A walk in the park

A visit to an area I have wanted to see for a long time. I have seen this area from across bays but never had I visited until yesterday. This area is a beach called Tan Ddinas. 'Tan' has the Welsh meaning 'under', Tan Ddinas being the name of a farm above the bay. The remains of the buildings you see in the background are the remnants of an old limestone quarry that was operated here where the quarried stone would then be loaded onto ships via a jetty that has long gone. The quarry is called Tan Ddinas quarry and also has a Welsh name of Carreg Onnen (Ash rock). The quarry was closed in 1919 however reopened sometime in the early 1950's closing again in the late 1950's. I've attached links for you to visit if interested. This driftwood had been thrown to a high level on the beach just waiting for the next high tide to grab it and take it on its next journey to who knows where.

A surprise discovery in the middle of our capital city (Cardiff) which reminded me of the character of Blodeuwedd ('flower face'); according to her tale in the mediaeval collection, 'Y Mabinogi', she was created out of flowers and wildflowers sprang up in a trail behind her wherever she walked... Both wild and innocent she is cast as a very early 'femme fatale'

At Pontneddfechan {pronounced pontneethvorn} at the head of the Neath Valley, the start of the Waterfalls Trail.

(Welsh) Ddinas {pronounced theenass} = Brythonic 'city' or 'fortification'. Such a settlement existed atop this peak.

The site is associated with Arthurian legend and has a cave known as "Arthur's Cave".

"Ganwyd Syr David James James yn Llundain yn 1887 lle’r oedd y teulu yn cynnal busnes llaeth yn ardal Westminster. Bu’r blynyddoedd cynnar i'w frawd ac yntau yn gyfnod o iechyd bregus ac, o ganlyniad, penderfynodd y teulu symud yn ôl i Geredigion i’r lle yr oeddent wedi ymfudo ohono rai blynyddoedd ynghynt. Sefydlwyd cartref newydd ym Mhantyfedwen, tŷ ar gyrion pentref Pontrhydfendigaid. Ond, oherwydd trafferthion busnes yn Llundain, dychwelodd David James a'i dad i'r ddinas, a Llundain wedyn fu’n gartref parhaol i Syr David ac yn bencadlys i'w ddiddordebau busnes am weddill ei fywyd.

Roedd ei ddiddordebau busnes yn niferus ac yn amrywiol iawn, yn cynnwys llaeth, gwenith, bragu a bwydydd anifeiliaid. Ond cofir ef yn bennaf am ei ymwneud â sinemâu. Mentrodd i'r maes hwn yn 1920 wrth agor y 'super cinema' cyntaf yn Llundain (y Palmadium yn ardal Palmers Green) gyda lle i eistedd mwy na 2,000 o bobl. Ar un adeg, roedd yn berchennog ar dair ar ddeg o sinemâu, ac mae’n debyg mai’r mwyaf adnabyddus ohonynt oedd Stiwdio 1 a 2 yn Oxford Street.

Priododd Syr David â Grace Stevens o Faversham. Efallai mai’r ffaith na chawsant blant oedd un o’r rhesymau paham yr oedd Syr David yn awyddus i rannu ei gyfoeth gyda phobl Cymru. Yn ystod ei fywyd, cyfrannodd yn hael at nifer o achosion crefyddol ac addysgiadol. Yr oedd, yn ei flynyddoedd cynnar, wedi ystyried mentro i'r weinidogaeth Gristnogol, ac nid yw’n syndod, felly, iddo roi blaenoriaeth i gefnogi unigolion oedd am fod yn weinidogion, i eglwysi lleol, i geisio gwella cyflogau a phensiynau gweinidogion a hybu mwy o waith eciwmenaidd. Yn y cyswllt hwn, ymdrechodd yn galed i ddod a'r enwadau yng Nghymru at ei gilydd. Roedd hefyd o'r farn fod gan Gymru lawer gormod o adeiladau eglwysig a bod angen mwy o resymoli a rhannu. Proffwyd yn wir!

