The narrow gauge railways of the East Fresian Islands of Borkum, Wangerooge and Langeoog connect the harbours of each island with the main town. The Wadden Sea is very shallow and historically, this has dictated the location of the harbour, often some distance from the town. The narrow gauge railway was laid, often across marshland to bring people, freight and mail from the ferry into town. On Wangerooge the service is operated by Deutsche Bahn.
Langeoog and Wangerooge are car-free so transport is limited to train, bicycle or electric golf buggy
