I'm afraid the view from the road over-bridge, which is extremely busy, wasn't too good, looking towards the large N.E.R. signalbox and the rail formation which leads into the station site. In the left picture, another semaphore is at right but can't be used these days as it controls moves along the now rusty rails into the sidings at the other side of the bridge, seen in the last picture. The state of the cross-overs is in much the same way, as is the line on the far left, though that does look to have seen some activity in recent times. Bridlington South Box is a splendid structure and hopefully it has a few more years life left yet and indeed the book, 'Resignalling Britain', by Michael Rhodes, indicates that the 3 boxes in this area of East Yorkshire, Beverley, Driffield and Bridlington, are safe until 2025, though that is now only 6 years away! Today, an unusual sight on this line, as Freightliner 66588 leads a rake of YKS rail carriers towards the station on the 6Y31 working, to commence from Bridlington, though of course it has already travelled along the line from the Beverley direction and through the Arram, Hutton Cranswick, Driffield, Nafferton, Burton Agnes and Carnaby stations/sites; with no telling during the move, where the set was located; though I suspect it has been here waiting to move, for over an hour. As the set slowly moved along to the station, without stopping, as the time-table indicated it went through 3 minutes early at 14:27. The locomotive at the rear has just come under the road-bridge and in these difficult to take shots, which entailed poking the camera over the high bridge wall, the LCD viewer enabled at the back, permitted properly framed shots to be taken, out of the 10, these two and the next one were the best. 66505 is bringing up the rear of the 6Y31, heading back to base, Doncaster Up Decoy yard from the Bridlington area, via Seamer Junction, Malton, York and then south to Doncaster, arriving at 19:09.
William de Valence effigy
William de Valence, Lord of Pembroke and Wexford was a half brother of Henry III, being the son of Hugh de Lusignan, Comte de la Marche and Isabella of Angouleme, widow of King John. Valence near Lusignan in France was probably his birthplace. In 1247 William and two of his brothers, Guy and Aymer, and his sister Alice came to England at the invitation of Henry III. In addition to his French lands William acquired vast estates in England and Ireland by his marriage, on 13th August 1247, with Joan, daughter of Warin de Munchensy, Lord of Swanscombe. Warin’s first wife was a co-heir of the Marshals, Earls of Pembroke but William was never created Earl of Pembroke. He went on Crusade with Prince Edward and brought back a jewelled cross which his daughter in law Mary later bequeathed to Westminster Abbey (it no longer remains). He died at his manor in Kent on 16th May 1296.
It is thought his tomb was originally in St Edward the Confessor's chapel near the grave of two of his children but was moved when Anne of Bohemia's tomb was put in (1394). His monument was moved to St Edmund's chapel nearby. His tomb has the only existing example in England of Limoges champlevé enamel-work on a monument. The effigy and the tomb chest are of oak on a stone base on which are carved the arms of England, Valence and Valence with Clermont-Néelle.
The effigy is still covered with decorated copper plates but decoration on the tomb chest has mostly disappeared except for five small shields (now grouped together and preserved under glass), and some enamelling between the legs of the effigy. His head rests on a cushion decorated in enamel with rosettes and his coat of arms. He is dressed in a coat of mail with an enamelled sword belt but only three of the small shields on his surcoat now remain. The large shield he carries is very fine (the arms are "barry of ten, argent and azure with an orle of martlets gules" ie. alternate silver and blue horizontal bars with red birds around the edge).

