This was my major target and effort for Calstar 2012. Taken over a series of 3 nights from September 13-16. My first evening under the stars had the camera rotated in the wrong position, so I couldn't use the subs very well. Because the camera position varied from evening to evening, this became an exercise in making a mosaic as well.
Because of the mosaic layout, amp glow from the camera was a big problem. My previous efforts to use DSS and PI to calibrate and stack were not able to sufficiently remove the glow. In the end, I loaded up Maxim, pointed it at darks that were in the temperature range of the lights and let it do a full calibration. The stacking of the resulting 59 fit files were done in DSS 3.3.3 beta 47 as a Sigma Clip. Processing was done in PI where I cropped, DBE, masked stretch, NR, and then a small MT to tighten up the stars. Brought the images into LR3 for touches to fix the blue halos in the bright stars (artifacts from calibration) and some final lines from the mosaic.
Final stack of 59 lights of 10 minutes at 400 ISO. Calibrated in Maxim with 63 darks, 27 flats, and 55 bias. Shot with the full-spectrum Pentax K10D camera with the cooler attached giving temps ranging from 19-21C. Telescope was a Stellarvue SV4 guided with Maxim using Orion SSAG on SV70ED. All used on a Losmandy G-11.

Lessons learned: Maxim does a good job with non-linear amp glow areas. I'll be going back to some of my problematic subs to recalibrate. I'll have to see what I can do to fix the blue rings in the bright stars as calibration doesn't seem to control these well.
Hercules Cluster (M13), 05/24/2020
This is the Great Cluster in the Constellation of Hercules. It is about 25,00 light years away. There are hundreds of thousands of stars packed into an area 145 light-years in diameter.
I got to do a little imaging while I was up at my friend’s place. It was one of those nights where nothing was going right or easy. Most likely because we where partying and laughing like fools. Astrophotography and bourbon do not mix well. LOL. In fact, I did not think this image would work at all and I almost did not even bother to process it.

This is the Whirlpool Galaxy one of two major galaxies visible in Ursa Major. It is about twice the size of our galaxy and 27 million light-years away. It is an archetypal spiral galaxy seen head-on. This is the first time I've managed to record this galaxy with any success. I'll post a wider-field view of this later.
The Horsehead Nebula (IC434), 01/23/2021
I seem to always be whining about the PNW weather but dam! It has quite literally been five months since the last time I was able to image. For two nights in a row the clouds cleared just long enough for me to set up my equipment before the they would roll back in and I had to tear it all down again. Then, on the third night there was a clear window for four whole hours. I jumped on it, and being a stubborn SOB paid off. I was finally able to play with the new fancy-ass telescope mount my wife bought me for Christmas, it was awesome! I’m pretty happy with this image even though it has less than two hours of data. Maybe someday soon I’ll be able to sink some real time into this object and truly be able to pull out some detail.

Située dans la constellation des chiens de chasse à 27 millions d'années lumière de la Terre, M51 ou la galaxie du Tourbillon est une belle galaxie spirale vue de face. Elle est reliée par un pont de matière à une autre galaxie plus petite, NGC 5195.

