one of my bestest friends of all time, is arriving tomorrow for my birthday weekend. in the middle of my chores today, i decided to run down to the corner market for something to drink. didn't bring my phone, just my keys and my camera. i hesitated with the latter though, thought to myself: "it's only a block and a half and i've walked it a million times, there's nothing interesting between here and there." the thought continued however, with: "oh clementine you only have 2 days left of this project, bring your f'ing camera!"
heh.
as i was standing at the counter, three gunshots rang out. the clerk looked up at me,
"uh oh."
"yeah," i replied.
i walked outside and stood on the corner. the intersection was abuzz with energy. police swarming. maybe 30, 40 different vehicles. undercovers. beat officers. seemed to be every cop within a 7x7 radius. turned out there was a funeral a block down, that had just let out. a funeral for a 'hood cat nicknamed Buddy. Buddy was killed last week.
just as i started rubbernecking, the crowd of mourners chased (one of?) the suspect(s) into a residential complex across the street from the church. more cops continued to arrive on the scene. they secured the entire block, surrounding the gates of the apartment buildings. it was intense. i stood there with my camera in my hand. my fiddy was on, and it's been having a lot of focusing issues lately, so to get a decent shot of the action i needed to move locations. i didn't budge. i took a few shots from afar. i could have easily just walked up the block a bit and gotten a much better vantage point of the police cuffing and taking multiple young men away. i stood still.
one of the guys they arrested, they walked down the middle of the street. for all the mourners and on-lookers to see clearly. i was struck by that. and i didn't take his picture. just because it didn't seem right. i have no idea who he was or what his involvement had been.
after chatting with a little old lady for a few minutes, a kid leaning up against the building behind me called out,
"hey pretty lady, take my picture."
i turned around and said,
"really?!"
my interest obviously sincere, he balked immediately. an older gentleman standing next to him said,
"you can take my picture if you want to."
i asked if he was sure and he assured me. i held out my hand and introduced myself.
