M81 or Bodes Nebula is a grand design spiral galaxy approximately 12 million LY from earth.

It has a supermassive black hole of approximately 70 million solar masses at its centre.

M82 or The Cigar Galaxy is a starburst galaxy approximately 12 million LY from earth.

There is a massive amount of activity within this galaxy. 10 times as many stars are born within the centre as they are within the whole of the Milky Way and Supernovae erupt every 10 years.

In 2010 an object was discovered within the galaxy that was sending out radio waves unlike any other radio emission ever seen. The object was moving at four times the speed of light. Currently there are no theories which explain this phenomena fully.

A reflection and emission nebula involved and surrounded by dark nebulae Barnard 168 in the constellation of Cygnus (The Swan), IC5146 is also designated as an open cluster known as Collinder 470. Other designations for this object are Caldwell 19 and Sharpless 2-125. It is 4000 light years distant from Earth at a magnitude of 12.

This RGB image of the Orion Nebula (M42) was captured under challenging conditions, with the Moon close to full.

A moderate exposure strategy was used to preserve the nebula’s bright core while maintaining sufficient signal in the outer regions. Particular care was taken during processing to control gradients, balance colors, and keep a natural appearance, avoiding excessive saturation or HDR effects.

The final result highlights the intricate structures of this active star-forming region, from the luminous central cavity to the faint surrounding clouds.

(November 8, 2010) Deep Space LIVE was the place to go for a real live adrenalin rush on November 11, 2010. The screening featured incredible images of extreme athletes whose daredevil stunts took them to the physical and mental limits. BASE jumping from the south face of Austria's Dachstein, ice climbing in Japan, Canada and Italy, or trial biking over the rooftops of Linz—visitors were in for some pure excitement! With photos by Hermann Erber (AT).

This little experiment was staged so that I could get a handle on narrowband imaging having always used OSC CCD cameras in the past. Having already taken Ha, OIII and SII frames, the final stage of the experiment was to take an Ha/OIII/Hb image and then compare all three narrowband images with one of my earlier OSC versions. The composite above shows all four shots.

(November 18, 2010) You can’t miss it in the sky on a clear, dark night: that bright, cloudy band stretching clear across the heavens is The Milky Way. It’s a collection of about 200 billion stars proceeding along their trajectories around an inconceivably gigantic black hole that holds the entire galaxy together. Dietmar Hager, Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, will elaborate on the incredible forces at work here at the Ars Electronica Center’s next Deep Space LIVE event. The breathtaking jumbo-format (16x9-meter) visualizations feature 3D stereo.

Clear skies on the last night of the international sea cliff climbing meet meant a good view of the East and a chance to catch some early season subs around Cygnus. I only got a mixture of exposures as the dew was really problematic...however, fogging the lens was nothing to the effect it'd have on the rock in the Great Zawn the following day...

M8 is a giant emission nebula lighted by the stars in nearby open cluster NGC6526. It is located in the constellation of Sagittarius (The Archer) with a 5th magnitude and 4100 light years away from Earth. This magnificent Messier object can be seen just with binoculars or even the naked eye from a dark site, it is a popular subject of amateur astronomers for the northern summer skies.

M45, the Pleiades cluster, is probably the most famous cluster in the sky. The cluster is easily visible with the naked eye. However, it is best viewed with binoculars or small telescopes.

Although the cluster is also called the Seven Sisters, it actually contains over 3000 stars. Located in the constellation of Taurus, M45 is about 400 light-years away and only 13 light-years across.

Pleiades is dominated by very hot and extremely luminous stars that were formed within the last 100 million years. The stars illuminate the dust in the area, creating the blue reflection nebula. Astronomers once thought the cluster was created from this dust. However, it is now known that the dust is unrelated and is simply a dust cloud in the interstellar medium.
