Sometimes we are so busy with our lives trying to fight and survive and fight our way in this world that we tend to forget some little joys in our life. We ignore what is obvious; the existence of other beings large and small. I went to friends house and was just roaming around with the camera when he pointed out this small friend to me. I had to stand on a tube well for quite a long time to capture this small colourful friend. Sorry, could not get a better angle since it was quite high up in the tree and I don't have a telephoto lens. I know the tree is a little distracting but it helps in the framing...

Juvenile Robin indulges in a practice known as 'anting.' 'Anting’ is a self-annointing behaviour during which birds rub insects, usually ants, on their feathers and skin. The bird may pick up the insects in their bill and rub them on the body (active anting), or they may lie in an area of high density of insects and perform dust bathing-like movements (passive anting). The insects secrete liquids containing chemicals such as formic acid, which can act as an insecticide, miticide, fungicide, or bactericide.
Alternatively, this could make the insects edible by removing the distasteful acid, or, possibly supplement the bird's own preen oil. Instead of ants, birds can also use millipedes. More than 200 species of bird are known to ‘ant.’ Stoats are known to roll around in moss in a similar way.
There are many theories and no definitive answer as to why birds engage in this kind of behaviour. Depending on the species, birds can use ‘anting’ to get rid of parasites, to sooth irritation, or as a way to reach a euphoric state, from the absorption of formic acid.
I must admit when I first saw the bird, I thought it was injured, but it was perfectly okay, happily popping back and forth, 'anting' for some time.
