~~~"There's a Hole in My Bucket" (or "...in the Bucket") is a children's song, based on a dialogue between two characters, called Henry and Liza, about a leaky bucket. The song describes a deadlock situation: Henry has a leaky bucket, and Liza tells him to repair it. To fix the leaky bucket, he needs straw. To cut the straw, he needs an axe. To sharpen the axe, he needs to wet the sharpening stone. To wet the stone, he needs water. But to fetch water, he needs the bucket, which has a hole in it.~~~ - WiKi
Happy weekend!
What the town of Ypres was for the British, the Yzer was to the Belgians.
The Yzer is the only river in Belgium that flows into the North-Sea and the basin is surrounded by lowlands.
After several attacks by the German Army, known as the battle of the Yzer, there was fierce fighting for possesion of the Diksmuide-Nieuwpoort railway embankment.
However, the Belgian and French army managed to push back the German army further and further.
In the night of 29 to 30 october, the sea locks in the coastal town of Nieuwpoort were opened to ward off new attacks by the German army and during flood the entire vast polder was flooded.When the polder had turned into an immense and inaccessible expanse of water, the German army reached a stalemate.
The front on the Yzer was deadlocked and the German emporer left the Yser front discouraged, because he had not succeeded in capturing the sea ports of Nieuwpoort and Zeebrugge.
The armies dug into trenches and bombarded each other constantly, gaining not any meter ground.
The cities of Ramskapelle, Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide were incessantly taken under heavy artillery fire and were thus shot to rubble.
Among other things, the German super gun "Langer Max" was used for this heavy bombings.
Everything in the battle of the Yzer shows also insanity and lack of strategic insight because it was abandantly clear that the seaports were not to be captured in any way!
40.000 Belgians and 15.000 French soldiers lost their lives on the Yzer front.
What we see in the picture is a command post of a battery of howitsers of the Belgian army that was then in the middle of the indunation.
On the roof of the bunker lie the so-called "Vaderlanderkes", jute sacks filled with sand an clay that offered some protection against shell impacts.
It was an extremely comfortable hiding place at a good distance from the front with sleeping accomodation and electric supply, a luxury that the average front soldier could not claim....
There are moments in life, where You simply take the wrong turn. This is absolutely normal and unproblematic. After a while, at the end of the trail, you get stuck in a deadlock ore you find yourself somewhere you never wanted to be. In a situation like this I wish you a healthy amount of humbleness to admit to yourself this mistake and enough courage to make a turnround possible. There is always a way back to your own path even if you have to turn yourself sometimes upside down.
Es gibt Momente im Leben, da biegst du einfach in die falsche Richtung ab. Das ist völlig natürlich und unproblematisch. Nach einer Weile kommst ans Ende des Weges und steckst in einer Sackgasse fest oder findest dich in einer Gegend wieder, in die du nie wolltest. In einer Situation wie dieser wünsche ich Dir ein gesundes Maß an Demut um dir selbst deinen Irrtum einzugestehen sowie ausreichend Mut um dir die Umkehr zu ermöglichen. Es gibt immer einen Weg zurück auf deinen Pfad, auch wenn du dich dafür manchmal auf den Kopf stellen musst.
Humanity seems to be in a deadlock and has lost its way through hate. Sadly, we don't have leaders who are strong enough to negotiate and find solutions, and painfully, emotions seem to be taking over rather than rationality. We are stronger than this and must find our way back to reality.
There is no excuse not to have gun control. Violence only begets violence and it appears that the USA is out of control. No other country has as many deaths through violence as we do. We have to get back in control for the sake of our children and for our own sanity.
Thank you for your kind visit. Have a beautiful day and spread love and kindness! ❤️❤️❤️
For a while I have been struggling of how I will go on with my photography journey. There seems to be sort of a ''deadlock'' that does not go where I wish it should go, or I feel stucked in a maze where no door seem to exist..Not only in my hobby but in my real life I feel the same too..I do not wish to say goodbye yet; but I think I need to take a Break..I will still be here-following your lovely works, but it seems that I will not share something for a while; nor I may not be taking any photos for a while either..
