Het spoorwegstation Rotterdam Stadion - geopend in 1937 - wordt normaliter alleen gebruikt bij voetbalwedstrijden en evenementen in De Kuip. In het weekend van 24-25 juni 2023 eindigden hier echter de reguliere treinen uit het zuiden in verband met werkzaamheden te Rotterdam Centraal. Nu de toegangshekken geopend waren was dit een mooie gelegenheid hier de infra vast te leggen.
Zeer klassiek (en vermoedelljk uniek) is de treinaanwijzer met de verlichte neonletters van de sporen 'SP 3A', 'SP 4A’ en bestemming 'Dordrecht'. De bediening hiervan gebeurt vanuit het duiventil-achtige verblijf op de loopbrug. Overdag brandden meerdere bestemmingen naar het zuiden maar ik was blij dat bij zonsondergang niet alles al uitgeschakeld was.
The Dutch railway station Rotterdam Stadion is normally only used during football matches and events at the nearby stadium. However, on the weekend of 24-25 June 2023, trains from the south ended here due to works at Rotterdam Central. This was a great opportunity to capture the infrastructure here for a change.
Very classic (and presumably unique) is the surviving train indicator with the illuminated neon letters of the tracks 'SP 3A', 'SP 4A' and destination 'Dordrecht'. During the day, several other destinations to the south were manually lit but I was glad that by sunset not everything was already switched off.

Shot at the ‘Timmerhuis’, at the bottom layer (floors 1 to 5) of this OMA designed building (Rem Koolhaas, Reinier de Graaf. Interior design: Saskia Simon, Katrien van Dijk).
This level is used by the municipality of Rotterdam (22.000 square meters, max capacity of 1800 of civil servants) and the Museum Rotterdam.
Grandmaster Rem isn’t well known for his keen sense of humour, but the team of interior designers (led by Saskia Simon and Katrien van Dijk) seems to be a little different., when one considers ’the elephant in the room’ here. and this pic too, captured in one of the bigger meeting rooms of the Timmerhuis, with a picture-carpet of the Feijenoord soccer stadium (De Kuip) in full swing.
This decoration seems to illustrate the saying that collective decision making is an arena (the 'policy arena'). With players, rules and ‘supporters’, cheering the proceedings on. A more ironic reading of the decoration is that it might be a referral to the 'bread and circuses' adagio, stating that the masses can be pacified by the administrative elite by offering them 'bread and circuses' ;-)

In Amsterdam is het mogelijk om een deel van de ArenA, thuisbasis van Ajax, in combinatie met een trein vast te kunnen leggen. Ook bij de Rotterdamse Kuip, thuisbasis van Feyenoord, is dit mogelijk, al is het wel minder fotogeniek dan in Mokum. Toch werd op de middag van donderdag 19 maart een poging gedaan om een goederentrein op deze ietwat alternatieve stek vast te kunnen leggen. Hoewel ik al eerder op deze stek had gestaan was het nog niet gelukt om een plaatje van een DBC 1600 met de staaltrein naar Beverwijk te fotograferen. Jammer genoeg begon de bewolking op de achtergrond te breken, maar gelukkig was de beoogde trein mooi optijd. En zo zien we DBC locomotief 1616 met een lange rij zeildoekwagens als trein 61261 (Kfh-Bv) de fotograaf passeren richting Tatasteel in Beverwijk. Vanwege het naderende afscheid van de 1600en bij DB Cargo zijn de drie nog resterende locomotieven (1611, 1615 & 1616) voorzien van de teksten ‘Elke dag wat dichterbij, na 39 jaar trouwedienst is het dan voorbij’ & ‘Na reeds vele kilometers rijdt ik nu echt de laatste meters’ en hebben ze een flinke wasbeurt gekregen. Overigens waren op deze middag de eerste maatregelen van het Coronavirus al zichtbaar op het spoor, want de Eurostar en Thalys treinen reden niet of veel minder.

Feyenoord legend Wim Jansen passed away today at the age of 75.
As a player he won the Europa Cup 1 (now Champions League) in 1970, the Intercontinental Cup (now World Cup for clubs) in 1970, UEFA Cup (now Europa League) in 1974 and the national title multiple times around the same period. Two World Cup finals in '74 (West-Germany) and '78 (Argentina).
I haven't seen him play live, that was before my time, but I have seen him as a coach. At the end of the 80's, beginning of the 90's Feyenoord was is really bad shape. They were on the edge of bankruptcy and my dad took us took the stadium and we lost almost every game. Some 10.000 spectators, a big almost empty stadium. I can remember one game against Fortuna, we were behind 0-2 and the fans stormed the field. Individually decent players but they didn't function as a team, there was zero confidence.
Halfway the '90-'91 season we were at the bottom of the table and the humble Wim Jansen took over as the manager. The team became more balanced, didn't concede a lot of goals and confidence grew game-by-game and started winning. They managed to win the cup and that changed everything. In that period Wim Jansen saved the club from going belly up.

