A pair of BN SD40-2s and a Santa Fe 'Blue Bonnet' highlight a 4-unit consist on L-TWI6611 on an evening run on the former Milwaukee. With 40 rock loads from Big Stone City on the head-end, the quartet of EMDs are in notch 8 throughout much of their journey over the rolling hils of the Appleton Subdivision. They will reach Aberdeen by sundown, and the run promises pure bliss at every shot
After an 8-hour shift at work and a full day of classes, Paul Springowski and I departed from Bowling Green, OH and made the 900-mile, 15-hour drive in a single stint, chased the train 100 miles through wavy topography of eastern S. Dakota until sunset, and then turned around and made the 15-hour sprint back home...just in time for our next set of classes. 50 consecutive hours with no sleep and nearly 2000 miles covered in 36 hours was the best experience I'd like to never repeat again. Spontaneity like this is a distinct impossibility in the professional, post-graduation lifestyle, which all the more emphasizes how important these crazy runs were when we had the option.
