DOD ADVERTISING: Better Coordination, Performance Measurement, and Oversight Needed to Help Meet Recruitment Goals

I'm working on a way to measure the similarity of movies. Very similar movies are "near" and dissimilar movies are "far". I measured the distance of all of the movies in the Netflix Prize data from "Fight Club" and again from "Steuart Little". I then plot the movies using the nearness (Fight Club = X, Steuart Little = Y). The color comes from the movie's average rating (red = high rating, gray = low rating).

For a different pair of movies see Stuart Little vs Stuart Little 2.

(Project 365 Day 283)

Today's Project 365 photo is just an excuse to direct you to a couple of blog post rants I just wrote. :P

The phone refers to a rant about how worthless and possibly counterproductive "hands-free" cell phone driving laws are. (California has such a law that passed last year and is due to take effect on July 1, 2008.)

The license plate (that I blacked out in Photoshop) refers to an amusing summary of privacy issues with regard to data-mining, in this case the Ohio State Highway Patrol's use of cameras mounted on cop cars that automatically record via GPS where they've seen all the license plates they come across.

Actually some of the northernmost clusters seem to cross over each other in ways that they shouldn't, but I don't know what's going wrong there.

I'm datamining the Next Hope AMD database, all seven gigs of it, for calibration data concerning the MSP430. The chips as shown are from two tape reals, one of the being MSP430F2618 and the other MSp430F2418.

While a majority of values fall in a central peak, there are minor peaks and a hell of a lot wider sampling than I'd expected.

Today I was studing at home and having a coffee when I decided to take a shot about something very usual. What about texting? Everyone does it, but what about a shot? So here it goes...:)

I wanted to take it with ambient light, but at the end I put a strobe under my feet to have my couch lit.

And again..It seems if it was photoshopped, but it's just one simple pic!

IDIA has been commissioned to design and build a virtual presence and artworks for the upcoming Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The physical Museum in East Lansing Michigan, designed by architect Zaha Hadid, is slated to finish construction in Fall 2012. Museum Director, Michael Rush commissioned Fillwalk and the IDIA to envision and create a dynamic program of artworks for the Virtual Broad Art Museum project (VBAM). Fillwalk’s works in collaboration with IDIA designers will be exhibited in the inaugural premiere of the projecton March 15th, 2012. Fillwalk and IDIA were invited by guest curator Adam Brown, MSU to work with the Broad Museum to design the virtual facility and artworks. IDIA is developing the project in the game engine of Unity 3D, which allows for the virtual artworks to be experienced entirely within a web browser.

“Engaging visitors with innovators at the leading edge of art and technology, both here at MSU and around the globe, is key to the Broad Art Museum’s mission,” said founding director Michael Rush. “With the Virtual Broad Art Museum, we have an opportunity to embrace the tremendous creative and connective possibilities that exist in the digital world.”

The mixed world reception will take place on Thursday, March 15th 2012 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm EST simultaneously on the campus of Michigan State University and in the VBAM virtual worlds.

Peter John Harris was born on April 11, 1989 to Joel and Frances Harris in the middle of nowhere in the northern part of Utah. He was a badly behaved child -- he was always drawing on the walls and stealing his father's camera in order to take pictures of things in the back yard. He also ran wherever he went: to the bathroom, to school, to piano lessons, to lunch, to the store, to bed, everywhere. He even ran around when he visited his grandparents every summer in Milwaukee. His elementary school teachers, though, were so amazed at his fast running abilities that his physical education teacher, Mr. Young, convinced the cross country coach at the prestigious Judge Memorial Highschool in Salt Lake City, Utah, to give the young boy a running scholarship. After four years of running in Utah, Peter decided that he wanted to go to college in a far away state. St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota was on the list of schools recommended by his teachers at JM High, so he applied there even though his parents balked at the thought of him going so far away from home.

To Peter's joy and wonderment, he got in with flying colors! He couldn't wait to leave home! All this time that he'd been running in school, he was secretly learning about and producing art and had decided that art was something he really wanted to do with his life. So after he said goodbye to his cat (named Horse), he and his parents drove in their light green Honda Civic the 2045.8 miles to Northfield. On the way, he broke the news to his parents that he really wanted to major in art in college, and wanted to quit running. His parents believed him when he explained that he'd thought through and was sure about his decision. They were very supportive, especially when he showed them the contents of his very impressive art and design portfolio that he'd been secretly working on throughout his schooling. Drawing on the wall was not just scribbling, it was the first steps of a great artist who had been in denial for years, and all the running was mostly for getting the wiggles out of his system so he would have more concentration when creating.

Peter now thrives as an art major at St. Olaf, creating art and thinking up brilliant projects everyday. He is set to graduate in 2011 and is looking forward to life in professional art!