Hi folks, I needed to have a new autumn shot of 'The Park' including the panoramic view of Rotterdam, but it was not the sunset I really hoped for, while the WHOLE DAY had been nothing short of amazing. As soon as I got up and out of that elevator all the clouds were mostly gone. The pinkies are not too bad though... I guess.
But you know: I'll be back. ;-)

When I was a kid, my dad took my brother and me to the stadium to watch Feyenoord for many years. This was in the 80s-90s. This was is the old stadium, de oude Kuip, with the brown seats. Feyenoord wasn't doing so well at that time. No money, little talent and 10-15.000 spectators in each game. You could park your car next to the stadium, in the mud, for free.
But I loved that my dad took us there. We got the love for the game there and then. Today my dad and me went to the game again. I loved it. These are good times.
No Van Persie (injured) but 3-0 against Heerenveen. Two goals cancelled by the VAR. Goals by Jörgensen, Berghuis and Tonny Vilhena.

Door de vrieskou is de lucht helder en kun je ook in de stad genieten van wijdse uitzichten. We kijken over de huizen van Katendrecht heen en zien een driewagencombinatie van de Rotterdamse metro op weg tussen de stations Maashaven en Rijnhaven. Er is nog net een glimp van het water van de Maashaven te zien. Op de achtergrond domineert De Kuip, het stadion van Feijenoord, de skyline van de stad.

The Ropera choir performing during Feijenoord de Opera. The combination of soccer and opera was highly enjoyable and the functionalist archi setting of De Kuip (Brinkman & vander Vlught 1936) made it extra special. The steel skeleton is clearly in view. And the coloured light filtering through the tainted glass facade (Cor Kraat, 1975) too.

It's an opera production that took place last summer. Ah, but but what has soccer to do with opera? Well, both the roots are working class but soon the social practices and audiences diverged.
The Rotterdam Wijktheater and the Walhalla theater brought them together again. And they did this in a clever way. Classic opera tunes from Aïda, Norma, Carmen, Don Giovanni, Orpheus & Euredice, Die Mutter, the Barber of Seville, Il travatore & Nabucco got new Dutch lyrics ….they formed a classic Rotterdam soccer narration about a boy called Robin. The narration loosely follows the first soccer years of former Fijenoord player Robin van Persie. The plot is helped along by two inter-spaced mini stageplays. The second bridging device is the orchestra - the accordion orchestra of the 'Zusjes van Wanrooy'. Together with the program booklet with the lyrics included it stimulated / enabled the public to sing a long, in the best tradition of participatory and community / empowerment theater- the core business of the Rotterdam Wijktheater.

"Alle scènes en operateksten zijn gebaseerd op verhalen van supporters en aangevuld met persoonlijke verhalen van Bob van Persie (de vader van Robin van Persie), Gerard Cox, oud-Feyenoord verzorger Gerard Meijer, oud-Feyenoorder Gaston Taument en bestuursleden. Aan deze locatievoorstelling werken nog meer bekenden mee, zoals Paul de Munnik, Vincent Bijlo, Anna Enquist, Keimpe de Jong en Arie van der Krogt.

Tiny story update July 2012
I got an e-mail a couple of weeks ago from a father who wanted to help his 10 year old son to turn his room into a football room. Both are supporting the biggest club of Rotterdam: Feyenoord. So they were looking for a nice picture of De Kuip - the home stadium of Feyenoord - to cover one huge wall of the room (2,65 m x 2,15m) with it.
They found my shot of De Kuip (the one above), and asked me if they could use it to produce the wallpaper. I was glad to help out and donated the file in the exact format and resolution to get the best result. Tonight I received an e-mail with a thank you and some pics (see comment box)... made me happy! :)

Terwijl twee voetbaltreinen mat '46 en mat '64 staan te wachten op de afloop van de wedstrijd in de Kuip en er passeert een stoptrein naar Rotterdam CS over de hoofdbaan.
Rotterdam 15-05-1991. There was a match between an English and a Spanish soccer team but I can't remember their names. The letters MUFC behind the window of one of the coaches sort of give the game away though... The coaches came away as far as London.

Toch werd op de middag van dinsdag 26 november een poging gedaan om naar aanleiding van deze foto: www.flickr.com/photos/gewoonsanderrr/16475509338/in/album..., een goederentrein op deze ietwat alternatieve stek vast te kunnen leggen. Men heeft daarvoor nodig: volledige bewolking, een beetje geluk en natuurlijk een goederentrein. Op mijn lijstje stonden de aluminiumoxidetrein naar Ziar nad Hronom te Slowakije en de vaste goederentrein van de Kijfhoek naar Beverwijk beide van DB Cargo. Uiteraard werd ook het overige treinverkeer ‘meegepakt’. De eerste goederentrein was keurig optijd en onder rugnummer 46605 (Bot-Bh) passeert DBC locomotief 189 028 met de lege Aluminiumoxidetrein richting het oosten van Europa, voor vele ‘Het’ stadion van Rotterdam/Nederland. De 2e goederentrein was helaas een halfuur te laat en reed ook nog eens in slecht licht (lees regen), dus dat moet nog eens over gedaan worden. Een leuke goederentrein van een private vervoerder zal het hier naar mijn bescheiden mening ook wel goed doen. Afijn genoeg gepraat, en zoals men in Rotterdam altijd zegt: geen woorden - maar daden, en deze uitspraak was voormij die dag ook van toepassing, want na een ruime twee uur hier te hebben doorgebracht werd het tijd om naar Rotterdam Centraal te rijden, want er moest nog gewerkt worden. Met andere woorden: Aan de arbeid dan maar!
