I cheated!

So I went back to my data again in PI. Tried reading through the PI tutorials on using ACDNR and I was able to understand a lot more about how to use the tool. Got something so so out of it. I really wasn't too happy about the results. When I put some before and after images together, I was turned off by the views.

So on a whim, I exported a 16 bit tiff from before the ACDNR exercise and ran that through Noiseware. Given what I've learned in PI, I was able to tweak that software a lot faster. The results that I got in less than 10 minutes of working were cleaner and much less grungy than what I'd been getting after several hours in PI. I know that I'd be able to duplicate the same results, I just don't know the settings.

Anyhow, I was able to reattach the FIT headers and Annotate the image.

So, it's done now.

The Elephant’s Trunk Nebula (IC1396), 05/30/2021

Weirdly last time I took the telescope out camping for the weekend the skies were exceedingly kind to me. The weather was forecast to be cloudy and I almost did not even bring my gear, let alone set it all up once I got on site. But the clouds buggered off so, what the hell, let’s give it a chance. One unfortunate thing however was that this target did not rise from behind the trees until after 12:30am. This totally put the damper on how much partying I got to do with my friends. However, the weather was so good I was able to shoot this object three nights in a row and it ended up being the most time I’ve sunk into a single image so far. I believe that this is the best image I’ve capture yet and it was definitely worth the effort!

The Elephant’s Trunk Nebula is in the constellation Cepheus and is about 2,400 light-years away from your couch. The “trunk” itself is over 20 light-years in size.

The things to notice are the rings, of course, and the so-called Cassini Division between the A and B rings, most easily seen as the pencil-thin hair-line black gap in the rings at upper-right and lower-left, the shadow cast by the sphere of the planet onto the rings at the 4-o'clock position, and the dark belt near the equator of the planetary sphere itself.

Orion Nebula (M42), 03/04/2021

My yearly attempt at the Orion Nebula. Honestly, I was just messing about with my telescope and grabbed 40 minutes of data before Orion dropped behind my roof. Not much data to work with but it may be the best M42 I’ve done to date. I think it’s mainly because my post processing is getting better. Still so much to learn but it keeps the hobby fun.

Antennae Galaxies - My first ever Deep Sky Object (DSO) post processing/image editing attempt. The individual channel components were captured by THE HUBBLE Telescope. These are 2 Galaxies NGC 4038 / NGC 4039 which might have collided with each other eons ago and now are in a starburst phase.

I have downloaded the R, G, B and H-alpha individual wavelengths from the Hubble Legacy archive and did the necessary histogram stretching to bring out details and adjust colors when composed into a single RGB image. Still a long way to go. All the processing is done using FITS liberator for FITS to TIFF conversion, GIMP for the major stretching and denoising operations and finally minor edit in Lightroom to correct my overdoing of the Red channel.

May not be the best looking picture (first attempt so cut me some slack 😛) but I managed to bring out some red nebulosity thanks to the H alpha channel data combined with Red channel.

Thanks to @peculiar.galexy.astro for the amazing YT tutorials on Hubble data processing and your suggestions are welcome.

Cocoon Nebula (IC5146), 08/28/2020

I totally forgot I did this one. This is an emission nebula in the constellation of Cygnus. It is about 15 light-years across and roughly 4,000 light-years away. You can also see a dark nebula, Barnard 168, as well. This is actually clouds of dust that are blocking the light from the background stars and giving the impression of empty regions in space.

Eagle Nebula (M16), 07/26/2020

Man have the skies been clear a lot lately! Prepare for a bunch of images once I get a chance to process them all. First time that has been an issue for me in the PNW.

This is the Eagle Nebula, an object I have shot before on different equipment. The Eagle Nebula is a 5.5 million-year-old cloud of molecular hydrogen gas and dust stretching approximately 70 light years by 55 light years. It lies about 6,500 light-years away. The “Eagle” itself in the center is the famous Hubble image, “The Pillars of Creation”. Its good to have goals. LOL

Globular Cluster M13, one of 150 similar objects orbiting the core of our Milky Way galaxy, is a ball of several hundred thousand stars packed into a 145-light-year sphere, at a distance of 22,000 light years from Earth. The much more distant galaxy NGC 6207 is at upper-right, 30 million light years from Earth, 1400 times further away than M13. North is to the right in this photo.
