"The closer he gets to the Japrael System, the more uncertain he is. His muscles tense, his brain will not shut off for sleep, his appetite is nearly non-existent. He has combed through information from his databanks, stuffing in facts and pushing away any rising questions, as if he is preparing for some kind of examination. He would be glued to his computer console for hours without a break...Why is he feeling so . . . nervous? So . . . absorbed with his findings?" -- Chapter X: Intelligence 03

This is an old gadget from 1998: Casio SF-4900C - a pocket-sized business traveler digital organizer and data bank, that holds personal and business phone books, a calendar, an event & appointment scheduler, and a calculator. It has a screen similar to a digital watch or LCD calculator, and beeps when pressing buttons or on alarms.
This was from a time of electronic versions of a paper Day-Timer planner and Rolodex, just before PDAs like the Palm Pilot and pocket computers running Windows CE, and way before modern iPhone and Android smartphones with their built in apps for email, contacts and calendars.
In the centre, Kees Waaldijk* (Homostudies, Netherlands); with Andreas Bosshard (HACH, Switzerland) on the right. On the left, Ernst Strohmeyer*(HOSI Linz, Austria).
Kees was working on the Homostudies Iceberg project documenting discrimination in EC countries. He reported that files had been opened for all European countries, and there was now a rapidly expanding collection of newspaper reports and documents. Growing numbers of people were sending material. The project would result in a databank with published and unpublished material on cases of discrimination and anti-homosexual laws. The information would support ILGA’s work on the Council of Europe and the European Community. Homostudies had been granted money by the European Human Rights Foundation to employ a part-time assistant to work on the project.

"You will be our men on the inside," said Struker. "Infiltrate the Rebel base on Yavin and pretend to be trying to stop me from stealing a secret databank and destroy the Rebels from the inside."
Life as a diabetic is a lot easier now I reckon than it was say 25 years ago. All the small devices that we carry around like the phones, pads and other gadgets serve as databanks instead of the pieces of paper or little books that a diabetic would use in the past to write down their BSL results etc ...

The RE-500 was purchased off ebay.com for about $20, new, in original packaging. There was a risk of it being dead on arrival or the LCD screen malfunctioning, but this one was OK. After inserting two CR2025 batteries, it powered up and was ready to use.
