The irony in the error seen here is astounding. The film in the background is "Sherlock Holmes and the Incident at Victoria Falls", as you can see displayed in the bottom right corner of the video frame, and the scene in the background was an autopsy done by Dr.Watson. In the exact minute I was watching it, the computer crashed, and the Dr.Watson Postmortem Debugger program (a component of Windows XP) appeared. Imagine the odds of both Dr.Watsons at the same time, much less dealing with postmortem issues!

Hilarious. By the way the Dr.Watson in the film was useful, but XP's Dr.Watson is useless...

Sometime during Friday afternoon someone screwed around with the phone lines in our building, meaning we lost our phone line and our Internet connection.

This sucks for so many reasons, but the most annoying is that since I syncronise everything off a mini mac at home running subversion, I never think about whether I have the latest of anything locally across any of the 5 machines I work on.

 

Naturally I forgot to bring some files home from work, most annoyingly the ones of the main "Hana" project.

 

I did manage to get a few things done though, like a quick debug view of what the petals that are generated look like before being used to generate textures, plus some behind the scenes preparation for making sure that all aspects of one entire plant will use the same properties when generating assets, previously it was all random, now some main properties will be chosen for all flowers in one plant for example, while keeping certain details random.

 

Pretty obvious stuff, but I hadn't gotten around to it yet.

 

Also I did some quick tests with the lovely TinyXML (http://www.grinninglizard.com/tinyxml/).

 

It was just like the bad old days, being stuck with whatever you managed to download to read at home before you left work.

chipKIT PGM Programmer/Debugger for use with Digilent chipKIT Platforms

 

The chipKIT PGM is designed to work with the MPLAB® and MPLAB X development environments available from Microchip. This allows the chipKIT boards, for example, to be used as a more traditional microcontroller development platform using the professional tools available from Microchip. While the PICkit™3 programmer can generate programming voltages needed to program all Microchip PIC devices, the chipKIT PGM can only program devices that are programmable with 3.3V programming voltage. Further, the PICkit3 can source a small amount of current to provide power to some boards being programmed. The chipKIT PGM does not provide power to the board being programmed.

PICkit 3 In-circuit Debugger

 

The MPLAB PICkit 3 allows debugging and programming of PIC and dsPIC Flash microcontrollers at a most affordable price point using the powerful graphical user interface of the MPLAB Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The MPLAB PICkit 3 is connected to the design engineer's PC using a full speed USB interface and can be connected to the target via an Microchip debug (RJ-11) connector (compatible with MPLAB ICD 2, MPLAB ICD 3 and MPLAB REAL ICE). The connector uses two device I/O pins and the reset line to implement in-circuit debugging and In-Circuit Serial Programming.

In the process of debugging I wondered if the problem was my big components. I'd ordered a 1kv capacitor not realising the size difference. Changing it for the regular ceramic one one had no discernable effect however.

Mark is in the centre of the shot debugging one of the many Cactus- and PW-triggered flashes.

 

Meanwhile I'm standing there in the warm spring sunshine, one of several voice-activated light-stands used in Mark's shots. I have a Cactus-triggered flash in one hand and my D80 in the other.

 

What's one supposed to do without straying too far from the designated position? Answer: switch the flash to be Cactus-triggered and optically-slaved, then slave it from my SB600 positioned at camera right. The SB600 is triggered from a Skyport on the D80.

 

I'm happy and Mark has a setup shot for when he gets around to photoshopping the non-illuminated person into the shot. I (or maybe Mark) will post it into the comments below.

Busted URL's suck

 

Damn link in the article , Simplicity is broken. I hate this becuase the link that's broken (or missing) is always the one you want to read.

 

It's interesting because I know Joel runs Citydesk in debug mode. So if the app was checking the links it would have been noticed. Citydesk is a solid product (way back when it was a new product I gave it a severe bashing and it came out trumps in every department.. even sent back some improvements which they took aboard and improved beyond what I suggested.) but it looks like Citydesk does not have a link checker.

 

Link rot is a minor problem, but it is annoying to users who digest sites. As developers this is solvable. Especially for links on your own site.

  

Django URLField

 

One nice thing I found with django is the URLField type that checks the existance of an url at the time you associate data with the field (AFAICT), You still have to regularly check for link rot with link checking tools.

chipKIT uC32: Basic Microcontroller Board with Uno R3 Headers

 

The uC32 features a USB serial port interface for connection to the IDE and can be powered via USB or an external power supply. We had a bit of a sticky job this afternoon trying to tune a load of radio microphones.

 

We've got a school production coming up in December. Do you remember when to get cast in a school production you needed a loud voice? Not any more! This production requires the use of all ten of our headset microphones.

 

Five are working well, one has a dodgy PSU on the receiver which shouldn't be hard to replace, but four of them are giving us real headaches, and we're suspecting some kind of RF interference, or knackered transmitters.

 

One thing that does make our life easier is this very useful stage box which runs on a digital snake.

 

Using the AES50 protocol, this box connected 16 XLR inputs and 8 outputs through one Cat5 cable to the mixer at the back of the room. This is really useful, as trying to drag big XLR bundles across rooms is a pain. The AES protocol doesn't use standard ethernet packets and can't be routed through conventional routers and switches. That's not really a problem in the theatre context, where direct patches are easier to manage.

finally debugged the code, freakin 2150 lines of ASM and it turned out to be a stupid CARRY bit, which was screwing up the setpoint display, but only when messing with the menu buttons.

 

Phew, I'm glad to have this done. Next step is pump control...

Right extruder prints fine. Left extruder (the Inverted stepper one) prints too little plastic at the bottom and too much plastic on top of my Aztec Pyramid test.

 

Feels like a firmware bug.

 

Update: Turns out this was caused by a sticky filament spool.
