On the 1st of June, we organized a social media training for students in Yei, South Sudan. This training brought together four schools, three secondary schools and one higher learning institution.
The training covered extensively on the topic of social media and hate speech mitigation - the response and energy from Yei was so awesome. We are looking for more engagement with the people of Yei this month.
June 14th 2017: “An evening with #defyhatenow# South Sudanese Diaspora Talks, Hub East Africa, Nairobi Kenya
Our first activity on how to make use of time offline and online. In small groups, Students listed out what they mainly use their time on and both parties male and female listed out their activities. Interestingly, every group mentioned Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, twitter most common platforms to post, share comment and get the latest gossips...Social medias being platforms for inciting violence, propagating hatespeech, and spreading propaganda and discriminative messages or posts on a particular group, this led to concerns about posts concerning a specific a group and the discussion further raised questions on how safe is the internet or this platforms for use? What measures or precautions need to be put in place to safe guard the masses? Most females raised the concern on how some posts or comments including websites that portray women in a very negative way in South Sudan #Defyhatenow

#defyhatenow social media one day forum in Bor, Jonglei State concluded with Key highlights on the significance of information verification, hate speech mitigation.
The forum also shared the Social Media Hate Speech Mitigation Field Guide with participants, a tool on how to use, combate off and online hate speech.