Westminster Abbey (The Collegiate Church of St Peter)
In the 1040s King Edward (later St Edward the Confessor) established his royal palace by the banks of the river Thames on land known as Thorney Island. Close by was a small Benedictine monastery founded under the patronage of King Edgar and St Dunstan around 960A.D. This monastery Edward chose to re-endow and greatly enlarge, building a large stone church in honour of St Peter the Apostle. This church became known as the "west minster" to distinguish it from St Paul's Cathedral (the east minster) in the City of London. Unfortunately, when the new church was consecrated on 28th December 1065 the King was too ill to attend and died a few days later. His mortal remains were entombed in front of the High Altar.
The only traces of Edward's monastery to be seen today are in the round arches and massive supporting columns of the undercroft and the Pyx Chamber in the cloisters. The undercroft was originally part of the domestic quarters of the monks. Among the most significant ceremonies that occurred in the Abbey at this period was the coronation of William the Conqueror on Christmas day 1066, and the "translation" or moving of King Edward's body to a new tomb a few years after his canonisation in 1161.
Edward's Abbey survived for two centuries until the middle of the 13th century when King Henry III decided to rebuild it in the new Gothic style of architecture. It was a great age for cathedrals: in France it saw the construction of Amiens, Evreux and Chartres and in England Canterbury, Winchester and Salisbury, to mention a few. Under the decree of the King of England, Westminster Abbey was designed to be not only a great monastery and place of worship, but also a place for the coronation and burial of monarchs. This church was consecrated on 13th October 1269. Unfortunately the king died before the nave could be completed so the older structure stood attached to the Gothic building for many years.
Every monarch since William the Conqueror has been crowned in the Abbey, with the exception of Edward V and Edward VIII (who abdicated) who were never crowned. The ancient Coronation Chair can still be seen in the church.
It was natural that Henry III should wish to translate the body of the saintly Edward the Confessor into a more magnificent tomb behind the High Altar in his new church. This shrine survives and around it are buried a cluster of medieval kings and their consorts including Henry III, Edward I and Eleanor of Castile, Edward III and Philippa of Hainault, Richard II and Anne of Bohemia and Henry V.
There are around 3,300 burials in the church and cloisters and many more memorials. The Abbey also contains over 600 monuments, and wall tablets – the most important collection of monumental sculpture anywhere in the country. Notable among the burials is the Unknown Warrior, whose grave, close to the west door, has become a place of pilgrimage. Heads of State who are visiting the country invariably come to lay a wreath at this grave.
A remarkable new addition to the Abbey was the glorious Lady chapel built by King Henry VII, first of the Tudor monarchs, which now bears his name. This has a spectacular fan-vaulted roof and the craftsmanship of Italian sculptor Pietro Torrigiano can be seen in Henry's fine tomb. The chapel was consecrated on 19th February 1516. Since 1725 it has been associated with the Most Honourable Order of the Bath and the banners of the current Knights Grand Cross surround the walls. The Battle of Britain memorial window by Hugh Easton can be seen at the east end in the Royal Air Force chapel. A new stained glass window above this, by Alan Younger, and two flanking windows with a design in blue by Hughie O'Donoghue, give colour to this chapel.
Two centuries later a further addition was made to the Abbey when the western towers (left unfinished from medieval times) were completed in 1745, to a design by Nicholas Hawksmoor.
Little remains of the original medieval stained glass, once one of the Abbey's chief glories. Some 13th century panels can be seen in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries. The great west window and the rose window in the north transept date from the early 18th century but the remainder of the glass is from the 19th century onwards. The newest stained glass is in The Queen Elizabeth II window, designed by David Hockney.
History did not cease with the dissolution of the medieval monastery on 16th January 1540. The same year Henry VIII erected Westminster into a cathedral church with a bishop (Thomas Thirlby), a dean and twelve prebendaries (now known as Canons). The bishopric was surrendered on 29th March 1550 and the diocese was re-united with London, Westminster being made by Act of Parliament a cathedral church in the diocese of London. Mary I restored the Benedictine monastery in 1556 under Abbot John Feckenham.
But on the accession of Elizabeth I the religious houses revived by Mary were given by Parliament to the Crown and the Abbot and monks were removed in July 1559. Queen Elizabeth I, buried in the north aisle of Henry VII's chapel, refounded the Abbey by a charter dated 21 May 1560 as a Collegiate Church exempt from the jurisdiction of archbishops and bishops and with the Sovereign as its Visitor. Its Royal Peculiar status from 1534 was re-affirmed by the Queen and In place of the monastic community a collegiate body of a dean and prebendaries, minor canons and a lay staff was established and charged with the task of continuing the tradition of daily worship (for which a musical foundation of choristers, singing men and organist was provided) and with the education of forty Scholars who formed the nucleus of what is now Westminster School (one of the country's leading independent schools). In addition the Dean and Chapter were responsible for much of the civil government of Westminster, a role which was only fully relinquished in the early 20th century.