O ganlyniad i’w haelioni, dyfarnwyd iddo nifer o anrhydeddau. Derbyniodd radd LL D er anrhydedd gan Brifysgol Cymru yn 1957, fe’i gwnaed yn farchog yn 1959, a derbyniodd Ryddid Bwrdeistref Aberystwyth yn 1964.

Pan sefydlwyd yr Ymddiriedolaeth gyntaf yn 1957 roedd Syr David yn glir ei weledigaeth mai pobl Cymru oedd i elwa. Gweinyddwyd yr Ymddiriedolaeth am y ddeng mlynedd gyntaf o'i swyddfeydd yn Llundain. Ond gwelodd hyn fel rhywfaint o baradocs, a bu wrthi yn chwilio am safle priodol yn Aberystwyth ar gyfer swyddfeydd newydd. Daeth o hyd i leoliad yn Stryd y Farchnad a chwaraeodd ran amlwg yn y broses o gynllunio ar gyfer yr adeilad newydd. Ond bu farw yn 1967 ychydig fisoedd cyn agoriad swyddogol y swyddfeydd yn 1968. Mae'r adeilad a gynllunwyd gan Syr David, ac a ariannwyd ganddo, yn gartref i waith yr Ymddiriedolaeth hyd heddiw."

"Sir David James James was born in London in 1887 where his parents ran a milk business in the Westminster area. His poor health and, more particularly that of his younger brother, during their childhood years prompted the family to move back to Cardiganshire from where they had migrated some years earlier. They established themselves at Pantyfedwen which is located on the outskirts of Pontrhydfendigaid. But business difficulties in London prompted the young David James and his father to return to London which then became Sir David's home and the base of his business activities for much of the rest of his life.

His business interests were many and varied. They included milk, grain, brewing and animal foodstuffs. But he is probably best remembered for his involvement with cinemas. He entered the cinema business in 1920 when he opened London's first Super Cinema (the Palmadium in Palmers Green) with a seating capacity in excess of 2,000. At his peak of involvement he owned thirteen such cinemas, the most well known of which were Studios 1 and 2 in Oxford Street.

His marriage to Grace Stevens of Faversham was not blessed with children and this is perhaps one reason why he was determined to share his wealth with the people of Wales. During his lifetime he bestowed substantial gifts on a great variety of religious and educational causes. In his formative years he had thought of entering the Christian ministry and it is no surprise, therefore, that his generosity gave pride of place to those who wanted to become ministers of religion, to church buildings, to improving the salaries and pensions of the clergy and to fostering a greater level of ecumenical work. In this respect he campaigned actively to try and bring the different denominations in Wales to work more closely together. He also argued that Wales had far too many places of worship and that there needed to be a rationalisation and sharing of church buildings. Something of a prophet!

In response to his great generosity, David James received many accolades. These included an honorary LL.D degree from the University of Wales in1957, a knighthood in 1959, and the Freedom of the Borough of Aberystwyth in 1964.

When Sir David established the first of his charitable trusts in 1957, he was determined that the income be used solely for the benefit of Wales. For the first ten years of its life the charitable trust was administered from his business offices in London. He saw this as something of a paradox and he set about seeking a suitable site for a new suite of offices in Aberystwyth. Having located a site in Market Street, he was closely involved in the planning of the new building but, sadly, he died in 1967 shortly before the new offices were officially opened in 1968. The building which he planned and financed continues to be the Foundation's home today.

Sir David never officially retired from business life but towards the end of his life the scale of his involvement was much reduced. Lady Grace and Sir David spent most of their final years at Sutton Hall in Barcombe, Sussex, but they continued to make periodic visits to London and Wales. Lady Grace James died in 1965."

In the 12th century, the grounds of the park became the property of the Lokentaz.

Thanks to an exchange of land, in the 1380s it became the property of Duke Yann / Jean IV.

After the union of Brittany with France, it became the property of the kings of France, who then left it to the captains and governors of the city.

In 1569 a part of the land was ceded to the Sant-Nikolaz / Saint-Nicolas Hospital, then in 1635 the grounds of the north (today occupied by the préfecture hall and its gardens) were given to the Dominicans to establish a monastery there.