Первое что видели посетители: «Clark'а не будет, но он обещал приехать на следующий фестиваль» — этот epic fail явно одна из причин малочисленности (хотя, справедливости ради замечу, что музыкальные достижения Кларка у многих вызывают некоторые сомнения), но были и люди, которые ради него катались в Москву этим летом, на Redpark fest.
В результате на сей раз некоторых друзей я видел чаще в баре, чем в зале — возможно им было и не настолько хорошо, как тем прекрасным, и широко известным в узких кругах, персонажам, которые приходя со всем здороваются, и слегка накидавшись всё в том же баре, довольные и с чувством выполненного долга уходят, причём они так делают всегда! Пока для меня загадка, в чем прикол таких проявлений на музыкальных (казалось бы) фестах. Не только у нас — встречал подобное и на Roadburn'e, и на Primaver'e. Люди приходят просто посидеть в баре, ну ок — видимо понимание наступит чуть позже.
На Feldermelder мы опоздали, пардон. Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Kluster, Cluster, Qluster, Harmonia, Harmonia 76 и т.д.) играл немного сонный ambient, он кстати был и на Primavera Sound 2015. В конце признес магическое заклинание — Eno! Все мигом оживились, захлопали, очевидно вспомнив легендарную лекцию Ино в СПб, о том как космические корабли бороздят просторы drone/ambient. А ведь ещё пару лет назад легко можно было себе представить совместное шоу Roedelius, Mobius, Rother и Eno, например. Кстати когда в Прибое играл Dieter Moebius (RIP) — у него было отличное видеошоу, Roedelius обошелся без спецэффектов, а жаль, хотя этот мягкий переливающийся свет возможно и неплохо подходит для подобной музыки.
Thomas Ankersmit из Берлина мне тоже понравился, тем более я его не то что не видел, но и никогда не слышал — интересный дядя, одним тегом и не описать: #electroacoustic #computer #synthesizers #saxophone #freejazz.
Наконец вышла датчанка SØS Gunver Ryberg, которая всех мигом взбодрила, для полноты картины можете посмотреть Boiler Room Berlin с ней. Также впервые увидел, но именно она мне и понравилась больше всех, и хотя её дискография вроде бы насчитывает ровно одну кассету ltd: SGR* ^ CAV* — Moved By Magnets (2014), что не помешало ей поставить зал на уши.
Moa Pillar (Feodor Pereverzev) — молодой человек, который выпустил уже три-четыре релиза (начиная с 2011 года между прочим, а я и не знал)) — ни разу не слышал его вживую, за свой techno/drone получает лайк!
Interchain — психоделическое techno от Е.Горбунова из NRKTK/Stoned Boys, кстати эти NRKTK мне когда-то очень нравились, чего скрывать, Stoned Boys не знаю совсем, Interchain скорее понравились чем нет — но видно насколько у них всё продумано — Москва одним словом, хотя надо отдать им должное — они вторые кому удалось завести зал в этот вечер.
Dita Redrum — молодые ребята, исследующие глубины witch и около того. В Прибое у них возникло спорное решение играть подобную музыку с живыми ударными — поэтому мне понравилось частично (хотя некоторые друзья вообще фыркали)), тем не менее, на мой взгляд они вполне себе переспективные. В 2014 был дебютный цифровой релиз — V.
SP4K — прошел в тумане/баре/угаре и ожидании uber.
Кстати, уже под утро, недалеко от выхода на улице встретили парнишку с ни разу не покер фэйсом, точнее слегка разбитым. «Удался ли фест?» — спросил я, — «Да да, very good!» — ответил он, «но я не знал что вокруг Прибоя столько одичалых», тем временем патруль уже приехал, и направлялся в сторону Прибоя. Ещё был веселый момент, когда одна из прекрасных посетительниц, общаясь с друзьями в баре, взмахнула рукой таким образом, что куда-то улетело её кольцо(!) обручальное или нет, с бриллиантом или без, я так и не понял, но человек 5-10 (слегка под шофе) рьяно ринулись его искать, переворачивая диваны в лучших традициях фильма «12 стульев», к счастью кольцо всевластия всё же нашлось, но конечно же вообще не там где его все искали — главное что обошлось без особых разрушений для многострадального здания Прибоя, лайк!

Despite 40hrs in 10 nights was spend during the trip, due to the poor weather condition, I can't get similar background Intensity and the 2 panels on the right were fogged. I am going to give up on this mosaic. But the large image is still worth looking at, the performance of the recent released William Optics Red Cat is very decent. I think it can preform even better on clear night which I don't have.