At David Hockney's "82 Portraits and 1 Still Life" exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, through July 29th, 2018. His quote is about painting portraits. The portrait is of Rufus Hale, painted in November 2015.
David Hockney's image is from a mural in the exhibit and the painting is from a different wall than shown here. This wall originally had only the quote and a chair used by a museum guard, as shown in the next photograph.
I remember when I first saw this in London at the Royal Academy. A whole gallery wall was taken up with this video display and I sat through the whole thing twice as I found it mesmerising. 9 Canon DSLRs were set up in a non-aligned grid and a slow passage down the lane gave this kaleidoscopic view of the changing scene which changes with the distance and the seasons.

Another visit to the area just south of the east-coast seaside resort of Bridlington, in order to deal with other matters and during the time there, from Tues, 19th to Monday 25th, Network Rail were in the area, again apparently, attending to the old N.E.R.'s single track, further south, between Driffield and Beverley. Unfortunately, in a way I mean, there is no report of track movements on the section of line once outside Hull in the south and York in the north, though local trains reverse at Scarborough. This means it is difficult to know exactly where an Engineering train is lurking along the line until such time as it is due in a station, here it has to be Bridlington or Scarborough as the intermediate stations tend not to register the passage until its too late; this was chiefly the cause of missing two of the 5 daytime moves outwards, the inbound workings, 6Y29 & 6Y30, coming in very early Saturday morning at 00:50 and 01:24. As the weather was mainly good the whole week, photographing the moves facing south was fraught with bright, overhead sunlight as this 1st pair of 3 sets, shows. In the background of the view on the left, looking due south-west, the line curves around right and heads in a more westerly direction before turning gently south-west once more heading to Driffield where the line comes about to the south to head to Hutton Cranswick and on to Beverley. The engineering working looks to have been here a while and has come up form the possession between Driffield and Beverley with a pair of class 66 Freightliners, 66588 and at the back, 66505, top-and-tailing the engineering working, now heading towards York and then on to Doncaster. This is the 1st of the two moves out on Saturday, 6Y31, with the time-table showing departure from Bridlington Station, just behind the camera, in around 10 minutes at 14:30. On the track to the right of the front of the loco is an NR 'STOP' board mounted on the rail-head, the Freightliners of course being on the 'wrong line' here, will pass through the station and onto the single track section north to Bempton, Hunmanby and Filey and so on to Seamer Junction for reversal, then to head to York. A tall semaphore signal is at the track side for correct moves away from the camera on the left line and a MAS signal is in the right corner for moves into the station, all controlled from the large N.E.R. box, Bridlington South Box, to be seen in a later picture. At far left, now much overgrown, are the extensive sidings, still with their 3, short-arm semaphore, mounted on a single post, now long disused. At right, about 8 minutes later, the driver had been given authority to proceed and in a cloud of 'clag', the 66588 got underway with is rake of 16 or so YKA, Rail Carriers. More of the sidings and the cross over, between up and down lines, can be seen in this picture, and this is one of the diminishing numbers of semaphore signalled installations which still exist around the country, particularly the hard-hit Beeching area of Lincolnshire, Norfolk and East Yorkshire.

