The theme for Teledioscope this week is Patriotic. I have to say that it is hard for me to feel patriotic right now. What is happening in Washington with the budget and debt ceiling is ridiculous. The system is broken.

In Athens, Thessaloniki and score of other cities and towns across Greece, protesters have continued to attend rallies in protest against the government and the austerity measures demanded by the country's creditors.

In Athens more than 100,000 gathered peacefully in the central Syntagma Square opposite parliament to express their indigbation with not only the policies ofthe ruling PASOK party but also with the whole political system in general which is widely perceived as being corrupt and unrespeonsive to popular needs.

In Greece's second largest city, Thessaloniki thousands also rallied, taking part in open assemblies which lasted from 6pm till after midnight, despite torrential downpours. Debates not only focused on the current economic crisis but also touched on wider issues such as how the country should be governed.

However, as the days pass demonstrators, following the example of Spanish, Egyptian and Tunisian protests have been organising themselves with internet camps, cleaning crews, translation groups being formed in order to get their message across and keep sites tidy.

In sharp contrast to massive unrest that gripped Greece in December 2008 following the police shooting of a teenager the present demonstrations have been remarkably peaceful and have included a far wider ranger of ages and political views as ordinary people unaffliated with any political group have come to hear and share with others their own experiences.

Tacitus updated for modern economic realities.

As Greece slides further into an economic downturn that matches the very worst period of the Great Depression, the country's creditors and and the domestic political elite talk of salvation, prosperity and growth.

Thousands took to the streets of Thessaloniki, Greece for the latest in a series of protests aimed at overturning government plans to introduce yet more austerity measures.

Look at the catastrophe unfolding in our once great country and this stooge obama does NOTHING! HE DOESN't even HAVE a PLAN! He's hiding in his playhouse! SHITCAN THIS BUM ASAP!

22 people were arrested in a dawn raid on the Epiviosi (Survival) autonomous shelter which had been set up the previous month in an abandoned hospital in the centre of the northern port city of Thessaloniki. Just two weeks before Christmas the 36 residents have lost not just their home but most of their possessions as workmen sealed the building shut.

Previously, I wrote;

"Somehow I doubt if this kitchen is going to receive a Michelin star any time soon but in its way it is a small miracle, just a couple of months ago this was an just another empty room in a gutted building that used to be the Agios Pavlos (St Paul's) hospital in the centre of Greece's second largest city, Thessaloniki. As the country enters it's fifth year of recession and unemployment continues to rocket a growing number of people have been forced onto the streets. While no official figures exist for Thessaloniki, authorities in Athens report that 25,000 people there spend their nights sleeping rough.

However, amidst all the stories of suffering and despair a small group has turned a shell of a building into a viable living space, offering 28 people the chance to get off the streets. When I first entered the building, just days after activists had broken through the chained front doors ( see here www.flickr.com/photos/teacherdudebbq2/6233732675/ ) I thought that they were crazy to even contemplate turning the five story block into a place where people could live. Massive holes in the roof, dozens of missing or smashed windows, entire exterior wall missing meant that even in daytime the place was uncomfortably cold.

Yet, my pessimism has turned out to be misplaced and now where there had been gutted rooms, a kitchen and dinning area have been created, in the upper floors kids from the neighbourhood use the space for band practice and many of the rooms have been turned into dorm style rooms.

However, problems still remain as there have been conflicts between residents over the use of drugs and alcohol leading to at least one eviction. While I was there a window was being replaced after it had been smashed by angry drug user unhappy with fellow residents insistence that drugs had no place in their space."

In Athens, Thessaloniki, patra and many other cities against Greece angry protsters gathered to show their opposition to the latest round of austerity measures and a political system widely reviled for being corrupt and ineffectual.

With demonstrations now entering their third week prime ministerGiorgos Papanderou is fighting a losing battle to push through legislation being demanded by Greece's creditors in return for further loan guarantees. However, resistance to the package of wage cuts, public spending reduction and privatisation has stirred up a popular movement unprecedented in modern greek political history.

Disavowing links with all established political parties Greece's Los Indignados movement has sprung up overnight using Facebook, internet and blogs and been able to bring hundreds of thousands of previously disenchanted Greeks into the political arena, setting off a political crisis the current administration is at a loss to handle.

In Catalonia these masks seen often on demonstrations, currently reference Artur Mas, the politically liberal President of Catalonia, voted into office in December 2010 after a landslide victory. As Catalonia has a fierce identity beyond Spain and Spanish politics, he is thought by some/many (depending on your own position and to whom you talk) to have betrayed the people of Catalonia by pursuing the position on debt management taken by the Spanish Government, which is resulting in hospital closures, public sector pension cuts, very high youth unemployment, and high unemployment generally.