Капелла — лучший зал в Санкт-Петербурге, да очевидно что и на этой планете тоже — ходил бы туда хоть каждый день (подходящее место для выступления групп типа Sunn O))) и My Bloody Valentine)).
Разумеется я перепутал время — как можно начинать концерты в 7 вечера, думал я, в 19 наверняка откроется только бар, и разложат мерч (а он кстати присутствовал тоже, в виде CD/DVD). Концерт был похож на небольшой спектакль, в непринужденной обстановке звучал Шопен, Ólafur как я понял ещё и любитель поговорить, заявил, что него тут есть бокальчик односолодового(!), Ваше здоровье, хаха. Их сопровождал струнный квартет (т.е. был full live, а не dj set), и всё же для полного счастья я ждал внезапного «Бена Фроста», думал сейчас этот Ólafur ещё пять минут поприкидывается, и врубит уже наконец нойзовый drone_dark_ambient, но нет, Ben Frost не пришёл, немного жаль (но все мы его видели, так что ок).
В конце они немного пообщались с аудиторией, потом конечно вышли на бис, благодарные зрители подарили музыкантам кучу цветов, на самом деле их в основном получал Ólafur (но он всё же отдал парочку и Алисе, молодес), у него, судя по всему, нехилая группа поддержки в СПб, состоящая из прекрасных фей — лайк! Сказать что был полный зал — это ничего не сказать, настоящий over аншлаг, но к моему удивлению стояла идеальная тишина (никто не прыгал, не разговаривал по телефону, не чихал, не кашлял, не скрипел дверями) и лишь едва слышные щелчки фотозатворов от смартфонов изредка нарушали enjoy the silence — в общем практически лабораторные условия, мне очень понравилось, и публика тоже. Один из лучших концертов года в СПб!

HPL Media Street Event @ Street Art Museum, St Petersburg, Russia, 2015.09.26-27
Кто впечатлил - немецкий дуэт Oake, которых я раньше не видел, к тому же у них был отличный звук, правда из-за того зал получился проходным - там всё время фланировали клиенты ближайших баров, с удивлением взирая на происходивший шабаш (Bathseba Zippora в длином платье до пят, прыгала босиком по бетону, с распущенными волосами, напевая что-то в микрофон - если это можно так назвать, а этот Eric крутил ручки, постукивая всякими штучками - получился какой-то raw-witch/post-techno перфоманс, местами а-ля Amon Düül II, местами Crystal Castles/Kap Bambino - вполне себе неплохо, думаю они ещё появятся в СПб.
Отметился на фесте и широко известный в узких кругах СПб(и далеко за его пределами) электронный экспериментатор Sergey Kostyrko (Coaxil, Mars-96, Бензольные мертвецы) - жаль мы не успели к началу его сэта (неплохо они придумали с полупрозрачным экраном между артистами и зрителями, на который прецировалось видео, выглядело довольно необычно - а-ля 3D); потом некто игравший почти drone на сцене Mosaique (но мы всё это время проторчали в баре(ах)).
Плюс все эти модные (и совсем no name для меня)) A/V японцы: Intercity Express(Tetsuji Ohno) из Токио, и Ryoichi Kurokawa - они выступали в здании заброшенного цеха, где и закатили по очереди неплохое световое шоу, чего нельзя сказать о саунде, но подозреваю что для настолько огромной бетонной коробки, где миллионы отражений звуковых волн генерируют эхо с бинауральными эффектами, иначе и быть не могло. Незаметно начали приближаться мосты, и некоторые свалили, там был бесплатный шаттл (да-да он всё-таки существовал).
Тем временем на улице тоже устроили лазерное представление (некие немцы), правда оно мне показалось побюджетнее того что устроили на отличном фесте Present Perfect: www.flickr.com/photos/deepskyobject/albums/72157656958021442.
Но в целом - норм, пару совершенно новых для СПб людей все кто хотел увидел, к тому же это был Мedia event, а не Primavera sound, поэтому скорее like, чем наоборот.

