This one-week event introduced scholars (senior and phd) to the CLARIAH tools for advanced audio-visual analysis, which enable research on a growing number of collections and their contextual data. Klinkt de Atlantische Oceaan anders dan de Indische? Zijn oceaanstromingen in een IJszee fundamenteel anders dan in een tropische zee? Componist Stef Veldhuis werkte samen met oceaanonderzoekers Erik van Sebille en Will de Ruijter om die vragen te beantwoorden. Duizenden oceaansondes wereldwijd verzamelen data die wordt gebruikt voor weersvoorspellingen en klimaatmodellen. Die gegevens vormen nu de basis voor muzikale elementen als toonhoogte, dynamiek en ritme. Tijdens het symposium Music by Oceans op 31 oktober speelde een strijkkwartet de resulterende muziekstukken en vertelden onderzoekers over de oceaanstromingen waarop de composities gebaseerd zijn.
