Diese Zugleistung war der Grund für unsere Anreise; rechtzeitiges Erscheinen am Set führt schließlich zu mehr Möglichkeiten für die finale Findung des Motivs. Am Ende gelang das Bild wie gezeigt. Aber in den Notizen vom Vortag findet sich leider kein Hinweis auf unsere Übernachtung. Man sollte besser wirklich alles aufschreiben!

After yesterday's post we return to standard railway topics, however still remaining near the cement plant "Kujawy" and the huge limestone mine. The facility contains one more curiosity, besides the previously mentioned cable car railway.
Me and Jarek have visited the station Wapienno a couple of years back and there was one thing I very vividly remembered from that trip. We were trying to find our way around the place to the station and searching for spots to photograph the limestone shuttle to Inowrocław. In doing so, we passed many places where a deteriorated track cut the street, and it was accompanied by a couple of lonely standing metal pylons. They very much looked like catenary poles, but what could they be doing here? I just thought they were taken from some tram network or used as lighting poles.
I later had gone on to disregard the topic completely, but a new breakthrough happened a few months back, when me and my friends were investigating the history and railway network of the Dębiec mining and metallurgical plant. We found it while browsing Open Railway Map, as it had an extensive railway network and was hidden deep in the forests of central Poland. We dug very deep in the internet and finally, in some remote corner of the plant's web page we found a picture gallery, showing the former glory of the local railways. Our jaws dropped in amazement, as we saw the network... electrified. Not only that, it featured pictures of the locomotives working there. They were the popular "Crocodiles" of the EL2 series from Hennigsdorf. "No way", we thought, "the locomotives only worked in the lignite mines", and quickly rushed to the EL2's Polish wikipedia page. There it was. "Apart from the lignite mine in Konin, the locomotives were delivered to the lignite mine in Adamów, the Dębiec plant and... the cement plant "Kujawy" in Wapienno". That's when I got a flashback from our previous trip and everything clicked. I knew I had to come back here.
I had to spend a couple more days, studying the cement factory's extensive railway network. By digging for a few more hours I found only a few pictures here aswell as one on Facebook which intrigued me even more. There I could read the comments of the former workers, which were very valuable.
The catenary, which covered the entirety of the complex - from Wapienno to Piechcin, used to look very crude. The wires were hanging from supports resembling those used on tram networks and the cables were very loose. Consequently, the pylons were placed frequently - between 25 and 30 meters apart, a third of the standard distance on normal railways. The catenary reached very remote places of the facility and spanned a total length - from my cude calculations - of around 9 kilometers. The remains of the catenary pylons are still there in many places and they fulfill the role of lighting poles nowadays, but wherever you see thin, long shadows, separated 30 meters from eachother. on aerial images, you can be sure that this was a part of the catenary.
This is exactly what we see on this picture. Further back there was a much more beautiful frame to be taken, but I really wanted to capture the remains of the catenary. Another reason for choosing this place is to talk about a now non-existant branch to the station in Piechcin (this picture shows the place where it used to be - the diagonal dirt path heading off into a curve and then later into the plant), which would have constituted a second track (to the right) in this very place. Catenary supports which we found lead me to believe that it also used to be electrified. Therefore PKP had two dropoff/pickup spots for trains to/from the mine and cement plant - in Piechcin and Wapienno. The branch also used to transport forced laborers from the very shortly lived prison camp in Piechcin (1950-1956) to the quarry near Bielawy.
On the picture is SM42-2083, heading to the place I call Masherbrum, which I will talk about tommorow. Congratulations if you managed to read through all this :D, I had no idea the text I had written would be so long. But when there is so much to discover... as far as I know, nobody had taken photographs of this place before me, because everyone always goes to the station Wapienno and chases the limestone shuttle to Inowrocław.

Einer meiner unzähligen Besuche in Posen, der neuen Heimat für viele der klassischen DÜWAG-Gelenkwagen der Rheinbahn, brachte am 29. Juli 2014 u.a. dieses Foto hervor. Damals konnte ich den GT8 688 im Einsatz auf der Linie 9 nach Dębiec nahe der Haltestelle Rynek Wildecki aufnehmen. Zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme brachte es der Wagen bereits auf 49 Dienstjahre. Ausgemustert wurde er erst 2019 nach 54 Jahren im Dienst. Der GT8 688 wurde 1965 von der DÜWAG noch als GT6 gebaut und erhielt bei der Rheinbahn die Wagennummer 2602. Im Jahr 1974 wurde dieser GT6 mit einem zusätzlichen Mittelteil sowie einem zusätzlichen Laufdrehgestell zum GT8 2752 erweitert und schließlich 2003 an die MPK Poznań abgegeben.
Die Altstadt von Posen präsentiert sich im Jahr 2023 als eine einzige, riesige Baustelle. Auch viele Straßenbahnlinien sind unterbrochen bzw. eingestellt. Auch die Linie 9 endet von Osten aus in einem Wendedreieck am zentralen Marcinkowskiego. Solaris Tramino 551 ist am plac Wiosny Ludów bereits auf dem Rückweg nach Dębiec.