Насколько я понимаю, это был первый визит Boris в РФ, но они сыграли не greatest hits (как все обычно хотят от всех групп), а просто продолжили свой тур, в честь юбилея альбома Pink (2005), переизданного под концерты, в виде Deluxe Edition, 3xLP (2016), который отличается от оригинала парой архивных тем. Когда-то, в 2006, его вытащили из подполья деятели из Sunn O))), издав на своём Southern Lord, тогда же вышла и совместная пластинка Sunn O)))+Boris — Altar (2006), этот альбом став одним из лучших в своём роде нравится мне до сих пор, и кажется что именно после Altar вся эта сцена и двинулась в массы. Собственно нынешний тур Boris проходит в честь начала их прорыва, десять лет назад, который стал возможен благодаря Pink, Altar и Сан (хотя напрашивается и отдельный тур Boris+Sunn O))) — Altar, но видимо в след. раз)).
Несмотря на все эти фесты, они мне ни разу нигде так и не попались за все эти годы, и как часто бывает в подобных случаях — ожидания оказались (слегка) завышены, хотя технически всё прозвучало чётко и без сбоев, к тому же люди реально выкладываются (учитывая что концерты/перелёты каждый день), но из-за того что лично я их слушаю очень избирательно, то по суммарному воздействию легко назову концерты и покруче — My Bloody Valentine на Примавере в 2009 (хотя этот наверное стал вообще лучшим в истории), можно вспомнить и Mogwai в Космонавте, Swans на OFF, или недавнее внезапное шоу фан-клуба группы Скорая помощь, в одном из крафтовых заведений, например.
В итоге мне больше всего понравилось два момента — нойзовый финал 20-ти минутной stoner/drone телеги Just Abandoned Myself, переходящий в космический опус Farewell, и тема с гонгом, потом поспорив что они не выйдут на бис, мы его в итоге проболтали глядя на сцену от бара. А на бис они сыграли два трека из новой епишки Mr. Shortkill (2016) — там песни из саундтрека к аниме Ninja Slayer From Animation/Охотник на ниндзя, без понятия что это, но в том же саундтреке засветились и Melt-Banana, посмотреть что ли.
Жаль, что оказался пропущен бельгийский разогрев, в лице Syndrome — это был Mathieu Vandekerckhove, guitarist of Amenra (которые стали одними из лучших на недавнем Roadburn'e), но мы простояли с ребятами в очереди на входе, траблы возникли из-за большого наплыва народа — хотя полного аншлага и не случилось, но людей было побольше чем на PTV, не ожидал что они вовремя стартанут, как пошутил один приятель, когда я сказал что раз написано в 20, то в СПб это значит 21 — с такими темами пожалуйста на СКИФ, хаха. Запомнился суперколоритный звукарь Boris — мощный тип, но ручки выкручивал аккуратно, и успевал при этом ещё и инстаграмить, узнаю кое-кого.

The Veil Nebula is a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in the constellation Cygnus.
It constitutes the visible portions of the Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant, many portions of which have acquired their own individual names and catalogue identifiers. The source supernova was a star 20 times more massive than the Sun which exploded between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. At the time of explosion, the supernova would have appeared brighter than Venus in the sky, and visible in daytime. The remnants have since expanded to cover an area of the sky roughly 3 degrees in diameter (about 6 times the diameter, and 36 times the area, of the full Moon). While previous distance estimates have ranged from 1200 to 5800 light-years, a recent determination of 2400 light-years is based on direct astrometric measurements. (The distance estimates affect also the estimates of size and age.)
The Hubble Space Telescope captured several images of the nebula. The analysis of the emissions from the nebula indicate the presence of oxygen, sulfur, and hydrogen. The Cygnus Loop is also a strong emitter of radio waves and x-rays.

L'amas de la Chevelure de Bérénice ou amas de Coma (Abell 1656) est un vaste amas de galaxies qui contient plus de 1000 galaxies identifiées.
Avec l'amas du Lion (Abell 1367), c'est l'un des deux amas majeurs qui constituent le superamas de la Chevelure de Bérénice
La région centrale est dominée par deux galaxies elliptiques géantes : NGC 4874 et NGC 4889.
Comme il est courant pour les amas de cette richesse, les galaxies sont très majoritairement elliptiques et de type S0, avec seulement quelques spirales plus jeunes dont beaucoup sont probablement situées en périphérie de l'amas.