The Daubeney family came originally from Aubigné in Brittany, France. Giles was born in 1452, the eldest son of Sir William Daubeney (1424-1461) of South Petherton in Somerset and Alice, daughter of John Stourton. He had a brother James and sister Eleanor. By 1476 he had married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir John Arundel. He became a successful courtier, soldier and diplomat and was knighted by Edward IV in 1478. He fought at Bosworth Field with Henry Tudor, and was created Baron Daubeney, Lord Lieutenant of Calais and Lord Chamberlain to the king. Giles died in 1508.
Giles was buried in St Paul’s chapel in Westminster Abbey where his alabaster effigy lies next to that of his wife. He wears plate armour and his head rests on a large helmet with a holly-tree crest, and his feet on a lion. Carved on the soles of his shoes are two bedesmen. Elizabeth has long hair with a decorated coif and wears a loose cloak over her gown. At her feet are a lion and a wolf. The original inscription around the tomb chest, which had been recorded in a guidebook of 1600, reads:
Here lieth buried within this tombe Sir Gyles Daubeney knight lord lieutenant of Calis [Calais] lord chamberlaine unto the noble King Henrie the Seventh the which Gyles died the XII day of May in the yere of our Lord 1507 and dame Elizabeth his wife the which died in the yeere of our Lord God 1500 on whose soules Jesus have mercy Amen.

The tomb of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York
This was designed in the Renaissance style by Italian sculptor Pietro Torrigiano (Henry VIII had not liked the designs which were first put forward for the tomb by other sculptors). The black marble tomb base is adorned with six medallions in copper gilt representing the Virgin Mary and Henry's patron saints (Michael, George, Anthony, Christopher, Anne, Edward the Confessor, Vincent, Barbara, Mary Magdalene, John the Baptist and John the Evangelist). At either end are coats of arms supported by cherubs. The gilt bronze recumbent effigies can be seen through the fine grille which surrounds the monument. Seated angels balance on the carved frieze at each corner of the tomb, supporting coats of arms They once held pennants in their hands.
The grille is by Thomas Ducheman (who most likely also designed the bronze gates to the Chapel). Only six of the thirty two statues in the niches of the grille now remain (Saints George, Edward the Confessor, Bartholomew, James the Great, John the Evangelist and another). The badges of the Welsh dragon and the greyhound of Richmond are also part of its decoration. The grille was originally gilded and on special anniversaries many candles, each nine feet high, were lit on top. Four candles were to burn constantly, tended by the monks.
Around the grille (both inside and outside) is a Latin inscription which can be translated
Henry VII rests within this tomb, he who was the splendour of kings and light of the world, a wise and watchful monarch, a courteous lover of virtue, outstanding in beauty, vigorous and mighty; who brought peace to his kingdom, who waged very many wars, who always returned victorious from the enemy, who wedded both his daughters to kings, who was united to kings, indeed to all, by treaty, who built this holy temple, and erected this tomb for himself, his wife, and his children. He completed more than fifty three years, and bore the royal sceptre for twenty four. The fifteenth hundredth year of the Lord had passed, and the ninth after that was running its course, when dawned the black day, the twenty first dawn of April was shining, when this so great monarch ended his last day. No earlier ages gave thee so great a king, O England; hardly will ages to come give thee his like.

Henry VII lavished huge sums on his new Lady Chapel, which was begun in 1503 but not completed until 1516, nearly six years after his death. Henry’s imposing tomb at the east end of the chapel has magnificent gilt bronze effigies of the king and his wife, Elizabeth of York, made by the brilliant Florentine Renaissance sculptor, Pietro Torrigiano.
Since 1725, it has been used for installations of Knights of the Order of the Bath, and their colourful heraldic banners hang here. The Sovereign and the Great Master of the Order continue to install new knights in the chapel, usually every four years.
A Lady Chapel is a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and is common to most cathedrals and large churches.

In 2023 Salts Mill at Saltaire in West Yorkshire displayed David Hockney's biggest picture - a 90.75 metres wide frieze recording the changing seasons in and around his French garden in Normandy.
The work joins together some of the 220 iPad pieces Hockney created during 2020. He comments on the work: "the viewer... will walk past it like the Bayeux tapestry, and I hope they will experience in one picture the year in Normandy".

In Poets Corner, Westminster Abbey
The first poet to be buried here, in 1400, was Geoffrey Chaucer, author of 'The Canterbury Tales'. Not because he was a poet but because he was Clerk of the King's Works. Nearly 200 years later, Edmund Spenser (1553-1598) who wrote 'The Faerie Queene' for Elizabeth I, one of the longest poems in the English language, asked to be buried near Chaucer – perhaps with an eye on his own literary reputation.
And, so began a tradition of burials and memorials which continues to this day. The Deans of Westminster decide who receives a place based on merit though they consult widely. Poets' Corner proper is in the eastern aisle, the 'corner', of the south transept, though over time graves and memorials have spread across the whole transept. There are also several clergymen and actors buried in this transept and musician George Frederic Handel.

