After a little research, I discerned the following about this figurehead and its’ history:
The US Battleship Louisiana was built in 1907 and was one of the “Great White Fleet”. It was not a part of the Spanish American War, but this memorial of the ship was meant to commemorate those that lost their lives in that war. It also memorializes The USS Maine and the plaque that speaks of the Maine was made from metal recovered from the actual ship. The Roman Numerals, supposedly signifying the year the monument were erected, have an error. The D should be a C. This memorial was actually erected in 1939.