Elephant’s Trunk Nebula (IC1396), 08/18/2020
This was a fun night and an unexpected result. I took my equipment out to my favorite dark sky location to camp and capture photons. I was looking forward to showing off my hobby to my wife and some friends who were camping as well. I got my gear setup and took my first capture, but the frame was very faint and unexciting. Kind of boring. Oh well. Everything else was going well so I decided to stick with it and see. The next day I did a quick stack and process and DAMN there was a ton of detail there after all! I did not quite get the framing right but that only means I have a reason to try this one again.
I don’t know how someone saw an elephant trunk when looking at this but hey you discover it, you get to name it I guess. It is found in the constellation of Cepheus and is about 2,400 light-years from us. The “trunk” itself is over 20 light-years long. In 2003 several very young stars where discovered in the circular cavity in the tip of the trunk. The stellar wind from these hot young stars may have carved out this hole.

The nights are starting later and later, and Orion is setting earlier and earlier, so I might not get too many or any more chances to shoot the majestic nebula. This image was particularly hard to get, as I was shooting from my building's back yard in what's, for all intents and purposes, downtown Ottawa, where light pollution, especially near the horizon, is substantial, hence the background noise as I try to extract as much detail out of the shots as I could.
Oh well, just you wait, I'll get you next Fall, Orion!

The Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405) as seen in the back yard. This is a sum of 72 lights over 3 nights in November, 2012. Each light is 10 minutes at 400 ISO.
Used the Stellarvue SV4 refractor with the SV F6 flattener.
Taken with the full spectrum modified Pentax K10D camera. Used a Peltier cooler on the camera with temperatures between 5-10C. Most subs were at 8C. Baader Moon and Skyglow filter used with UV/IR filter stacked on two nights. On the final night, I used an IDAS LPR filter.
The frames were calibrated using Maxim with 256 bias frames, 95 darks, and 2, 21, or 53 flats depending on the day.
Stacked using DSS to make the mosaic. PP with PixInsight for crop, DBE, MT, ADCNR, and histogram stretch. Exported to LR3 for final touch and upload.
I'm happy with this shot. I would have liked to have better framing, but as it stands this is not bad for being captured in a suburban location. There was flexure in the RA direction. I'm working to solve this problem.

Here is a very special picture, which requested a bit of luck to get the aurora and time for the star trails. The view is from the church in Tewkesbury, north of Quebec City. The northern lights have been slow to show up. From the beginning of the evening, I started a time lapse. My camera captured a photo every 20 seconds from 9:30 pm until 2:00 am. By stacking the pictures, I got the circular star movement effect caused by the rotation of the Earth.

Voici une photo bien spéciale, qui a demandé un brin de chance pour avoir les aurores et beaucoup de temps pour les trainées d'étoiles. La vue est celle de l'église à Tewkesbury, au nord de Québec. Les aurores ont mis du temps à se pointer le bout du nez. Dès le début de la soirée, j'ai démarré un timelapse. L'appareil a donc capturé une photo toutes les 20 secondes de 9h30 jusqu'à 2h du matin. En empilant toutes les photos, nous obtenons l'effet circulaire produit par la rotation de la Terre. Au centre de ce cercle, nous retrouvons l'étoile Polaire.

The Veil Nebula is a cloud of heated and ionized gas and dust in the constellation Cygnus. It constitutes the visible portions of the Cygnus Loop, a supernova remnant, many portions of which have acquired their own individual names and catalogue identifiers. The source supernova was a star 20 times more massive than the Sun which exploded between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. At the time of the explosion, the supernova would have appeared brighter than Venus in the sky, and visible in the daytime. The remnants have since expanded to cover an area of the sky roughly 3 degrees in diameter (about 6 times the diameter, and 36 times the area, of the full Moon). While previous distance estimates have ranged from 1200 to 5800 light-years, a recent determination of 2400 light-years is based on direct astrometric measurements. The Hubble Space Telescope has captured several images of the nebula. The analysis of the emissions from the nebula indicates the presence of oxygen, sulphur, and hydrogen. The Cygnus Loop is also a strong emitter of radio waves and x-rays.
