Light painting workshop in the celllars of St Hallet winery in Barossa valley run by Diamonds Cameras & Denis Smith who creates the devices to make the light painting and is passionate in teaching how to use them.
Decided to go over to the University of Hohenheim for some blue hour shots since they are celebrating their 200 year anniversary this year While I was there, I happened to find this ball off light dancing around the man hole cover in front of the main structure at the University...... Actually I was out practicing with a tool I picked up from a light painting artist out of Australia called the Ball of Light. Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. :-)

Waving a Denis Smith made lightflute CH48 across the hidden bridge in Banks Street Reserve, Brisbane.
Cool white Convoy S2+ as the light source. Red cellophane was placed in the Universal Connector, which created a peachy / orange colour (though it appeared pink to my eyes).
Nitecore NU20 CRI headlamp used for light wash and starburst. Neutral and warm white Convoy S2+ illuminating underneath the bridge.
Post processed from single RAW exposure in Adobe Lightroom 6.
I was literally sheltering here from the rain. Just to the right, out of frame, are the very famous 12 Apostles here in Australia. I got heaps of incredible image of them this night, but this image was easily my favourite and has ended up being one of my all time favs.
Peace, Denis
It’s been way too long since I’ve hung out with the Ball of Light. Had a great night out. These days it takes a bit more energy to drive for a few hours, carry gear and run around like a goose. But damn it feels good.
This is a single exposure, moon rising, stars fading.
Peace, Denis.
A very late upload for yesterday as I didn't get back until 2.30 this morning! I met up with a dozen other folk at Magpie Mine in the Peak District who were all booked in on a light painting workshop due to be hosted by Denis Smith this week. Unfortunately due to issues with immigration after flying all the way here from Australia he was turned away at Heathrow and put on the next flight back home. We decided that this event should go ahead anyway in his honour and we found ourselves basking in moonlight in what can only be described as perfect light painting conditions!
The stars have been in our skies for billions of years. This is a single file from the camera. Live composite on the Olympus. I spun the orb then left the camera there soaking up the light for ages. So much fun!
Peace, Denis
The new journey begins....
Been AGES since I headed out to make new light painting work on my own, and for myself. My favourite form of therapy!
Managed to squeeze in a couple of hours of LP in the blackout studio today and learned so much about so many new tools. I’m so excited!

Hi Flickr legends. Here’s a Ball of Light and a sunset for you. I am starting to realise just how much work I haven’t uploaded to Flickr. It’s a bit exciting really.
The nice thing about Flickr is you automatically see the Exif data. And know this is a single exposure.
Peace, Denis
So I’m trying to light paint this awesome little tree, and these star things are all over the show. A little distracting I know. Pesky stars.
This is a single exposure. Adjusted in LR.
Yay
I have a good mate who is a classical composer/producer. I am so lucky that I can just ask to pop over for a cuppa, and test a new idea. These are both lit by hand, which means I have a small light, in this case a purpose made scanner, and move the light over/around the subject. I made a little BTS vid which is coming soon. Have a magical day. www.denissmith.com.au
The position of the moon here is pure luck, I’m using the intervalometer to get these. Hooked into a bit of fire in the salt. It plays so be with the salt.

This is a tool made 100% of glass. There was something wild about taking glass into water to make light.
Peace, Denis
This is a VERY DODGY hand stitched pano I made to show how the foreground is lit by two small panels on minimum power!. So many “astro” photographers create all sorts of compositions. Which is cool, but I love, I mean I love getting it all in camera. This is from a series of images I’m making for an upcoming video. This was a quick and dirty night away to reset. This location is 5 hours from my house, there is no excuse.
New website coming soon! With so much cool stuff. Yay.
Peace, Denis.

An image is more then just pixels in two dimensions. There is time, not just the seconds the shutter is open, but the plans, travel, scoping etc. but some images, like this one, just happen, by intuition, by feel. It was a night of wonder and magic.

Feels nice to be back here on Flickr. I’ve been looking around after loosing fb and IG, and this is the one. Peace, Denis.
I've just booked myself on to a light painting workshop which is being run by Denis who first inspired me to get into light painting so I thought I'd better start brushing up on my technique. Lets start with a close up of the details of a classic orb, not my usual colour but it works for a close up.
One of the biggest challenges choosing to come back to Flickr is updating the feed. There are literally hundreds to post. I’ll just take my time.
At@least you get to see them properly. Facebook fuc$ed with our shit.
Peace. Denis.
Last night I was out watching the "Blue Moon" (second full moon in one month) and spotted the Ball of Light in one of its old haunts, under the Grange Jetty.
The amazing thing was that it was sinking into the sand! It must have been waiting all night like me to see the Blue Moon set.
It was an absolutely stunning night. About an hour after this sighting the moon turned deep deep red, and turned the see the same colour. Stunning. Then the sun came up about an hour later.

Confusion normally greets these images. But I am in the water waving a light painting tool while the camera is capturing the exposure. This is a single exposure, zero compositing or manipulation. That’s the joy of Light Painting.

This image is taken at a very well used path. Getting the camera down low gives the illusion it is not. Play with angles. Play. A lot.

I just happened to be hanging out at the Grange Jetty in Adelaide one morning at about 5am. The moon was setting, and gave off this crazy sun like glow, it was utter madness.
Next thing the always awesome orange Ball of Light appears. I think it thought the moon was a distant relative, obviously not a liked one because it was hiding under the jetty.
Nice to see it was still in a reflective mood!
One day to go till the holiday, YEAH !

