Afternoon reconnaissance during high tide at Hot Water Beach. At low tide you can dig a hole in the sand and it will fill with steaming hot water. Don't travel with a shovel? No problem, it can be rented from one of the local shops. In hindsight, we should have rented two shovels, because a sitting-sized hole is bigger than it seems, and finding the right spot may require digging two or three holes. Finally, while my husband was starting the third partial hole, and getting considerably less enthusiastic about the whole idea of sitting in a hot puddle, someone else abandoned a prime spot so we just sat there.
