y deseo que habia tomado esta foto en el dia de los muertos tambien, esta una cara buena para las celebraciones, pero a mi me encanta algundia :)

Aaaaaand I think I can speak spanish, pretty funny eh? I hope to one day have enough courage to speak it conversationally with some of my spanish speaking friends, but I usually wuss out.

The Day of The Dead celebration occurs on November 2 in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day. It is celebrated by many in Mexico and by some Mexican Americans living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. People go to cemeteries to be with the souls of the departed and build private altars containing the favorite foods and beverages as well as photos and memorabilia of the departed. The intent is to encourage visits by the souls, so that the souls will hear the prayers and the comments of the living directed to them.

I wanted to do this for FGR - Day of the Dead, but of course I missed that...I think I'll add it there anyway :)

And this is my second attempt at lighting inside. (this time I used two lamps!) TOTW - Ghetto Lighting

P.S. I still don't know which one I like better...

My boob is trying to exit stage left.

I zoomed in closer in order to see where this was going. Apparently, the mother wasn't ready to show her makeup job to her daughter.

I managed to get the right moment when it was the father's turn to get painted up. The daughter wanted to see what was happening to him, as she still couldn't see herself at this point. (I'm sure they both did later.)

So the little girl had to lean in to find out for herself how her mother looked.

It's isn't likely that children this age would understand the significance of Dia de los Muertos, unless it has been a long standing tradition in their family's household. When I was the age of this child I didn't know about Day of the Dead, though I did know Halloween, but only seeing it as about pumpkins, costumes, ghosts, goblins and getting candy from door to door. In the long run, Dia de los Muertos is a more interesting holiday, and the tradition of painting one's face is part of that. Also, the tradition of honoring one's ancestors gives the holiday a more personal feel, not just doing a kind of cosplay for the purpose of consumerism.

Situations like this work much better when children are around, because they have such a beautiful innocence about them, especially when they are this young. They provide a natural contrast to the same activity done to an adult, be it a parent or otherwise.

The actual main idea for this photo shoot was to do a Sugar Skull for a woman with a cigar. So that's why this edtit feels a little special to me. From that conceptual point we also tried out some other things.

Dia De Los Muertos couple, Pat and I

I only got this photo of the girl, so I have no idea how the rest of her makeup came out. A lot of the time, because I used the 75-300mm lens, people would step into view, blocking what I wanted to get partly, or entirely. So I would move on to someone else and then forget to go back to check. Sometimes the makeup work was done so fast that I wasn't aware they were done when I did get back.

This adult also had both sides of her face covered in makeup, even though it was just the top part. The design is interesting, but without the traditional spookiness or creepiness to it.

As I said, some parents were getting in on the act with their children. This mother and daughter combination looked interesting; they even wore matching colors.

This makes the little girl look more like she is a circus clown. But after more paint was added she resembled the other children with their Day of the Dead makeup. Those photos will come later.

Here we see the end results -- or close to it. She gave the guy the same color for his eye shading as she had for hers, the only difference being the design.

After these two were made up the mother did some selfies with her daughter. Too many people were walking into my shot when the mother was actually taking the selfies, so this was the best I could get. At least the daughter had her makeup on the left side of her face.

The woman was leaning down to have the finishing touches put on her makeup job, and I liked the way her eyeglasses stood out on the top of her head. It's as if it is another face or mask.

As you see, the woman applying makeup had colored part of her hair in what turned out to be the same color as the shirt on the girl she was applying makeup to. The pink and cyan compliment each other, and that helps a lot. But the best thing is the girl's expression as the last of her makeup is painted on.

Practicing my sugar skull makeup

What made this work for me here is the red shirt the girl is wearing. It compliments her black hair, the black ring painted around her eye, and the white makeup.

900 google viewers looked at this yesterday!!

No doubt this paint can easily wash off from one's face and beard. Nevertheless, his expression suggests him thinking, "Why did I talk myself into doing this?"

Here is another photo of the young woman applying makeup to this guy, who was very patient (he hardly moved). You can see in her expression how she puts herself into her work.

I don't know if the artist has to wait for the facial paint to dry so the other colors can be added, but there was a moment where the artist was finished with the white paint and then the subject would wait for the rest of the work to be done.

Practice, practice, practice!