Westminster Abbey (The Collegiate Church of St Peter)
In the 1040s King Edward (later St Edward the Confessor) established his royal palace by the banks of the river Thames on land known as Thorney Island. Close by was a small Benedictine monastery founded under the patronage of King Edgar and St Dunstan around 960A.D. This monastery Edward chose to re-endow and greatly enlarge, building a large stone church in honour of St Peter the Apostle. This church became known as the "west minster" to distinguish it from St Paul's Cathedral (the east minster) in the City of London. Unfortunately, when the new church was consecrated on 28th December 1065 the King was too ill to attend and died a few days later. His mortal remains were entombed in front of the High Altar.
The only traces of Edward's monastery to be seen today are in the round arches and massive supporting columns of the undercroft and the Pyx Chamber in the cloisters. The undercroft was originally part of the domestic quarters of the monks. Among the most significant ceremonies that occurred in the Abbey at this period was the coronation of William the Conqueror on Christmas day 1066, and the "translation" or moving of King Edward's body to a new tomb a few years after his canonisation in 1161.
Edward's Abbey survived for two centuries until the middle of the 13th century when King Henry III decided to rebuild it in the new Gothic style of architecture. It was a great age for cathedrals: in France it saw the construction of Amiens, Evreux and Chartres and in England Canterbury, Winchester and Salisbury, to mention a few. Under the decree of the King of England, Westminster Abbey was designed to be not only a great monastery and place of worship, but also a place for the coronation and burial of monarchs. This church was consecrated on 13th October 1269. Unfortunately the king died before the nave could be completed so the older structure stood attached to the Gothic building for many years.
Every monarch since William the Conqueror has been crowned in the Abbey, with the exception of Edward V and Edward VIII (who abdicated) who were never crowned. The ancient Coronation Chair can still be seen in the church.
It was natural that Henry III should wish to translate the body of the saintly Edward the Confessor into a more magnificent tomb behind the High Altar in his new church. This shrine survives and around it are buried a cluster of medieval kings and their consorts including Henry III, Edward I and Eleanor of Castile, Edward III and Philippa of Hainault, Richard II and Anne of Bohemia and Henry V.
There are around 3,300 burials in the church and cloisters and many more memorials. The Abbey also contains over 600 monuments, and wall tablets – the most important collection of monumental sculpture anywhere in the country. Notable among the burials is the Unknown Warrior, whose grave, close to the west door, has become a place of pilgrimage. Heads of State who are visiting the country invariably come to lay a wreath at this grave.
A remarkable new addition to the Abbey was the glorious Lady chapel built by King Henry VII, first of the Tudor monarchs, which now bears his name. This has a spectacular fan-vaulted roof and the craftsmanship of Italian sculptor Pietro Torrigiano can be seen in Henry's fine tomb. The chapel was consecrated on 19th February 1516. Since 1725 it has been associated with the Most Honourable Order of the Bath and the banners of the current Knights Grand Cross surround the walls. The Battle of Britain memorial window by Hugh Easton can be seen at the east end in the Royal Air Force chapel. A new stained glass window above this, by Alan Younger, and two flanking windows with a design in blue by Hughie O'Donoghue, give colour to this chapel.
Two centuries later a further addition was made to the Abbey when the western towers (left unfinished from medieval times) were completed in 1745, to a design by Nicholas Hawksmoor.
Little remains of the original medieval stained glass, once one of the Abbey's chief glories. Some 13th century panels can be seen in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries. The great west window and the rose window in the north transept date from the early 18th century but the remainder of the glass is from the 19th century onwards. The newest stained glass is in The Queen Elizabeth II window, designed by David Hockney.
History did not cease with the dissolution of the medieval monastery on 16th January 1540. The same year Henry VIII erected Westminster into a cathedral church with a bishop (Thomas Thirlby), a dean and twelve prebendaries (now known as Canons). The bishopric was surrendered on 29th March 1550 and the diocese was re-united with London, Westminster being made by Act of Parliament a cathedral church in the diocese of London. Mary I restored the Benedictine monastery in 1556 under Abbot John Feckenham.
But on the accession of Elizabeth I the religious houses revived by Mary were given by Parliament to the Crown and the Abbot and monks were removed in July 1559. Queen Elizabeth I, buried in the north aisle of Henry VII's chapel, refounded the Abbey by a charter dated 21 May 1560 as a Collegiate Church exempt from the jurisdiction of archbishops and bishops and with the Sovereign as its Visitor. Its Royal Peculiar status from 1534 was re-affirmed by the Queen and In place of the monastic community a collegiate body of a dean and prebendaries, minor canons and a lay staff was established and charged with the task of continuing the tradition of daily worship (for which a musical foundation of choristers, singing men and organist was provided) and with the education of forty Scholars who formed the nucleus of what is now Westminster School (one of the country's leading independent schools). In addition the Dean and Chapter were responsible for much of the civil government of Westminster, a role which was only fully relinquished in the early 20th century.

