They were putting in more servers.

Datacenter by Benthem Crouwel Architects (2012)

Antel Datacenter, Light street

It's actually a shipping container packed with computers and about 5 petabytes of storage. The Bing Map team processes its maps and redestributes them to other datacenters using this datacenter.

A chiller failed, leading to a high ambient temperature, leading to 5 other chillers failing. This is what happens next.

Just some servers in a data center.

This terminus loop is not that much changed but its environment even more. At the right the new Van der Valk Hotel Zuidas and in the middle a datacenter of KPN.

In 1948 tramline 4 was extended to Europaplein (about 500 meters from this loop). Between 1981 and 1988 this terminus loop was next to the railway platforms on the level of the A10 beltway and tram and train stood side-by-side. The railway was widened to 2 tracks and they needed space for the circle métroline 50 so the tram had to move to this terminus space South of the A10 beltway and railway station. This terminus loop was inaugurated on 15/12/1988.

Here we see two Combino (13G) trams on line 4, 2087 and 2129.

Combino 2087 was delivered to the GVB on 07/07/2003 and first on the streets in passenger service on 15/08/2003 on line 14.

Combino 2129 has been delivered to GVB on 04/02/2004 and was first put into service on 27/02/2004 on line 25 (President Kennedylaan - Centraal Station).

Some of our boxes are in there.

Here we see Linn setting up Brendan's new firewall. Man, a datacenter is a funky place: many long rows of humming cabinets containing hundreds and hundreds of servers. Yes folks, THIS is the Internet.

These are the connections between the switches and patch panels *after* they were cleaned up considerably.. It doesn't look too much different today (3.5 yrs later.. ) but most of the connections are defunct as our production systems have moved to a real data center.

One of the funniest spots on the real estate tour was a place with zero air conditioning, cubes stacked tight, and this joyus reminder of Joi's first closet server room. The guy said there was a certain temptation while working on things (notice the angle of the monitor).

I have an article in the new issue of ICON magazine on the architecture, aesthetics and perception of datacenters.

Mentioned: Apple, Google, Facebook, Telehouse West (including interview with the architect, YRM), Andrew Blum, the SYNDC, William Gibson and more.

Article illustrated by the lovely Jack Featherstone.

Storage devices in a datacenter or colocation facility.

Sealand's "datacenter". At a later point there were about 10 more machines and a couple ethernet switches, nothing more. Currently HavenCo's servers are colocated in London.