I wish to close the programme with an image taken with Oleks-Alexandra, in the name of the all models-who supported me during my shootings:))
Just want to thank you all:))
Two male Blackbuck (Antilope cervicapra) were trying their strengths against each other in a deadlock position with their horns. The something very special about the composition is that the other two males in the backdrop were positioned symmetrically to judge out the outcome of their dominance hierarchy. The natural backdrop here is perfect for this fighting males composition. Pics was taken from Tal Chhapar Sanctuary in Rajasthan, India.
1. A state of inaction or neutralization resulting from the opposition of equally powerful uncompromising persons or factions
2. A situation in which no progress can be made
Note:
Frozen waves! are not waves but look alike created by icebreaker navigation causing the ice to be pushed down which in turn causes the ice to split and break off in chunks. These chunks when covered by blown snow look like waves.
A scene from a shoot with a Lebanese model, who demanded a fashion shoot for her portfolio and of course I did not. Instead I tried to shoot in my own style: dark, hopeless, in a sort of a ''deadlock''. It is pretty bad that the industry is dominated with Slavic models-and we are used to shoot and watch them- however we need (or we should have the possibiliity) to shoot with other ethnic models as well-as their expression, face structure is different. Hope that more models -other than Slavics- will be around..
Here the problem is for both sides- for me to a shoot a different ethnic person and for the viewer to adopt. We are used to see the Slavics so much, a different face or culture does not easily catch up our attention- which is sort of ''racist''
La Thuile is for the most part boringly well kept. There is the odd derelict building which sticks out like a sore thumb, including this old bar slap in the centre. Apparently corrosive family disputes over ownership and upkeep are fairly common and the buildings fall down while the deadlocks last for generations.
A few days ago, the above art work appeared overnight on an outside wall of Reading Prison which has stood empty since it closed at the end of 2013. There was immediate speculation it was the work of the street artist Banksy whose identity has never been confirmed despite the fact his numerous works have appeared at various locations over a long period of years.
The paintings often form a social message and can be controversial. Reading Prison is very much a controversial place – it is owned by the Ministry of Justice who have been trying to dispose of it for the last 7 years. For them one of the problems is the property is designated a grade II listed building which means it cannot be demolished or substantially altered without prior consent from the Local Authority – Reading Borough Council. There have been calls for it to be used as a public amenity such as a theatre or arts facility and a deal to redevelop it has fallen through so in effect there has been little or no progress for 7 years.
Yesterday Banksy confirmed it was his art work although he did not shed any light on who the figure was supposed to be. Much of the local view is that it is a representation of Oscar Wilde, the Victorian actor, writer and poet who was incarcerated there from 1895 to 1897 – probably the prisons main claim to fame.
It is questionable as to whether the painting helps or hinders the current deadlock although it has provided some amusement for local residents in what is otherwise a depressing time!
Grateful thanks to everyone who has looked at my photostream and commented and/or faved this photograph. Your interest is very much appreciated.
Most important of all, continue to keep safe during these uncertain times!
I don't think a single feature of this building uses a shape other than squares and rectangles....!
This building, 40 Thorndike, used to be a local jail infamous for asbestos and mold contamination. It was closed down long ago, but due to political deadlock, the decontamination took over a decade. Thankfully, it finally opened back up a few months ago, completely remodeled as a combined office & commercial building.
Жизнь может быть тяжелой, и бывают моменты, когда кажется, что мир против нас. Война,уныние, разочарование и плохие новости могут заставить нас чувствовать себя побежденными. Но даже в самые мрачные времена всегда есть ВЕРА и НАДЕЖДА в ПОБЕДУ. Но « одно в жизни остается неизменным - за каждой ночью всегда придет рассвет».Эту народную мудрость я часто поторяю себе в тупиковых ситуациях. И выход ,как правило, находится , надо толко перетерпеть боль и приложть максимум усилия для достижения цели , не сбиваясь с выбранного курса. Мы должны продолжать бороться и работать над позитивными изменениями, даже когда прогресс кажется медленным или невозможным.