Aymer de Valence
Born about 1270 and was a cousin to Edward I. He was concerned in the wars with Scotland, where in 1306 he defeated King Robert I and captured his brother Nigel Bruce. By inheritance and marriage he was lord of many estates in France, England, Wales and Ireland. On the death of his mother (1307) he was given the title of Earl of Pembroke. His first wife was Beatrice, daughter of Raoul de Clermont, who died in 1320. He married secondly, on 5th July 1321, Mary de St Pol, daughter of Guy de Chatillon, Count of St Pol. He only had one son Henry (d.1322) who was illegitimate. Aymer died suddenly in France (possibly of a broken blood-vessel) on 23rd June 1324 while on an embassy to Charles IV.
His body was returned to the Abbey and buried on the north side of the High Altar where his widow erected a magnificent tomb for him. The sculptor was possibly Richard of Reading. Aymer's tomb effigy wears mail and his surcoat is painted with the variant of the Lusignan arms which his father assumed and his feet rest on a lion. The shield he carried has disappeared, as has the tomb tester, and there is no remaining inscription.
The sixteen small figures around the tomb base represent members of his family and the shields below identify them - on the south side Marie de Bretagne, Henry Earl of Lancaster, Isabelle de St Pol, William Sire of Coucy, Mahaut de St Pol, Charles de France, Marie de St Pol and Guy or Jean de Chatillon and on the north Atholl, John or Laurence Hastings, Blanche de Bretagne, Robert d'Artois, Beatrice de St Pol, Jean de Flandre, Marie de St Pol and Jean or Arthur, duke of Brittany.
On the richly carved tomb canopy Aymer is represented fully armed and galloping on his horse. The tomb was in danger of being removed to make way for General Wolfe’s monument in the 18th century as the Dean of Westminster mistakenly thought Aymer was one of the Knights Templars whom he considered to be "a very wicked set of people". When he found out that Aymer was not one of these he allowed the tomb to remain. The tomb was restored in the early 19th century.

August 2016. With a population of just over 350,000, Bilbao is the capital city of the Biscay province within the autonomous community of the Basque Country (El Pais Vasco). It is the 10th largest city in Spain and considered to be the economic powerhouse of Northern Spain. That description rather belies the fact that it is a beautiful city in its own right with large, open squares, parks and impressive buildings and monuments. But for many, the main attraction of the city is the quite amazing Guggenheim Museum designed by the Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry. Many would argue that the regeneration of this fine industrial city owes much to this building, which was completed in 1997. Whilst the museum houses many excellent works by prominent modern and contemporary artists/sculptors - including David Hockney - it’s the curvy, titanium-clad building that draws the most attention. According to the weather, the time of day and the season, the effect of the light on its exterior can change quite significantly leaving the observer to marvel at its design.