(There is no photoshop manipulation of this image at all. It is taken in a single exposure. Only adjustments are to level, brightness sat etc)
I remember the first time I discovered the live composite function in Olympus cameras. It entranced me, mainly because it allowed this, long exposures in really bright environments. It comes in handy on occasions.
Peace, Denis
I challenged myself to get out under a new moon and shoot some Astro with Light Painting. This was in response to the comment that Micro 4/3 sensors would struggle to capture astro.
I reckon it handled is pretty well.

The last in a set of four light painting photos taken along Brisbane's Kangaroo Point.
In this photo, I was waving around the excellent Denis Smith made lightflute CH48, whilst trying not to fall off the rocks into the Brisbane River. Light trails from a passing CityCat add to the scene.
Photographed on a moonlit night, at high tide. Post processed from single RAW exposure in Adobe Lightroom 6.
THE BALL OF LIGHT MOVIE IS HERE! : www.denissmith.com.au/about/ball-of-light-movie/
The moon was so insanely bright tonight, I just had to make the most of the beach. It felt like the moon rose perfectly above me, then stayed still for ages.
It was nice and still, and for once there were no ships on the horizon. I love reflections so much, and tonight the Ball of Light did not disapoint. And I had so much fun.
I hope you all had a nice Full Moon weekend, and have a safe easter!
(The only adjustments to this image are minor brightness and saturation tweaks. NO PIXELS ARE ADDED OR REMOVED. It is taken in a SINGLE EXPOSURE, with no use of "mechanical devices".
8 spinners. Participants in a recent workshop show off their "Ball of Light" skills in the Flinders Ranges.
Just finished this rig today. You light painters might recognise it as a kaleidoscope setup. But this has a few little tricks. It’s gonna be my first tutorial for 2023, yay! If you have spent any serious time playing with a similar setup, you will see something unusual about this one.
Have a beautiful New Year’s Eve!
FOR A BIT OF FUN CHECK OUT THE BALL OF LIGHT MOVIE : www.denissmith.com.au/about/ball-of-light-movie/
How amazing was this place. I still have so so many photos I haven't really looked at yet. I must go back to this place one night.
I am in Sydney this week and met with some people that had never seen the Ball of LIght before. I was scrolling through a bunch of "historic" images on the iPad, and was kind of blown away by just how long it has been, and the volume of work getting to this point.
This image which was taken on the same morning as "distantly Related" popped up, and made me feel butterflies on my stomach.
I took this image in December 2009. With a Canon 450d using an 18-200 kit lens. The moon you see about to lunge below the horizon is a blue moon, which is the second full moon in a calendar month. it is about 5am, and I felt like my whole world was perfect!
Classic. And it makes me feel a level of respect for the Ball of Light, and what it brings and symbolises in my life. Change, warmth, balance and a certain degree of love.
It also makes me feel excitement as to where I have come with my photography, and the huge amount of wonderful people who i share this wonderful journey with online. What a community of folks. What an amazing, developing and growing bunch of innovators!
Bring on Cambodia!
Peace
It has been a while! There has been a chat going on over on IG and FB about whether value still exists here on Flickr? God I miss it. www.denissmith.com.au

This one was lit from the left by Chris Thompson with his led lenser x21r.2, flashed from the inside for the windows and a first for me lit from above with a lume cube attached to my DJI Phantom 4. Orb spun by me.
Awesome night was had by all!
If I was to delineate the various phases of my artistic practice, I am currently in transition. Although this series of images I’ve just posted are very similar to pieces I’ve made before, they are incredibly different. Because only a handful of people will ever see them, compared to the last 10 years. The intent as I was making them, the headspace I was in and the fact that I give zero fucks if anyone likes them. It was for me. Sharing work here on Flickr is so nice, this is where it all began. Waaaaay back. Thanks for still being here. Peace, Denis. www.denissmith.com.au
Whilst heading back home after taking photos in Brisbane City Botanic Gardens, I couldn't resist adding a touch of light painting to this cannon. Getting the right angle was somewhat tricky due to the surrounding lighting, as was getting the explosion effect to look half-decent.
Explosion effect using Denis Smith made lightflute CH48, attached to a warm white Convoy S2+ on 20Hz strobe.
Post processed from single RAW exposure in Adobe Lightroom 6.

Light painting photography is rapidly growing as an art form. Although it can appear outwardly complex, it can be a simple and rewarding way to expand your photography portfolio and interest.
This Ball of Light image is taken in a single exposure next to the Peter Iredale Shipwreck, located near Fort Stevens just west of Astoria, Oregon. The shipwreck is just bare bones now, but it was once a 275-foot-long, four-masted steel barque sailing vessel out of Liverpool, England.
In this image, I am simply swinging a light around in a circle whilst rotating. There is no magic, simply experimenting with camera settings and light sources. Not one pixel is added or removed from the image. The only adjustments made are minor saturation and brightness tweaks. There is no blending of images or use of any software than Lightroom.
Inspired by the master of light painting, Denis Smith of Adelaide, South Australia and the School of Light.
This is captured at the Remarkable Rocks on Kangaroo Island. It was a damp and moody night. My favourite type of night.
Peace, Denis
