Pair of Kneeling Angels
About 1525 - 1542, possibly by Silvio Cosini, Italy, Florence, marble
The positions of the arms and hands indicate that the angels originally functioned as candleholders on either side of an altar. Candles were used during the Mass to illuminate the altar and evoke the Symbolism of Christ as light.

Glazed and painted terracotta
Workshop of Andrea della Robbia (1435—1525)
Large-scale groups in various materials were used as focal points for devotion in chapels and churches throughout Europe. Terracotta was particularly popular in Tuscany and around Bologna.
Terracotta groups on this scale were difficult to make. The figures here were each constructed separately. Mary Magdalene, on the right, is now in several pieces and probably shattered during the first (or biscuit) firing. This prevented a second firing to secure the glazes, so instead the figure was painted.

The Virgin and the Child
About 1520 - 1525, Germany, Bavaria, painted limewood
Decorated with equal attention to the front and back, and with metal fixings on the top of her head, this figure was suspended from the vault of a church. Its theatricality was not unusual in German churches of this period.
The biblical book of Revelation describes a woman, commonly associated with the Virgin, standing on a crescent moon and wearing a crown with twelve stars. This figure was originally crowned, possibly with a metal crown with glass or enamel decoration.
My mind wandered eclectically as in the rain I made my way along the Ubbo Emmiussingel to the Groningen Railway Station. I saw this pretty Rose Mallow, Hibiscus syriacus, in a narrow garden.
And just before that mauve-blue, my eye was pulled upwards to look at this handsome paneled decor at Nr 23, a house designed by a highly eclectic architect for one J.T. Vos.
The flower motif is rather more delicate than most in Groningen. I searched around a bit to see who'd made it for this 1885 house.
Turns out our tableau is by the ceramist François Gillet (1822-1889), of the Rue Fénelon, Paris. He'd developed a technique of painting volcanic stone, glazing lava stone ('Lave émaillée'). Here in Groningen it's very prettily done, and a delight to the eye even in the rain.

St Peter
About 1510 - 1520, Southern Netherlands, Oak
Medieval Christians felt a deep affinity for the saints. They saw them as heavenly helpers, pleading with God to be merciful towards mankind.
One of the most popular saints was St Peter, the first Pope. He was often shown holding the keys to Heaven and wearing his papal tiara. This figure was originally brightly painted. It would probably have been set in a church, on a console or ledge on one of the nave columns, with candles burning before it.

Buddha Shakyamuni
1500 - 1600, Ming dynasty, cast and gilded bronze
Shakyamuni was the historical Buddha, born as an Indian prince in about 485 BC. This figure represents the crucial moment in his life when he asked the earth to bear witness that he had resisted the attacks of Mara, the goddess of evil. His right hand extends downward to touch the soil, a symbolic gesture known as chudiyin (bhumisparsha mudra).
In the gray weather we visited the Cathedral of Luxembourg. Mostly I don't post photos of works of art but let this be an exception.
I was drawn to the Lush Tropical scene of this tapestry. The very fine hanging shows the rich natural environment of the Egyptian Nile. You have to look sharply in the left corner to see that the depicted story is actually that of the flight of Jesus and his family to Egypt (Gospel of St Matthew 2, 13-15). Perhaps in the distance (just centre right on the hillside) is the house where they're heading. But just look at all those plants of various kinds! and I see a parrot as well.
This tapestry dates from the time of the Jesuits. They built this church between 1613 and 1621 and were purged from Luxembourg in 1773. I haven't been able to find any other information about this grand piece of weaving art.
The front door of the The Banco de Portugal in Faro, located in Praça D. Francisco Gomes (or "Jardim").
Built in 1926, under the guidance of architect Adães Bermudes , it is an interesting example of Neo-Manueline Revival architecture , with Islamic suggestions on the main door.
A sepia-toned image featuring carved stone heads, possibly guardian figures or decorative elements from a garden or architectural setting. The weathered texture and stylized features suggest an aged or antique origin. Their purpose might have been ornamental or symbolic, perhaps intended to protect or watch over a specific areaUn'immagine in tonalità seppia raffigurante teste scolpite in pietra, possibilmente figure di guardiani o elementi decorativi provenienti da un giardino o da un contesto architettonico. La texture consumata e le caratteristiche stilizzate suggeriscono un'origine antica o d'epoca. Il loro scopo potrebbe essere stato ornamentale o simbolico, forse destinato a proteggere o vegliare su una specifica area.

Left:
Pectoral Cross
Probably about 1050, England, walrus ivory
The delicately carved archer on the lid of this cross probably represents a figure from the Old Testament: Ishmael, son of Abraham. The reverse shows the Lamb of God surrounded by the four symbols of the evangelists. The cross originally formed a case for a gold box, perhaps containing relics of the True Cross.
Middle:
Reliquary Cross
About 1000 (back and sides 900 -1000), Figure England, Cross Germany, Gold plaques on a cedar base, walrus ivory for the figure of Christ
A badly damaged inscription around the edge appears to list the relics once contained in the cavity beneath the figure of Christ. The wooden core is made of cedar. linking it to the True Cross, which was made of this material. The reliquary now contains part of a human finger.
Right:
Pendant Cross (The Beresford Hope Cross)
800 - 900, Probably Italy, Cloisonné enamel mounted in gold; the frame gilded silver
This cross was probably made to house a relic of the True Cross. It would have been worn around the neck. On the front, Christ appears between the Virgin and St John. On the back, the Virgin raises her hands in prayer surrounded by saints John, Peter, Andrew and Paul.

Earthenware with three-coloured (sancai) glaze Lady Loraine Gift, in memory of her husband Sir Percy Loraine
We went to a friend's home in the Silicon Valley for dinner. They have an LED illuminated decorative sphere over the fireplace in front of a mirror. To take this shot I pointed my 4mm fisheye lens through a gap into the sphere - it got a lot of the sphere with its 210º angle of view, including my fingers holding the camera :-)
I processed a realistic, a balanced, and a paintery HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

Two plaster statues that were created by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse and presented to the architect Charles Garnier as decorative art for the new Opera house.
Called "Torchères" (flares) the finished works are now electroplated in bronze, holding candelabras and gracing each side of the grand staircase at Opéra Garnier.
