I forgot to take an intentional PAD image. So this picture that I took of the bags of clothing that I donated to a charity for their free clothing giveaway will have to do for today's PAD. It feels good to declutter and allow someone else to enjoy the clothing.

No wonder that I could not navigate by compass, it was totally covered by all this stuff on my deck! But there was no more room anywhere in my boat. I need a declutter system:)

I needed my thermos to drink, my camaras, the gun (in the yellow drybag), satellite phone, the GPS is visible in the back, some food, some cloths to add especially on my head. the Leeboard on the right-hand side was sometimes in my way. Most of the time I had to paddle and could not sail. Very often I hit the crossbars with my paddle. It was very difficult to control the boat without the rudder.

No matter how much I declutter there are some things I can never part with. Mrs Ted (original name, I know) is 60 years old so I thought she deserved a photoshoot.

To declutter 2008, I'll get rid of 10 things a day for ten days. I started with my computer. A few more than 10 but it's way overdue.

In an attempt to declutter the living room I started unpacking the clothes.

Meanwhile hard core kitchen cabinets installing going on.

I posted my first ever eBay sales today! In an attempt to declutter and make money for travelling I'm trying to sell a load of my stuff. It's only little bits at the moment but it all adds up! One man's trash is another's treasure and all that.

Today's 30 Day Challenge was the so-called "scary closet" in my guest room/library. It was stuff to the point of literally overflowing into the room, so I spent a good portion of the day emptying it all out, sorting through EVERYTHING that was in there, and putting back only what I needed to keep. In fact, I did such a good job sorting, Dumping, and Donating, that I ended up with 1 less plastic tub, and 3 (!!!) empty canvas storage bins! And as a reward, I’m going to stop by Home Depot and pick up a few more of the nice canvas bins to replace the not-so-nice ones, so that they all match.

category 16: books!

this one's title can be translated into: " you could be ruining your own life" (and become a total failure) - unless you declutter and get rid of unread books for good! Think: bookcrossing!

It's the 24th day of my 30 Day Challenge, and I spent a few hours Dealing with the futon space in my library/guest room. For months now it's been in "bed" mode, overflowing with pillows, blankets, throw pillows, and even more pillows. And the storage bin underneath was a black hole of the unknown. Today I took it all apart, Donated most of the pillows, a lot of the blankets, some pillowcases, and the three (yes, 3!!!) shower curtains hiding underneath. Then I put 2 winter blankets in a blanket bag, added 1 medium weight fleece to the box, and flipped the futon into couch mode. Topped with just a few pillows and a couple throw blankets, it no longer overpowers the entire room.

Cleaning out the junk drawer. Only a little more to go.

After getting new counter tops we are not putting anything back in the drawers or cupboards until we clean and declutter. It's about time!

It's empty now and now to decide what to put back in that drawer - not junk. We found a smaller drawer to handle what was "necessary".

I decided to declutter the photo studio and let go of equipment I’m not using regularly:

3 x Alien Bees b1600, 640ws AC powered lights, flash and modeling light. Excellent condition.

3 x 15 foot extension cords, like new.

2 x travel soft boxes with dedicated Alien Bees connectors, excellent condition.

1 x AB speed ring for any other brand soft box. like new.

4 x Pocket Wizard Plus II, good, used, some wear-n-tear that does not effect function.

4 x PW Plus II Hildozine Caddy (connects to the PW, then connects to light stand), like new.

3 x PC mini connector cables for PW to AB. excellent condition.

2 x Alien Bees replacement lamps, new. backup for the flash bulb.

2 x Beauty Dish, one white other is silver. not pictured, used, works. bonus!

1 x Gossen light meter, used, accurate, battery door is uncooperative.

1 x trunk to keep everything together (but not for travel). used.

I did travel with the kit (in a different, sturdier trunk) to Mexico once. Everything came home unscathed and has been used since then, primarily at local (indoor) events or my home studio. Only thing not included in the kit is light stands (because that’s photographer’s choice), and a backdrop stand (I have an extra one if you’re interested). Fwiw, the modeling lights are bright enough to be used for video recording, if you’re into that kind of thing.

If you are interested, make me an offer I can’t refuse.

30 Day "D" Challenge Day 6 - Today's official goal was digging out and donating 2 random kitchen bits I've literally never used: a microwave bacon/egg maker, and a plastic "Taco tray" which is basically a round dish with a bunch of compartments for organizing small toppings. They both went in the donate pile, and in the process I also picked up a cabinet organizer and made a better place for my cutting boards and largest baking sheet.

A typography project that I'll be completing tomorrow...

Gordon got a bit sticky in my boy's bed room!!

FlyLady said A LOAD A DAY KEEPS THE PILES AWAY! So i've been washing every day when there is a load.

I think When I declutter the bedrooms some more then I may find something else to go in the washer with Gordon.

(ok so it is 'keeps the chaos away' but I like my verision much better.)

We cleaned out our kitchen cabinets and got them organized this weekend. So well put together! This is the Mexican and Italian shelves.

been going through the STUFF in our house.

decided it was time to declutter... AGAIN.

these books are on their way to HalfPriceBooks where I will try to be strong and just take the cash offered.... but will probably be weak and take the store credit in order to bring home MORE books.

It doesn't seem so bad. A bit "lived in" maybe, but not too cluttered.

This is what my desk looked like at the end of April 2009.

I like to think of it as organised clutter.

Apr 2009

I won't lie, part of me just feels like giving up on de-crapping at this point.

:-(

I'll just take the day off and start fresh, tho.

I'm just glad the wall got taken care of...

last day of winter break. She wanted to declutter her room, he wanted to play crazy 8's and bake, I wanted fresh air in the sunshine. Wishes granted all around.

We’re not greedy, we say. It’s everyone else who is acquiring useless stuff. ~ Judith Levine

I've found that despite reading quite a number of self-help decluttering books, actually shifting stuff out of my house, out of my comfort zone, out of my life, isn’t always simple. More and more I realize how easy it is to lapse into keeping and longing for too much stuff, all the while recognizing that stuff isn’t going to change my life for the better.

So, why do we gather stuff and why do we hang on to it, often long after it has served any useful purpose? Often for me it's about emotional ties - there is the stuff people give me that I feel obliged to keep, and there is the stuff that speaks to me of good times or of times I held on and made it through despite the odds. For me, a lot of my stuff speaks to my past, a past I have often yet to make peace with. I realize that even that’s an excuse – emotional pain forming a barrier to utilizing common sense but still, it's very real.

Deep down, I also know that it’s the memory in my mind’s storage that needs dusting off the most. When I’ve learned to dissociate memories from stuff, I know I’ll find it easier to let go. Until then, I'll keep trying to spend wisely, declutter when the mood descends, and ask myself “Do I really need that?”. There will be times this doesn't work, but I'll keep working on it.

In creating a pathway to a more minimalist lifestyle, I'm going to practice:

* Acceptance that I am the sum of my relationships, my health, my dreams, my hopes, my sanity, my connections, and not the sum of what I have.

* Self-forgiveness for my inevitable moments of weakness while living in a society driven by a “stuff solution” for every problem.

* Realization that she who dies with the most toys doesn't delay the inevitable. It’s the journey that matters, not the collecting, it's the legacy of who I am, the love I have spread, that lives on, not what I owned.

So now there’s another “R” for me. Recycle, reuse, reduce, and release.

How do you let go of the "stuff" that isn't either useful or beautiful in your life? Please share your thoughts in the comments.

I didn't even know what was in the back of this one.