Die Hühner gackern, die Hunde bellen, die Wäsche flattert im Frühlingslüftchen und ganz nebenbei belebt interessanter Eisenbahnbetrieb die Szenerie. Das nenn ich Urlaub! Zugegeben, auch das Polen auf dem Land hat sich verändert und das unverbaute abgelegene Gehöft am Gleis muß gesucht werden. In Dębiec wurden wir fündig und blieben den ganzen Nachmittag. Mit dem Lauf der Sonne ergaben sich viele Möglichkeiten. Unter den vielen privaten Operateuren stach PMT an diesem Tag heraus und das hatte einen Grund. Das für die Kupferhütte in Legnica abgebaute Erz aus Polkowice nimmt normalerweise den direkten Weg über Lubin nach Legnica. Mehrer Monate war das wegen Gleisbau nicht möglich und die Rohstoffversorgung mußte im Umweg über Wroclaw abgewickelt werden. Die beiden PMT eigenen 3E/1 waren auch im Umleitungsverkehr eingebunden. Auf dem Bild sehen wir PMT 3E/1M-201 dabei handelt es sich um die ehem. PKP ET21 464 die bei PaFaWag in Wroclaw 1965 gebaut wurde.
MPK Poznań tram 907 pulls up at the Pasieka stop on Winogrady, with a route 19 service from Połabska to Dębiec PKM.
This tram was the first we saw wearing this livery rather than Poznań green (I later saw at least one other), and it was very convenient that it followed our route 7 tram from the terminus at Połabska and the sun angle was correct for a photo at the point we changed to go back the other way (to the route 3 and 10 terminus at Błażeja). The tram is one of six Duewag GT8ZR trams bought from Frankfurt am Main in 2005, these being 901 and 903 to 907 in that company's fleet, numbers which were retained after their sale. However, internet sources suggest that only 903, 904 and 907 remained in service in Poznań in April 2025, the other three having been taken out of traffic in February 2020. They were all new in 1969.

Passengers commuting home on the 17:38 service from Poznań to Wolsztyn head off the platform at Stęszew, probably looking forward to the comfort of a modern diesel multiple unit in a few days time. Ol49-59, with one headlight out of alignment and pointing skyward, erupts in a cloud of steam upon its late departure from Stęszew, its delay due to reduced track availability in the Debiec area of Poznań as the main line there is under modernisation with new electrification masts, wires and trackwork.

I think the leak got on this one later when this little cutie accidentally sat on my Holga and dislodged the back.
Tom Debiec's toy camera presentation: Holga 120 CFN. Kodak Portra 400vc. My daughter accidentally sat on the camera and partially opened the film compartment a little while after this shot was taken. The resulting leak made this shot so much cooler.
With the sun back out after a heavy shower Konstal type 105N trams 202+201 are seen at Rondo Kaponiera on the Poznań tramway with a route 2 service from Ogrody to Dębiec.
At the beginning of June a professional bike race took place in my city. I went out with my Holgas to capture the high speed action. I positioned myself on this corner so when the racers came around they would be just several feet from my head. The air was pushing past me but I held my ground while keeping enough distance from the racers. This is the first of the exposures that I developed and scanned.
The shutter on my Holga was held open for 20+ seconds. This is a low-res scan of the 8x8 print made in a wet darkroom. The film is Ilford Delta 3200.
Class ED72Ac is really not a beauty, but sometimes it's the only train that shows up. But it's clean and shiny and together with the farm buildings and the interesting clouds, it forms an image worth to be shown.

No.30 was a Konstal type 102N tram built in the early 1970's and MPK the Poznań Tramway Company operated a fleet of 71 until secondhand trams from Amsterdam started to see this type withdrawn in the mid 1990's.
Here no.30 is approaching the Kosińskiego stop with a route 9 service from Dębiec to Piatkowska this route being a north - south traversal of the city.

This is part of a series of experiments I did from the same location varying shutter speed (putting the Holga on B) and playing with overexposure. This is similar to the photo called "Bike Race". It has that great shadow under the bike and a feeling of speed. The riders passed very close to my head as they went around the corner at more than 25 miles per hour.
In the falling snow on 4th December 2013 two passengers, one sheltering on the subway steps, wait for the 18:46 arrival at Grodzisk Wielkopolka, the 17:38 'commuter train' from Pozan to Wolsztyn. The driver and fireman will have worked extremely hard between the ten intermediate station stops so far to make up lost time as a result of temporary single line working on the busy electrified main line in Poznan-Debiec area, and a two-minute late arrival was extremely credible under the circumstances.

Duewag GT8ZR #904 tnie jako skrócona do Gwarnej linia 9 przez Park Sołacki - w tle wiadukt PST.
Z powodu remontu ul. Święty Marcin, 9 została na przełomie 2017 i 2018r. skrócona i miała pętlę uliczną z końcowym przystankiem Gwarna, zaś z drugiej strony miasta jeździła linia 29 Dębiec-Plac Wiosny Ludów (dwukierunkowa).

One of the twin set Konstal type 105N trams built between 1973-79 with running numbers 102+101 are seen in Czerwca 1956 street shortly after departing the Pamiątkowa stop with a route 2 service from Ogrody to Dębiec. MPK the operator of Poznań Tramway had a fleet of 260 of these trams which tended to operate in numerical pairs.
At the time of the photo, 111Ed-018 was just two years old. The owner is Rail Capital Partners Sp.z.o.o. and the operator of the train pictured was Captrain Polska, which had rented the locomotive. The photo was taken in the town of Dębiec. We needed a lot of time and a bit of luck to get a decent photo.

Tom Debiec's toy camera presentation: Smena 8m. Kodak elitechrome 100, cross-processed. Just a cool example of the fun to be had with a cheap camera. We were in a jewelry store and my son took the camera and snapped a shot of a flat-screen TV that was playing ads for watches and stuff. I guess I forgot to advance the film before taking the next shot and this was the result.
I really admire the work of Tom Debiec. Please check out the shots he did capturing motion with a Holga. Those works inspired these attempts.