Быть оптимистом сложно, но это мощное оружие, котороя может помочь нам преодолеть даже самые сложные обстоятельства и приблизить нашу Победу над врагами и собой.
Life can be hard and there are times when it seems like the world is against us. War, discouragement, disappointment and bad news can make us feel defeated. But even in the darkest times there is always FAITH and HOPE in VICTORY. But “one thing in life remains unchanged - every night will always come dawn.” I often repeat this folk wisdom to myself in deadlock situations. And the way out, as a rule, is found, you just have to endure the pain and make every effort to achieve the goal, without straying from the chosen course. We must continue to fight and work for positive change, even when progress seems slow or impossible.
Being an optimist is difficult, but it is a powerful weapon that can help us overcome even the most difficult circumstances and bring our Victory over our enemies and ourselves closer.
Tibetan name Wha or Wamo, ཝ། .
The Tibetan Sand Fox is one of the smaller fox species. It has thick, soft fur that protects it from the winds of the high mountains, with a dense undercoat that is brown to rusty yellow in color. The fur on the upper flanks is rusty, whereas the lower flanks and rump is colored gray, sometimes producing the illusion of a line along the animal's flank. The lower part of its ruff, as well as its throat, chest, and abdominal region is white. Small black patches on the shoulders set off the white chest.The tip of the tail is white. Adult Tibetan foxes are 60 to 70 centimetres (24 to 28 in) from head to body (juveniles are somewhat smaller) and a tail length of 29 to 40 centimetres (11 to 16 in). Weights of adults are usually 4 to 5.5 kilograms (8.8 to 12 lb).
The Tibetan Sand Fox has a unique face that appears square; this is an illusion created by its large ruff. As seen in the Planet Earth episode "Great Plains", the fox keeps its body stiff and its head level when stalking.
The Hundred Years' War was in its 19th year with very little progress for the English and French. This was largely due to the outbreak of the Black Death or the bubonic plague in Europe beginning in 1348, two years after the English victory at Crecy. After the plague had abated in the 1350s, both sides were ready for war once again. Beginning in 1355, the son of King Edward III of England, Edward "the Black Prince", would begin a "grand chevauchee" of Southern France, using English territory in Gascony as a base. It was a large-scale raid carried out by Edward and his Anglo-Gascon forces against various French cities, towns, and villages to inflict as much damaged as possible. The French would avoid a large-scale battle due to fears of another Crecy.
The Black Prince would resume raiding in 1356. He would then find himself outflanked by the massive army of the French King, Jean II. The Anglo-Gascons would find themselves on a small, wooded hill. The French army numbered around 11,000 men, while the Anglo-Gascon army numbered around 6,000 men. These armies were much smaller than previous medieval battles due to the plague. Negotiations would ensue as both sides did not really want another battle as the French did not want another Crecy, and the English were outnumbered 2 to 1. However, they would breakdown as Jean's demand of unconditional surrender was unacceptable.
The battle would begin much like Crecy with waves of the French army charging towards the Anglo-Gascon force, only to be cut down by longbowmen. This would repeat itself three times over until Jean II decided to advance with his army, consisting of crossbowmen and men-at-arms. He would raise the Oriflamme banner, meaning that no prisoners were to be taken. The English longbowmen would fire until some ran out of arrows and would join in the fight. Both sides would become deadlocked, until Jean III de Grailly, would decide to outflank the French left with a cavalry force. He would raise the banner of St George and charge into the French rear. The same process would repeat on the French right. The French army was devastated, and many would flee the battlefield. Jean II would be taken prisoner, along with one of his sons.
Negotiations to end the war and Jean's ransom would drag out for the next 4 years until the ratification of the Treaty of Bretigny in 1360. England was granted all of Aquitaine that once belonged to the English crown before it was seized by France a century earlier. The English would renounce their claims to the French crown and Jean's ransom would also be paid off. However, hostilities would resume a decade later. Afterall, it's the Hundred Years' War and not the Twenty Years' War for a reason.
