Beaux Arts style Stuart Broadwell Building was built in 1917 for Broadwell's Drug Store and remained a drug store until 1981. Since then the building has been home to a variety of retail establishments on the ground floor, and professional offices on the second and third floors.

Opposite the Broadwell Building is the Myers Brothers Building, which once served as the flagship of the Myers Brother Brothers Department Store. Completed in 1925, the building was designed by Alfred S. Alshuler, a prominent Chicago architect of the period whose work includes the landmark London Guarantee Building in downtown Chicago.

The Myers' remained involved in the business until 1978, when the Myers Brothers stores were sold to the Bergner's department store chain. By 1983, the Myers Brothers name had been replaced by Bergner's, and in 1989 the flagship store in downtown Springfield was closed. Since then the building has been in use as commercial office space.

Still the most beautiful department store.

A view looking northwest on Edwards St. toward 3rd St. in Henry's business district. Earlier in this series we looked at the building across 3rd St. on the left. The large three story building across 3rd St. on the right also worth noting. Known as the Watercott's Building, it was once the home of The Watercott Store, a locally important department store founded in Henry in 1877.

Henry is a city in Marshall County, Illinois. The population of Henry was 2,320 at the 2020 census. The city is considered part of the Peoria Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its slogan, "Best Town in Illinois by a Dam Site," is derived from the city's distinction of having the first lock and dam built on the Illinois River.

Long exposure photography can create dynamic, and sometimes, surreal images full of motion. Whether there is a sense of tranquility, apprehension with regard to the unexpected, or an element of surprise, night images can also evoke a true sense of emotion.

Photographers who specialize in night photography are indeed a special breed. This should not be so surprising when one realizes how much in-depth understanding of light is necessary to capture that perfect photograph. Additionally, there are some rather basic tips any newbie night photographer should know. This, and more, will be covered in this edition of “After Hours Photography,” with a few night photography exercises tossed in to allow you to practice that which is covered. After all, practice - and I do mean a lot of it - will enable you to create magical night imagery!

First thing first, and that is - Know Your Camera! Whether shooting landscapes, or urban settings, trundle through the darkness not only looking for the perfect scene, but experimenting along the way. A thorough understanding of your camera, and what all of the buttons do, is essential for night photography. The last thing you will want, with little light with which to work, is to fumble with your camera and its controls. Not knowing can only make for stressful, difficult photography.

** Take a moment, and have a look at your camera controls. Pay close attention to the Mode Dial. This is where you will set how you will photograph.

A view of the recently rehabilitated Broadgauge building in downtown Petersburg that sits catty-corner from the Menard County Courthouse on the northwest side of square. The Broadgauge lies within the Petersburg Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Constructed in 1872, the Broadgauge was built as central Illinois' original "mega store," containing under one roof hardware, grocery and dry goods stores. The following is excerpted from the Broadgauge website: According to local poet Edgar Lee Masters (Spoon River Anthology), "John Brahm had built the stone faced bank on the corner with its marble columns, and the large store on the corner, always called the “broad-gauge”, and a very fine store it was, finished inside in walnut, with counters of walnut, and shelves back of them on which were goods not surpassed in quality and variety in the stores of Springfield."

Over the past 150 years, the Broadgauge has been home to a variety of retail and office businesses. Under new ownership the building has recently been redeveloped into a restaurant, bar, coffee shop, and event center.

The Witt Building, located on the southwest corner of Walnut and Taylor St. in downtown Champaign, was constructed in 1909. Originally occupied by C.F. Witt's harness and carriage business. Mr. Witt died in 1913. Two years laters, on March 26, 1915, the W. Lewis Department Store relocated to the Witt Building, just nine days after a terrible downtown blaze destroyed several buildings in the business district, including the one occupied by Lewis.

In the early 1920s T.M. Bacon and Son which, a glass company, moved into the building. By the 1930s the business became the known as the Bacon van Buskirk Glass Company which remains in business today.

In 1951, the building was sold to Lester Brown whose business, Brown's Paint & Glass, operated from the building until 1994. The building was sold and, after remodeling, reopened in 1996 as Radio Maria, a very popular Champaign/Urbana restaurant and tapas bar which closed a few years ago.

The Witt Building is a contributing property in the Champaign Downtown Commercial District listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. Located in Champaign County in east central Illinois, the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana are the home of the University of Illinois. The population of the City of Champaign at the 2020 census was 88,302, while Champaign County had a population of 205,865.

San Jose's Big Department Store. 1866 - 1968.

Completed in 1915, this large commercial office building at the intersection of S. Water and E. Main streets was originally known as the Powers Building. The ground floor was home to the popular Linn and Scruggs Department Store, with professional offices on the upper floors.

The building is divided into a base, shaft and capital typical of the Chicago Commercial style. Each section is separated by a string course. Verticality is emphasized by paired stacked windows, and each column of windows is topped with a decorative brick arch in the cornice.

In 1920, the building was sold to the Standard Life Company for $700,000, who occupied the top floor while continuing to rent the office and commercial space below. The Standard Life Building is considered the structure's historic name. In 1934, the building's name was changed to the Standard Office Building. The structure's current name, Millikin Court Building, dates back to 1969 when the former Millikin National Bank became its primary tenant.

The Millikin Court Building was redeveloped by developer Tony Romano about 10 years ago. Primary occupants today are First Mid-Illinois Bank, Sikich LLP, and Romano Co. The Standard Life (now Millikin Court) Building is a significant architectural and historical property in the Decatur Downtown Historic District. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1985.

Decatur is the seat of Macon County. The city was founded in 1829 and is situated along the Sangamon River and Lake Decatur in central Illinois. Decatur has an economy based on industrial and agricultural commodity processing and production. The city is home of private Millikin University and public Richland Community College.

Decatur's estimated population for 2019 was 70,746, making Decatur the thirteenth-most populous city in Illinois, and the state's sixth-most populous city outside the Chicago metropolitan area.
