Eastern Scheldt Storm Surge Barrier…

Oosterscheldekering / De Banjaard Beach.

The Oosterscheldekering (Eastern Scheldt storm surge barrier) is another storm surge barrier located between the islands Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland in the Netherlands.

It is the largest of the 13 Delta Works constructions, the most expensive and the most difficult to build.

The nine-kilometre-long Oosterscheldekering was initially designed, and partly built, as a closed dam, but after public protest, huge sluice-gate-type doors were installed in the remaining four kilometers. These doors are normally open, but can be closed under adverse weather conditions.

In this way, the saltwater marine life behind the dam is preserved and fishing can continue, while the land behind the dam is safe from the water.

Since its opening in 1986, the dam has been closed twenty-five times due to water levels exceeding or being predicted to exceed the three meters.

The dam is designed to last more than 200 years.

We arrived in De Banjaard today. Our first walk took us to the beach (of course). On our way back from a late lunch and a cold beer I could easily zoom in to Neeltje Jans...

Obviously inspired by the amazing work of Joel (Boy_Wonder).

I wanted to try something like this for a long time :)

I'm going back home tomorrow :(

"It is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea--whether it is to sail or to watch it--we are going back from whence we came."

―John F. Kennedy

I am in the Netherlands now and this morning I went to the beach and took some photos. (:

“Does it break my heart, of course, every moment of every day, into more pieces than my heart was made of, I never thought of myself as quiet, much less silent, I never thought about things at all, everything changed, the distance that wedged itself between me and my happiness wasn't the world, it wasn't the bombs and burning buildings, it was me, my thinking, the cancer of never letting go, is ignorance bliss, I don't know, but it's so painful to think, and tell me, what did thinking ever do for me, to what great place did thinking ever bring me? I think and think and think, I've thought myself out of happiness one million times, but never once into it.”

― Jonathan Safran Foer, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

I will stop being inactive on Flickr soon! :)

Neeltje Jans is an artificial and construction island of the Netherlands, in the province of Zeeland, situated between the former islands of North Beveland and Schouwen, on the Eastern Scheldt. Its area is about 285 ha. The island belongs to the municipality of Veere.

It was named after a nearby sandbar named after the goddess Nehalennia.

It was created during the construction of the Oosterscheldekering, between 1969 and 1986. It now hosts an information center on the work of the Delta plan. 65 concrete pylons were needed at the dam, 66 were built in case one of them was defective which was not the case. The one that was built in surplus is now used for rock climbing.

It has become a natural monument and is part of the Oosterschelde National Park.
