AIR TRAGEDY
CRASH IN FOG
WIGRAM MACHINE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, July 22
Four members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force were killed instantaniously when an Airspeed Oxford aeroplane crushed in heavy fog on the side of a low hill near Big Bay, Ataahua, opposite Lake Ellesmere, about 9 o'clock this morning.
The machine is stated to have been on its way to the Birdling's Flat range for air firing practice. The victims were:—
Pilot Officer William Oscar George Krogh. aged 28, Hastings, staff pilot. Wigram.
Airman Pilot Leading Aircraftman Archibald John Hull, aged 24, Napier.
Airman Pilot Leading Aircraftman Herbert John von Tunzelmann, aged 22. Invercargill.
Aircraftman, First Class (Flight Mechanic) Albert Bartholomew Duffell, aged 25, married. Christchurch.
Pilot Officer Krogh was trained at Wigram Flying Training School, No. 9 course, and on passing out was selected for retention with the Air Force in New Zealand because of his outstanding ability. Since then he had continued to serve at Wigram. Aircraftmen Hull and von Tunzelmann were both on the senior course at the school and would have completed this training at the end of this week. Aircraftman Duffell was serving with an advanced training squadron. The machine was heard flying low by Messrs. Ivor C. Gray and Alan Nutt, who were on Mr. Gray's farm adjoining the Akaroa main highway and facing Lake Ellesmere. Heavy fog hid the machine from sight, but it was believed from the sound to have turned back towards Wigram. Within a few seconds both men heard a loud crash, which was followed by silence, only a short distance away.
CRASHED INTO HILL.
An immediate search was started by the two men, but the fog was so thick that it was half an hour, involving some three miles of tramping, before the wrecked machine was located. It had crashed into the side of a 300 foot high hill on the property of Mr. C. E. Gray, striking a clay projection and ending in a shallow gully. It was apparent immediately that all the occupants had been killed outright.
After a brief examination, while Mr. Gray remained beside the machine, Mr. Nutt hurried to the nearest telephone, about a mile and a half distant on the main road, and summoned Wing Commander G. S. Hodson, of Wigram, who, with Squadron Leader R. A. Calder, immediately left for the scene with an Air Force ambulance.
The bodies of the men were carried part of the distance to the road and brought the remainder of the way, about one mile, by sledge. The route, followed by the machine before the crash was within a mile of the flats on the hillward side of the lake, and it was officially stated today that the aeroplane must have flown low to try to penetrate the fog. The engines and other parts of the machine will be salvaged tomorrow. [2]

I'm making a series of simple Filemaker databases that I can tap into in other databases. This one is the "Course Database" - every major at MIT has a course number. This will probably need to be updated every, oh, I don't know, 30 years.

Echo Continental was a customer and company magazine published in Hanover, Germany, by the tire and rubber goods manufacturer Continental AG. It lasted from January 1913 to April 1941.
On April 1, 1925, the magazine ran a feature about a new "ABC mono-cycle". Put simply, “Motorcycles for men, unicycles for women!”
This feature essentially served as a plug for the company's "Continental-Kraftradreifen" tires — thus making it one of the earliest examples of a spoof April Fool ad 😊.

ART WORK IN HOBART. MR. CHARLES C. WATSON'S CARVING - "Some meritorious carving in stone, to be used in the stonework of the new Custom House in Davey-street, is now in course of execution by a talented young Hobart artist, Mr. Charles C. Watson, of the firm of Messrs. Watson Brothers, Elizabeth-street.
One example of the work, is almost completed, and is sufficiently advanced to en- able one to judge of the character of Mr. Watson's work. It is a figure of "Plenty," with the cornucopia on one side, a wheat sheaf on the other, and a bunch of apples in the right hand. The figure is 8ft. in height, is in three pieces, and weighs 2 tons. It is composed of Campania stone, and will be placed on top of the Custom House, at the Dunn-street end. The work, from an artistic point of view, is creditable in design and execution, and the city many be congratulated upon having been able to obtain such a work within a few minutes' walk of the fine building upon, which it is to be placed. The figure will be placed in the pediment at Dunn-street entrance to the Custom House. Mr. Watson is also engaged upon a figure of a sheep-shearer, symbolic of "Australia," 8ft. high, and weighing 3 tons. The typical shearer has his left hand on a bale of wool, and in his right holds a pair of shears. Mr. Watson has also in hand figures of "Britannia" and "Justice," each 6ft. in height, and in a sitting position, which will flank the main door of the Custom House in Davey-street. Mr. Watson has already supplied four life-size figures, which are now utilised in the Custom House building. Two of these - "strong men" - support, on their backs, the pediment at the main entrance in Davey-street. Besides the works just mentioned, Mr. Watson has furnished for the building the carved Royal Arms over the main doorway, a number of Ionic caps, and other work. It will probably be four months before all the work is completed. All the carvings are in Campania stone, and, besides illustrating the skill of the artist, serve to show that, in the stone used, the State possesses a useful asset.
... A word about the Messrs. Watson themselves. They are both natives of Hobart, but, some five years ago, they went to London, and for three years studied carving at the East London Technical College (the People's Palace), Mile End road; the Regent-street Polytechnic, and the Hornsey Polytechnic. Mr. C. C. Watson obtained a bronze modal for wood-carving at the last-named establishment, and Mr. W. W. Watson secured a scholarship of 10 guineas, tenable for three years, given by the London County Council, for building construction and masonry. The Messrs. Watson hold classes at the Art Society's rooms, in the Barracks, during the winter months." - The Mercury, Wednesday 20 November 1901, p. 2.
