In a recent poll, in association with eZonomics.com, we asked "What do you think is the biggest cause of financial difficulties?".

We wanted to find out whether there was a perception in the wider population that problem debt is fuelled by reckless credit card spending. The results of the poll, shown in light green in the graphic, show that this belief is the case.

However the perception that spending too much in the shops – of overspending or "going wild in the aisles" – is the biggest cause of financial difficulties is too simplistic.

The reality, shown in dark green, is that nearly half of all debt problems we counsel on are actually caused by work issues such as redundancy, reduced working hours or a pay cut. 'Life issues', such as divorce, bereavement and illness, is another common cause of debt. Overspending is the main cause of debt in only 10% of cases.

Housing Minister Nelson McCausland has announced over £500,000 funding for the Mortgage Debt Advice Service.

Today’s funding will ensure the continuation of the advice service delivered by Housing Rights Service, until March 2015, which until now was being piloted. More than 1,500 people have been given advice from the Service since it was launched.

Speaking during a visit to the Housing Rights Service the Minister said: “Anyone who thinks they may be at risk of losing their home because of debt must take action immediately. Help and advice is available. Repossession should only ever be the very last resort. It's vitally important that those facing the risk of repossession seek urgent independent advice and speak to their lender to avoid losing their home and explore the options that are available. “

Service advisors are available to help homeowners to address mortgage payment and debt problems which threaten their ability to remain in their homes. Specialist advisors can also provide advice and representation to enable individuals to remain in their home or, in cases where this is not feasible, assist them to explore alternative housing options.

Minister McCausland also welcomed innovative improvements to the Service: “Exploiting technology to provide alternative forms of access to this service, such as the online virtual advisor, as well as the extended contact hours to 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, provides greater flexibility for those facing mortgage difficulties to take advantage of the advice services on offer.”

There is also a dedicated Service telephone number on 0300 323 0310 and a specific Mortgage Debt and Repossession portal at www.housingadviceNI.org.

Peter McMahon, Service manager said: "This funding shows the Department's commitment to assisting people struggling with housing debt. Our experience of delivering the pilot service has demonstrated that the earlier people seek free independent advice the more options are available. However, it really is never too late to get help and, if court proceedings have been initiated, it is vital to attend. Even at this stage repossession is not inevitable

You had been warned! Credit card debts could be a vicious cycle and could put you stuck in a marsh or quicksand.

DUP MEP Diane Dodds has stressed the importance of raising awareness of professional money advice services after launching her latest publication, 'Managing Debt: Signposts to help', at the Dunanney Centre in Rathcoole.

The guide is the fifth in a series of publications written by the MEP to support communities across Northern Ireland since being elected in 2009.

Commenting after the launch, Mrs. Dodds said:

‘‘Sadly, the issue of debt is one that is becoming more and more relevant to society in Northern Ireland. It is affecting many households, including older people, single parents and those who are encountering money problems due to ill-health.

I would therefore like to thank the representatives from many local advice charities and organisations, including the Citizens Advice Bureau, Advice NI, and Bryson Energy, who came to the launch of my latest publication as an MEP - 'Managing Debt: Signposts to help'.

My new directory aims to direct affected families to the professional support that they need to tackle their debt, and to secure a better and brighter future. The guide provides details of over 40 local debt advice charities and sources of government assistance. It also contains a step-by-step guide on how to prioritise debt, how to budget and how to apply for benefits.

I would like to thank Mrs Pat Hutchinson MBE of Citizens Advice in Newtownabbey for her support in the preparation of this initiative, as well as the Dunanney Centre in Rathcoole for hosting the launch. I also thank my colleague, the Minister for Social Development, Nelson McCausland MLA, for coming along to address those in attendance.

We in the DUP are committed to raising awareness of the many tools and support services that are out there for local people experiencing financial difficulties. We are in touch with our community, and will continue to tackle their needs with resources such as this.”
